An absurdly implausible, campy ending that somehow makes me literally shed a tear for all its beautiful heart. And in a SF parody, no less.

This movie had the balls to alienate a huge chunk of its potential box office returns in favor of reaching sci-fi fans on a personal level, specifically trekkies. Pretty much the opposite of what's being done today.

Its because its a sci-fi that just wants to entertain people. It doesn't push white guilt, it doesn't push sexual deviancy, it doesn't push political hot topics, its just wholesome. The public LOVES this, but the minority that are in power and control hollywood know they have a monopoly and so we'll eat what we are given due to lack of options. :(

@@mainstreetsaint36 I mean, scifi shows have always had diverse casts, ever since the original Star Trek crew. The fact they featured an African-American actress as well as a Japanese-American actor when there was a lot of negative feelings towards both was a big deal at the time. To not feature a diverse cast in this spoof would have gone against the source material.

Even Guy grew into a role as the film reached its climax; even though he was given the order to hold fire and divert all systems to maintaining the ships Plasma Armor, he still manned the weapons console like someone worthy of the position. While I agree that the movie is worthy of a sequel, the current pool of talented writers has been terribly diluted by the explosion of channels making their own content and splitting up all of the pools of writers that used exist in the movie industry. All they can come up with is remakes of movies that were near perfect the first time around, so they make another one in (usually forlorn) hopes that lightning will strike twice. Which it does in real life but not in the movie industry. No disrespect to any actor intented - but did we really NEED a remake of "True Grit"? Did we actually NEED a reboot of "Fantastic Four"? Given the Batman character, did we really NEED a 1940s serial, a 1960s campy TV series, then did we need Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Eric Bana, Ben Affleck, and Robert Patinson taking their shots at the character? Same, of course, applies to Superman with the 1940s serial movie incarnations, then George Reeves on TV, Christopher Reeve, Dean Cain, ... cripes, that list could go on for a while. In any case, the point is that by now, the sequel would probably be joyless. Special effects out the wazoo, but dialogue so painful as to induce peptic distress. I would say "No, don't even think about it."
