Galliciano in Greko Calabria
Partially taken from the documentary, Magna Graecia: the Greko of Calabria, we mad our way from Bova Marina via Lapse to Galliciano. Thanks heaps to Maria-Olimpia Squillaci who is a younger Greko speaker and Danilo, another younger Greko speaker. I hadnt been here for 16 years and it was great to hear Greko spoken by different generations. Basil Genimahaliotis shot and edited the clip.
The Greko language and people have an unbroken timeline since the ancient Greek colonies. Greko is spoken by several thousand people from elders through to younger people.
The actual documentary where part of this is from, was made possible thanks to M&J Chickens and AHEPA NSW.
The last I was was here, it was Carmelo Nucera and Pat Porpiglia who took us up here, way back in 2002!

I suggest to all visitors to take the chance to attend the Greek-Orthodox Holly Service in Sunday morning(10:30 winter/09:30summer)in Galiciano. This is a unique experience!
I’m from Cyprus and our dialect is very similar and I understand everything they said!

Thank you Billy Wood, You are a rare gem. My great-grandmother was Griko from Bovasario. When she arrived in the US in the 1880s, she and her sister were very distinctive, and a little isolated, among Italian immigrants because of their Griko dialect. You are a beautiful person to make these valuable videos for us. I never met my great or grand mothers. Through ancestral DNA, I have traced my heritage through my great-grandmother back to a small group of early Aramaic Christians from Syria who under religious persecution, fled from Syria and ended up in Calabria. We can not establish yet an exact timeline of travel but it looks like my genetic ancestor fled Syria around 1,400 AD with other Christians. Other records speculate we had been in Bova, Magna Graecia for only about 5 generations (100 yrs) before immigrating to the United States so possibly Salentina and/or the Athenian peninsula before that. Both stories have been told in my family; we were at times from either the "toe" or "heel" of the "boot" but always spoke Griko. Perhaps one day we will understand this mysterious piece of our ancestral mosaic. In the meantime, if in your travels you encounter a Griko inquiring about an American cousin in Colorado, send them my way! Ciao, Billy!

The Village is called :BOVA or I XORA TOU BUA(TRANSLATED MEANS "THE LAND OF BUA").REFERING TO THE BUA FAMILY(GJIN BUA ,MOISE BUA etc) With a simple google search you can find out for yourself the time period they came to live there....
