Galaxy S21 Ultra: Space Zoom explained and tips for using it

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Galaxy S21 Ultra is an improvement in pretty much every way over the Galaxy S20 Ultra. One of the most conspicuous places you can see that is with the cameras. Samsung installed two telephoto cameras. One with 3x magnification and the other with 10x. This dual-telephoto setup along with AI make for a better experience when zooming in for photos and videos. We walk you through how it all works, the importance of optical zoom over digital zoom and share a few tips when using zoom.

    ...Actually you can record video at 100X zoom on the S21 Ultra. First open the camera in photo mode and zoom in to 100X, then simply touch and HOLD the video record icon. But keep in mind that once you take your finger off that icon the recording stops.

    So my question is. since the s20 ultra's periscope camera mechanically zoomed to 4x optical (as shown on jerryrig's video), is the s21's 10x camera locked at 10x mechanically? In other words it does not mechanically zoom like the s20 ultra? because theoretically if it can mechanically zoom from something like 3x to 10x optical then wouldnt that eliminate the need for the 3x sensor?

    @@willmorris8198 de s20 has a locked camera aswell. All modern phones have locked camera, because there is no room to move. Maby in the future periscope could move, but no one done it so far. A decade or so ago they made a smartphone with a moveable lens. But it looked like a camera with phone on it. Not a pleasant look.

    @@willmorris8198 part of the problem here is the misuse of the word 'zoom'. These phones only have telephoto lenses, which by definition are fixed optical/mechanical magnification. A zoom lens has variable optical magnification. I'm fairly sure there are no mobile phones on the market now that have actual optical zoom lenses, and I would be surprised if the S20 Ultra had mechanical/optical zoom. Unfortunately this video doesn't explain the S21 Ultra's zoom sequence particularly well. I believe the main 108MPixel lens uses digital zoom to get from 1X to 3X at which point the 3X 'telephoto' lens/sensor takes over, and uses digital zoom on its sensor to get up to 10X. And then the 10X telephoto camera takes over, and I think it uses its sensor to achieve digital zoom all the way up to 100X. I might be wrong, it's possible the S21 Ultra combines data from different sensors simultaneously and does a lot of software processing to obtain the optimum image. I do own an S21 Ultra and I've watched numerous reviews. In my opinion, the most amazing photographic features of the S21 Ultra are 1) the image quality at 10X, as the dedicate telephoto lens/sensor are brilliant, and 2) the image stabilisation, particularly when using space zoom. And now the night mode has got even better, as has the optical image stabilisation.

    tried to use s21 ultra on big mountain skiing but damn it its so hard to know which options to choose to record a video while skiing a long line from a long distance (another top- approx 1km). would be so cool to have the possibility to start with x1 then zoom on the skier with x10 and then the whole skiing process with x3. It seems like the phone has huge troubles to catch sharp picture, struggle to focus on something and its also hard to hit that skier on the screen with a finger to get autofocus. Even if we manage this the whole beautifull mountains in the background get foggy... That hand shake in winter conditions seems to be making it even harder. Do you think gimbal would help for that or do we need to carry big heavy tripod? (small one is not gonna work most of the times as we need hight to catch the whole line)

    I just tried measuring this now with a ruler, and it seems to be about 2.5cm. There isn't a dedicated macro mode or dedicated close-up lens/sensor. Instead the main 108MPixel lens/sensor can focus on things really close up. I've come to the S21 Ultra having used Sony's flagship phone, and I can tell you Samsung are doing it much better. For telephoto, yes you need dedicated optics, but for macro, a good quality versatile lens/sensor is the best way to achieve good results.

    For digital zoom....think about loading a picture in Photoshop....then zooming in. Maybe you can throw some image processing/ML/or AI at it to help (stabilization, super-resolution, etc.). You have already captured the image with your optics w/ the resolution afforded to you via the optical elements (this is tested in the lab using a collimator, edge targets, tri-bar, and/or MTF or PSF calculation. The given lens design tries to minimize optical aberrations using ray-tracing to minimize coma, LCA, etc. Once you collect the image, at focus, w/ the lens design, that's all you can do. But you can digitally zoom in (image processing) after that (i.e. the Photoshop example). In the old days, there would be ONE camera and a fancy, expensive lens design to do everything. But the lens system gets big to accommodate everything (wide angle to zoom) w/ minimal aberrations. So....focal planes/systems have become cheap to fabricate...so why not just break up wide angle, zoom, etc. into "separate" cameras then use computational photography / imaging processing to stitch the imagery from the different cameras together? It's cheaper and actually, better. That's why phones now have x-cameras on them.

