"The ultimate one can achieve, is not to interpret music but to understand it." Günter Wand stays true to this motto during his entire conducting career and worked with his constant devotion to music for over twenty years with the then NDR Symphony Orchestra. Wand was Chief Conductor of the orchestra from 1982 to 1991 and remained closely associated as its Honorary Conductor for life.

Impeccable Bruckner, consistent and cohesive. I love his tone and color for the strings. Best Schubert 8 that I've ever heard. Very underated but very great interpreter.

His entire Schubert cycles were among the best, with Böhm and Suitner and Abbado and Harnoncourt and Kertesz. Sorry, I like Schubert cycles.
