Gabon's Ali Bongo: The Rise and Fall | Gabon Coup
In the early hours of Wednesday 30 August 2023, military officers in Gabon announced they were seizing power from President Ali Bongo Ondimba in a stunning coup, threatening the Bongo family’s half-century rule over the central African nation.
The soldiers said they were annulling the results of recent polls in which Ali Bongo had been declared the winner but the opposition said the election had been rigged. But who is Ali Bongo and how did Gabon get to this point? To some, he is a spoilt, playboy prince who saw ruling the oil-rich Gabon as his birthright. This one-time aspiring musician stepped into his father's shoes to continue his family's rule.
In this episode of African Biographics, we cover the rise of Ali Bongo as well as events leading to his fall.

Thanks so much for this commentary very educational.
Right on! I really like this channel, glad this came so fast! Also the fact that in these coups so far it hasn’t been necessary to use violence against the former ruler themselves. It shows how really pathetic they are and shows the new rulers are capable of mercy, in my opinion.

Thanks for this fast video. I've shared with friends.
Hey Tatenda and thank you for the video so quickly released. I used to live in Libreville Gabon but now I live abroad. A country with such a small population but blessed with too much minerals and yet there’s so much poverty and a lack of infrastructures. Just like any other African country, the former colonial powers with their friends aka dictators are a hindrance to Africa’s development. Examples are many: Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea Conakry, Niger and now Gabon. All have a lot of minerals that France is too happy to take home and yet these populations see no change at all. The result: people revolt and oust their presidents. I can only hope that the new guys in power will do good to the people that have suffered long enough under Bongo family.

The new guys are usually worse . Military dictators have done Africa no good. African leaders are stupid, dumb and corrupt . Stop blaming the colonists,it's not France and England causing Ali Bongo not to build schools ,good roads ,hospitals and invest in technology. It's the African man's dumbness ,greed ,lack of vision and inferior intellect.

Man been waiting for you to do this.
The good news is that Ali Bongo is gone...the bad news is that the coup seems to look more like a family fight since the General in charge of the coup is a relative. The darker more cynical part of me says that the extended family of the Bongos were worried that given Ali's weakened state he may end up losing his grip on power permanently and if that were to happen the sweet times of kleptocracy would finally be over.

The timeliness of this biography is extremely impressive. I know nothing of the politics of Gabon, but based just on the lineup of nations that are condemning the coup, it appears this action may be a great step forward for the independence and sovereignty of the nation.

It is good to see a new power in Gabon but I still think they had one of the best democracy in central africa.
Power is contagious, after Ali B suffered the stroke he became a cabbage but he was still insistent on being president.... The happenings are very much okay since this is a self centred individual who could have groomed a successor and still continued to enjoy the trappings of power.