    @@brucewahlthesecond it's actually pretty good. It makes this thing as close to a camcorder as you can get. The 10x lens isn't as capable as the other three in low light however. So if you're doing an evening video and you zoom in to 10x while recording (it can seamlessly switch lenses while recording to a maximum of UHD at 30 FPS), you'll notice a sudden drop in exposure. That's just a normal phenomenon of making any lens longer. But in good light, it allows me to make really cool, almost professional looking, shots of action.

    It's silly IMO, but Samsung's camera software switches which lens is used "automatically". If you select the single tree icon, it will _probably_ switch to the telephoto lens, but it might in fact use digital zoom on the wide lens (I am using the plain S21, so only one telephoto lens for me). In my experience, it will switch back and forth kind of randomly when I'm in the 2x - 4x range. As an experiment, you can definitely determine which lens currently in use by covering one lens at a time with your finger, and once the image is totally blocked by your finger, then you've found which lens it is using.

  • @StevenChristenson

    @StevenChristenson

    As Seth points out, it's not "so easy" as people suggest. They naively believe that 3x means 3x optical zoom... but it MIGHT REALLY be 1x with "digital" zoom because the camera doesn't do what you expect AND the actual zoom is also related to the MODE the camera is in: 1:1, 9:16, 3:4, 3:4 104MP, or Full. E.g. in 3:4 104MP, it is ONLY using the left middle camera and you can pinch to go from 1x to 6x but of course only 1x is "optical". And once you pick something, it no longer tells you what it's set at. If you switch to PRO photo mode, you're even more restricted... so it's not just you, Trevor. PS I'm a professional photographer (meaning I've been paid to license or have published my photos - not as in I make my entire living from that craft), and I TEACH photography. To understand why digital zoom is usually counter productive, image you have a camera that captures 300x300 pixels. If you "digitally" zoom this 3x, you are now capturing only 10,000 (100x100) rather than the possible 90,000 pixels. Of course the actual pixels are MUCH higher, but the effect is the same.

    I'm a software engineer and I do some photography from time to time. In my opinion, the software behind Samsung's user interface is just awful - the camera app is a little better, but still lacking. They force all users to be treated as totally ignorant by not exposing any control over which optical lens is used. Samsung's camera software switches which lens is used "automatically". If you select the single tree icon, it will probably switch to the telephoto lens, but it might in fact use digital zoom on the wide lens (I am using the plain S21, so only one telephoto lens for me). In my experience, it will switch back and forth kind of randomly when I'm in the 2x - 4x range. As an experiment, you can definitely determine which lens currently in use by covering one lens at a time with your finger, and once the image is totally blocked by your finger, then you've found which lens it is using. It is quite often not the lens you wanted. I understand that _most_ people don't know much about photography, lenses, and optical/digital zoom. But to not expose any control for those of us who actually know what we are doing is such an Apple thing to do. Huge disappointment.

    EXACTLY! It's beyond annoying. Selected the 10x zoom to take photos of dogs at a dog park. What it actually did was use 3x zoom with cropping so all the photos are heavily pixelated. I'm beginning to think what we need to do is put stickers over the lenses we don't want it to use.

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@compassioncampaigner728 The problem is with the software. And unfortunately it's too complicated to explain how to do it reliably. As @Seth Nielsen noted, if it just allowed you to directly select the lens, you'd be good. But the camera does stupid things behind your back. So, to actually use the 10x optical zoom, many things have to be true: a. you can't be in 3:4 108Mp mode (that only uses ONE lens); b. your subject can't be too close (closer than about a meter) or the camera automatically switches to a different lens, c. your telephoto lens (bottom one) must not be blocked by a finger or case. The minimum subject distance is about 3 feet based on my trials... so the net is, if you try switching to 10x mode and the subject is too close, you may end up with 3x Optical and 3x digital zoom. AND whenever you try to do anything ABOVE 10x (30x or 100x) it USUALLY switches to the 10x lens except if the subject is too close, then you just get really bad pixelization. In general you do NOT want to use digital zoom (anything above 10x) as you're not really gaining anything except possibly an ability to read fine print - which would usually be too close to use the 10x lens!
