Try turning off " scene optimizer " and " auto HDR". Things turn different and if you are a good photographer for the better. AI is not always better, same the HDR auto bracket, sometimes, you want the darker photograph.

I think the reason why Expert Raw app takes so much time for a photo can be cause it claims to take 18bit RAW photos which as far as I know the highest amount of bit depth that u can get from any smartphone ; also this RAW is not something we see on Regular DSLR/MIR. Cameras it's also Computational RAW so it takes a little time for that Processing P.S : You can minimise the shutter lag if u take Burst shots or Take a photo using the PRO mode from the built in Camera App using Auto Setting such as shutter and ISO Anyways Great Vedio ❤

Samsung had a designated photography department with point & shoot handhelds up to interchangeable lens camera bodies. From 2010 to 2015 was the run with their game changer of a mirrorless camera, the NX-1. Starting with the S4 mildly in 2013, the S5 in 2014 & on; Samsung saw a market for camera tech in smartphones. So they disbanded their photography dept to have that group help with further improving what the handsets were capable of. 8 years later & look at how far they have come from that decision that seemed like a terrible idea, initially. To helping drive smartphone sales with the business.

The expert raw mode is taking multiple stacked (16 bit!) raw files to compute and process the finished raw file. The standard camera app takes 8 bit or 10 bit (raw), so it is much, much faster processing. Hopefully the larger expert raw files can get a bump in processing via updates in the future.

Just being able to take night photography with it, and don't even need to have an tripod with you is amazing. Gonna play some more with the S22 Ultra for sure. And now at least i got a okay camera with me all the time, if i can't pack out my system camera on the go. The only thing i wish now, is that someone makes a "camera case" for the S22 Ultra, so that it's easier to hold still. Since it's an expensive phone i would rather have a sturdy case around it that made it easier to not drop it.

I agree with your comparison of a modern smartphone vs. a highend compact or midrange system camera! I made this experience in September 2019 when I did night shots from/on a ship in Berlin with my Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and my 1" Panasonic TZ-101. Night shots without a tripod were better with the Note 9. 3 years ago. The S/Note 10 was already out. I ordered the S22 Ultra as a sucessor of my Note 9 yesterday. A €/$/£ 500... 600.- camera can compete at day or with a tripod at night. But not for shots of party scenes at night without a tripod. It's an interesting development. 😎

I think the reason for the long processing times in expert raw is that it's collecting alot of data from the other sensors as well so it can collect the maximum amount of data about the subject as possible. Samsung is big on using multi lenses now . Plus it's stacking multiple shots from the main.

On the expert raw, as it been a beta app for the pasts months. If you noticed it it has more high dynamic range. Even with the setting turned off. As you said it on the normal camera app on night photography expert raw actually takes a few shots more to get most of the detail, shadows and lights out. Therefore causing a shutter lag while its processing the photo. Think this is supposed to get fixed very soon before they launch their full features to the standart camera app.

Hello Tom, To Begin with, i would like to thank you for the good video, and your time to tackle the details. Great work, kudos. I would like to address an issue you came out with about "shutter lag" somewhere around 6 min 52 sec. of the video. in my world, we have a saying, it is not a bug its a feature. I believe it describes the issue perfectly. The short story is simple: This issue is not a real bug or issue, this is caused by the nature of expert raw app and how it works. In short Expert RAW is trying to extract the most quality using mult raw photos, so it is only natural to have some delay in action, until it takes all of the multiple frames and make its binning processing to combine all of the frames, to get the best out for the final frame you are presented with. This delay is natural for a phone. I am not that familiar to get into details, but i believe the short version is the proper explanation which tackles the heart of the issue, and i believe it should give you enough clarity on topic and what is happening in the background and how and why this propagates as "Shutter lag" Thanks for the informative video Kind regards

@@hasanagera Well its just stacking an unhealthy amount of images, i think like 8 to 15, it has nothing to do with batch hdr, or bracketing, or pixel binning, its just the laws of physics. You cant take 15 photos while each photo has a 1 second shutter speed in anything less than 15 seconds. The reason behind the huge amount of images being stacked is to control noise, samsungs 108 mp sensor has terrible iso performance, and it get unusable quickly anything above 400 iso, one can test that by taking a raw file from the normal camera app.

Thanks for the comment dude :) so the sharpness we're talking about here is what's called 'digital sharpness' and it's there to try and replicate sharpness of higher end lenses. To be honest, most professional cameras will be sharp, but also have a smoothness and certain quality that just makes the images look way more pleasing and more like real life. Hope that helps!

That is because there no actual aperture control in the S22 Ultra. It is fixed permanently at f/1.8 not only on S22U, but in almost all other phones. The Galaxy S9 and S10 had a feature called vari-aperture which meant that you could select either one of two apertures (f/1.5 or f/2.4). But later, they realised people don't really appreciate it, so they stopped doing it, and also moved to an f/1.8 fixed aperture lens. Hope it clears your doubt. P.S Great Review @Tom Rich .

The main, and very frustrating problem with the S22 is something that you only briefly touch on at 6:42 in your video: that is the problem with motion in low light situations using the standard camera app. This is very apparent when taking photos at a concert or night club where the images are consistently blurry and noisy and just basically unusable. I've tried every combination of settings, 50mp vs standard 3:4 etc. My wife's Pixel 3A has no such problems. It effortlessly takes sharp photos in night club settings where a performer my be moving somewhat. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this issue ?

Okay so. I wish you could have given us a link so we can download those raw files ourselves and see how they perform. About the shutter lag on the Expert Pro Raw App, most of the explanations here are either slightly wrong or completely wrong. The app is consistently stacking a large amount of images, I think upwards of 8 to 15 different exposures to create a final image, why ? Well simply because as it is currently, for some reason, The Samsung's camera is incredibly prone to luminance noise on anything above a 100 iso. I would encourage you to honestly compare different phones such as phones from Xiaomi, or google with the samsung at different iso levels and you would see that for some bizzare reason, the samsung's 108 megapickels sensor is incredibly noisy. I have tested other samsung phones with different sensors and they are alot better, but specifically the 108 megapixel sensor suffers the most. In general Samsung phones, even if using the same sensor are more noisy in raw files compared to other brands and i am not entirely sure why.

How do you manually focus in between two objects and use depth of field to bring then both into focus- or focus on the hyperfocal distance? How do you almost instantly reset color balance or any of the other adjustments without dedicated controls. How do you compare a rinky dink lens and sensor to a full frame or medium format sensor and real lenses. Why is it that 4k video from my toy P1000 Nikon look so much better than the even 7K from my S22? Let's face, you're trying to make a toy sound like a real camera. My s22 is great for many reasons, but quality photos ? .......sorry. Maybe someday.
