This seems to be a parallel to how the British army was a accustomed to doing with their set-piece battle formations, from the experiences from the wars they fought in Europe, to what the battles were against Colonial irregulars during revolutionary war of independence against British rule. There were rules of warfare that the colonists followed, just not those the British forces were accustomed to.

When has war ever been civilized!

We have rules for war. Every faction has its own rules. Enemy rules are irrelevant.

I think we should all step back and remember the first tenant of American combat doctrine which is to ignore all other tenants of American combat doctrine when it is advantageous to do so.

Having no rules of war is indication of barbarity.
