Will do. I'm in NZ but a gabion is a gabion, aye? The ones I'm using have a divider in the centre which is a little fiddlier to wire in place than the end panels but with a little thought and pre wiring into square position it's no drama. Put a few together today and I have to admit that without your vid I would have made a balls of it. I had to spring for some decent linesman pliers and figured out that the cutting edge must be underneath, guess how? A pair of mole grips came in very handy to line up the awry bits which I could not weave together by brute strength. I measured the wire lengths at just shy of a fathom....... Stick your arms out sideways and cut one hand off... This left enough wire to weave the lid down from each side, more or less. Thanks again, nothing worse than doing a job a number of times to figure out the best way. Oh, any suggestions for sore hands? lol

What do you think of using hog rings instead of the looping method of binding wire? I think they are quicker but perhaps not as strong.

Looks pretty labor intensitive. I guess that's why gab-ions haven't caught on in the USA. Unskilled labor exists in the US, but not low cost unskilled labor. Just like Adobe, it's both a poor man and an rich man's building material.

I worked as a gabion and mattress maker in Australia and we did a 13,000 cage architectural causeway on an island a few years ago, good money. No idea why you don’t use pvc coated wire though, much better and easier to work with

We do offer PVC coated materials depending on the site conditions, however its 40% more expensive and clients generally choose the cheaper option.

Pse send your inquiry to louis@gabionbaskets.co.za, however for very fast flowing water with a velocity of in excess of 6m per second is above the critical limit for baskets, we then suggest covering the top of the basket or mattress with a concrete capping, so that the rock is prevented from moving and then ultimately damaging the mesh lids. kind rgds Louis Cheyne, Joannesburg, South Africa.

That is the purpose also in OSuth Africa, we need to create lot's of work for remote unskilled people, so they can at the least support their families and learn a new skill.

Too much work,eh? How about spiral wire to knit the corners. Much easier. And a heavier gauge mesh would be nice to reduce bulging. Too much work also to build the tie backs to prevent bulging. All that wire work with no safety glasses? Not smart.

@@LouisCheyne Cheaper ? Omg, price is not everything. But it is not as good looking as welded gabions. Wovenmesh r bullshit, in our country nobody wants it. Material is possible to be cheaper, but realize is so much complicated. It is possible to use in river with PVC coating on wire, there is better to copy terrain.
