There’s a bit of a taxonomical debate on whether the African Forest elephant should belong to a prehistoric genus with the straight Tusked elephants (Palaeoloxdon) or whether it should remain the same genus as the bush elephant (Loxodonta) Also the genus Palaeoloxdon had not only the largest elephants to ever exist, but also the smallest

Even worse, the bull looked like it was in musth. Look closely down the elephants face and you will see a dark liquid that is running down the elephants face along with digging its tusks to the ground as a dominance sign at 0:20.

Looks like Loango here. Spent some time in Gabon back in 2006. Loango, Lope, a couple of days at the WWF station in Ivindo (elephants, sitatunga, gorillas...great place, but difficult to access). Fabulous country. Best-kept secret in Africa.

Thankyou! Most of poaching in Gabón is coming from noethern bordering countries Camerún and Congo. Fortunately biggest remaining populations of forest Elephant live un Gabón thanks to a well stablished network of protected áreas accounting for almost 12% of its territory. The biggest together with Costa Rica.

The African rain-wood elephant’s genus name Loxodonta means slanting tooth and re means round-eared and refers to how its earsfers to the diamond-shaped ridges in its molars while its species name cyclotis means round-eared and refers to how its ears are rounder than those of the African bush or plains elephant. By rain wood, I mean a “rainforest.” By rain-wood elephant, I mean a “forest” elephant. Can you believe that?
The do not like the attitude of the man in the video. He should have stayed inside the vehicle. It is foolhardy. Confrontations between humans and wild animals may turn fatal to both.
