Just bought GBC that did not power on. Based on pics, I thought it might be a simple replacement of the battery terminals (non-motherboard side). Turns out I can't get continuity from any of the fuses in the area that you are working on. The ones close to the game slot are fine (C10 and C47). All others not. One actually looked like a it burst as it was charred and disintegrated upon cleaning the board. Not sure if it will be worth replacing all fuses at this point, but this did give me some hope and guidance on what I might need to do if I decide to go down that path. Thanks for this video. It was very helpful.

Hey! Great video! I Have a question: I plugged a worm light into my game boy color, and it shut down. I guess the worm light short circuited the gbc. But it totally stopped working. So do you think it’s the fuse that popped?

Sure, you want to look for a 1A 50V fuse like these: console5.com/store/fuse-1a-50v-surface-mount-smd-sony-psone.html You can also check Mouser, Arrow, LCSC, or even eBay or AliExpress :)

I don’t think they make them. You could find a broken GBC motherboard and take it from there. Or... if you’re really desperate just solder your power switch so it’s always on and “turn it off” by removing the batteries?

  • @esotericsean

If a fuse was blown, the entire system wouldn't turn on, so that's not it. It could be a faulty or corroded/dirty DC jack, or something along the voltage rail it outputs could be damaged. Best way is to plug in an AC/DC adapter and check the voltage with a multimeter. Or you can try giving it a thorough clean with some alcohol. A backlit screen shouldn't affect the jack from powering on the system.

To make the process easier, you could also solder the replacement fuse on top of the blown one, piggyback style. That would make things way easier. No removing the old fuse and you just have to put a bit of extra solder on top of the old fuse, then solder the new one on on top of it. Easier to reach. Beware, those fuses are super tiny!

What does it show when you touch the multimeter leads together while in continuity mode? Whatever that shows, that means it has continuity. If it shows the same thing when you test across a fuse, then it also has continuity. If it shows something different then the fuse has popped.

you dont need flux at all. no one needs it, but everyone seems to spread it on whatever their doing like bread & butter. also get a solder sucker your going to rip traces removing components that way. heating it too long and force destroys traces.
