A witness attempted to rescue Tubby, a three-legged cocker spaniel, by crawling onto the bridge. The brave man managed to open the car door but Tubby started to bite him. People continued to call the dog’s name. It was too frightened to run to safe ground and didn’t survive the fall.

“With real tragedy, disaster and blasted dreams all around me, I believe that right at this minute what appalls me most is that within a few hours I must tell my daughter that her dog is dead, when I might have saved him.” - Leonard Coatsworth, Nov. 7, 1940.

It was fortunate it was the family pet rather than a child.😪 The poor doggie must have been on the back seat rather than next to the driver, and in the heat of the moment, the self-preservation instinct was greater than anything else 😮.

Flow induced vibration is very interesting. If want to learn there is a book by blevins. In fact I had worked on buffet flow over airforce tanker. The pod on the tanker was vibrating violently because of the flow separation. SHOCK WAVEs are created on the pod causing separation . We in Aerospace deal with flutter of aircraft. The physics is similar to this bridge. The wing vibrates in bending and torsion due to the flow. At higher airspeeds the wing may vibrate violently into failure . This is why we test the wings during flight test. Before flight test we run computer simulations called the double lattice method. 600 pages of heavy math to understand it. Anyway just wanted to share. You never learn this in your graduate school. My curiosity in the field helped.

Why are there so many ignorant dog lovers watching and commenting their worthless opinions here? Take five minutes and read the full story. The dig refused to leave the car and bit one of the men trying to rescue it. And frankly they shouldn't have wasted their time or risked their lives like that over a stupid dog!

'Narrows' refers to the actual channel of water itself & not the bridge. It's a 'physical geography' term, similar to ' strait ' or ' sound '. ( It's nothing to do with the bridge itself being narrow, in this instance ).

Maybe the wind shut the car door Maybe the whole darn thing leaning one way then the other at up to an angle of 45 degrees shut the car door. Maybe the guy was so scared he just 'did a runner'. Maybe the dog was so scared it froze. Maybe the dog was so scared it bit the rescuer. So many maybes.....so maybe at least one came true, sadly.

Easy to project what one should do in a once in a lifetime situation. By all accounts conventional thinking was the bridge wasn’t going to fail… until it did. All the rhetoric aside… I’d take my dog with me. 100.

@@gman5-035 In such situation that’s what makes the difference between heroic (I save my dog) or selfish (I save myself and I don’t care about the dog) behaviour. In France, pets such as cats and dogs are considered by laws as sensitive beings. They are not human but they are not objects. In many american films, somebody is to save the world. However, in reality there may not be enough determination to save a dog. What a discrepancy.
