I don’t know how atp rankings work, it seems that Medvedev would be number 1 because there is only a 45 point difference from making round 3 and 4 since he is 150 points ahead I thought he would keep his ranking. Can someone explain how this works?

Finally a winning performance by Monfils in a tight match. He never fails to entertain, but he often loses big matches like this. I’m so happy for him to get a win. The underhand serve…icing on the cake.

Congrats to Monfils. That said, the underarm serve should be banned. You stay back there waiting for an 130 mph serve. You can't defend both.

@@sorellman Thats the stupid way to look at it. The smart way is see that a player is trying to gain an advantage by playing super far behind the baseline. Well an advantage doesn't come for free it comes at the cost of giving up open court closer to the net that you aren't covering anymore.

@@miaash3870 Novak is nowhere near as athletic as Monfils. They are both flexible, but monfils on high level is just plain dangerous, while Novak is the more consistent fighter. But Novak will never hit the winners Monfils does. Monfills generally makes more errors. So they just cannot be compared. While Monfils is more athletic, Novak wil win most matches because of his general mental strength and fighting spirit to make the opponent always play another ball.

I couldn't agree more. Did so much to improve his game, but some things have always remained the same with him, and that's his incredible shotmaking.

I always thought that Monfils defensive style of play didn’t match his full potential given his athletic prowess. I suppose playing aggressive requires the confidence in your game that he might’ve lacked at times. But oh my, he really showed all of it today! Congrats Gael!!!

I totally agree 👍 he's ALWAYS HAD THE SKILLS/TALENT but like Sloan, he relies on his defense and seems to prefer reacting instead of dictating play. I've been a huge fan if non the less. A couple of years ago I thought he had a break thru on aporoach but he reverted back 🤔

He won't keep it up...he's only great to watch when he's playing well. One of the worst players to watch when he phones it in.

He didn't let him breathe literally, his shots were incredibly precise and strong throughout the whole match. An incredible performance.

I live in Ukraine and for me his victory is a great support in our struggle for independence. Yes, I understand that this is all very subjective, but when every day Putin's bandits bomb cities and kill civilians, it is not always possible to remain neutral towards the Russians. And yet Medvedev did not publicly condemn Russian aggression.

I'm so happy for Monfils! This is your show - enjoy every moment.

Mia perhaps he's playing so well because he's a happily married guy now. Perhaps he wanted to beat Medvedev for his wife's sake too. He's a great bloke. Love his style of play. Unpredictable, explosive and great fun. Elaina is a lucky lady to have such a great partner.

I’ve been to the U.S. Open 4 times Gael is the most impressive tennis player I’ve seen I just wish he could consistently put matches like this together. Gael has the talent that could have won 20 plus major titles!

Monfils game is getting sharper and more disciplined. We always get a glimpse of what he can do.

Great match to watch. I love it. And an underhand serve keeps them honest and helps you stay in the opponent's head. As soon as they call it unsportsmanlike, mission complete.

Monfils is a very genuine and nice person. After the practice, he signed for everyone who were there in line. I mean every single one of them ( I was the third from the last).
