I've been tinkering with game development since I was a teenager (aka ages ago).
It was my primary motivation for getting into IT in the first place and...
I actually started my IT career as a professional video games developer, working for an international games studio.
However, I never got around to making a video game of my own and, as responsibilities and adult life took over, it's been something I just kept putting off to someday 'later'.
But later may never come. So I'm going to start making that video game. Starting today ⭐

    That's great. I have started my own devlog journey. Although my 1st 2nd 3rd or 4th videos was not as good as yours lol. But it did give me inspiration on how I should start my devlog. Thank you and I will definitely continue to follow and learn from you.

    Very cool! Looking forward to seeing and hearing more! 👍 Even at this early stage I'd be curious to hear more about how you picked the game engine? You mentioned Unreal is more for FPS style, but any reason to pick Unity over something like Godot for this project? Or maybe a video that talked about, when you would choose each of the different engines?

  • @SurfacedStudio

    @SurfacedStudio

    Thank you for the comment :) Definitely a fair bit of thought went into it and might be worth a video someday. Unreal isn't very convenient for 2D as it doesn't have many 2D tools. Unity (2022 LTS) has 2D tooling for tile sets, animations, 2d light/shadows, shaders and more. Unity also seems to have a richer feature set and a better proven record of successful games than something like Godot.

    Say what you want to say but what I'd say is nothing happens for simply nothing, things happen for a purpose or purposes. Lately, I have been in a very foggy and unclear thinking regarding my future career and what I am suppose to do in life to both enjoy and make money. I have always been hanged on the thinking of just do what I really and truly love and have passionate about, which is making games since I was very tiny little kid, just like you. Now, I am 31 years old and I still not certain about what I should be doing now and later but I have always been certain about me dreaming of making video games and programming and stuff. So for that past couple of months, and for almost everyday I am just thinking and thinking over and over if I still able to learn how to make and develop games and then turn that as a career for life! I just don't want to spend the rest of my life, if any, just doing what I don't have interest in and just to pay the bills to keep myself a live and that's it. If I do what I love then I believe I can contribute to the society in a productive and creative way and feel that I am being part of it and apart. Seeing you my friend finally deciding to do what you always wished for is as if it was literally me and it just great to see that you have started. The reason of my comment is to let you know that I am sure that I know how you're feeling, at least a small portion of it. on finally start what you been putting off shelve for years, and you feel that all this time since the beginning you've been learning and gathering everything around you on a very slow pace all this time for this very moment to just reading you up without consciously knowing why. Good for you and I wish you truly the best to achieve what you are working towards. I am still learning myself and I know me, you or anyone on a similar path will go through the good and the bad but what matters that we just don't give up. push through so maybe we meet up one day and each cherishing is own game :D.

    Something I found today that I've been missing all the time, or could be I simply forgot about it and that probably what let me down and lost for a whole, is that I reminded myself that while I'm learning the only main focus point for me should be and always be is simply enjoying the ride and the journey and that I should never turn this to a chore or something, which I unconsciously start doing lately, because the moment you do you just going to lose the majority of the fun and the interesting things you going to encounter along the road of learning :D

    Whatever you decide to make I'm sure it will be brilliant, so long as you stick to what inspires you! The game I've put the most hours in to over the years is Terraria so the concepts you're toying with are vibing with me hard. If you need a sounding board whilst your writing your GDD give me a buzz! I've only published one game made in Unity but I have about 10 60% complete projects so I at least know my way around the program and what it's capable of (which is A LOT!). お楽しみに!!

    Hi Simon 😀 I'll definitely ping you in for some ideas / feedback. Not sure how formal a 'GDD' I'll have, but I'm always happy to share! What Unity game did you publish and do you have a list of your working titles? My project will definitely be (super) slow burn as I'm doing it on the side (or a side), but I'm really excited to get into it. Been playing with Unity and Unreal Engine to see what I can do - and how difficult it is. It's nice that the 'Engine' part is taken care of these days, though I understand that filling a game with content end-to-end is also a potentially VERY large task hehe

    @@SurfacedStudio Heh, it was a music themed cookie clicker clone I can't even remember the name of. Last game I worked on professionally, actually, and I'd already switched to working in finance! Only a few of the games I worked on are still in the app store. Feels like a lifetime ago! Even having written a dozen of them I'm not so sure how useful a detailed GDD is when you have a small or solo project, but it can be useful in thinking ideas through and letting your imagination go wild, but in a structured way 😄

    😀 I do love letting my brain run wild... ! It all feels SO long ago, but I'm excited to claw back a little bit of that young energy and finally try to actually make a game hehe It's nice though to have friends scattered all over the place that are still in the industry (or have lots of experience from it) and I might come nagging with some questions at some stage... :D

    That's fair enough :) I've been mainly tinkering with Unity which now has some pretty neat integration with Blender as well and I can tweak the render pipeline since it's now scriptable. But I do remember having the raw power of C++ and low level APIs to fiddle with :D

    ‏ ‏‪6:02‬‏ Hey dude! You've forgot abt coding in creating games that is so hard to work with even with unity to create just rolling hallway ball with nothing more! it's just rolling on floor like bowling!😅

    Coding is the easy part IMO ;) And to be honest for a rolling ball with nothing more you don't even need to know how to code - you can do that with inbuilt tools / Components in Unity 🎳

    Well, if I'm going Unity then it'll all be C#. To get really good performance though you'll likely have to dig into C/C++/assembly at some stage IMO
