G.I. Joe (Arcade) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

Ойындар

A playthrough of Konami's 1992 run-and-gun arcade rail shooter, G.I. Joe.
Played through as Duke on the default (medium) difficulty setting.
G.I. Joe was always one of my absolute favorite arcade games, and I have a lot of good memories playing this one. Back in 1994, when I was in seventh grade, we had a restaurant/community center on the school grounds. Nearly every day at lunch time I'd head over there with a couple of friends, grab a piece of pizza, and make for the corner where the four-player G.I. Joe cabinet sat. There was always a crowd around the machine so you had to get there early if you wanted to play, and I distinctly remember that no matter where you were in the building, you could hear the constant drone of explosions, screams, and orchestra hits over the din. We never actually got through it - lunch was only a half-hour long, and nobody ever had enough quarters - but still, it was always a fantastic way to temporarily put schoolwork out of mind.
Unlike most of Konami's early 90s cartoon games, G.I. Joe isn't a beat 'em up. It's a pseudo-3D rail-shooter that has you running "into" the screen as an endless barrage of bullets, enemy soldiers, and heavy artillery rain down. The effect is similar to what is used in many of Sega's arcade titles like Galaxy Force 2 and Power Drift, making heavy use of sprite-scaling to create a smooth 3D effect with 2D graphics. Though it might not be "realistic" by any means, it still impresses me to this day as much as it day back in the 90s. It may only be running at 288x224, but the smoothness of the animation and the tendency for everything to blow up non-stop means that you'll hardly notice. It's pretty amazing to think that under the hood, a 16mhz 68000 CPU is running the show, especially when you compare the game to its original incarnation: it's essentially a high-octane remake of a 1988 arcade release named Devastators, but the improvements made for G.I. Joe are so vast that the games barely resemble one another. Still, Devastators is an interesting oddity if you're curious about how G.I. Joe came about.
With up to 2 or 4-players depending on cabinet configuration, you get your choice of Duke, Snake Eyes, Scarlett, or Roadblock to play as. The game automatically scrolls forward, and you use the joystick to aim the crosshair: while you don't control the character directly, your crosshair controls your position, so be careful that you don't put yourself in the line of fire while setting up your shots! You have two buttons - one fires your standard gun and can be upgraded to rapid-fire, while the other fires the missile launcher which can be refilled by breaking barrels and other random on the battlefield. It's careful to not overcomplicate itself, but don't worry - you'll be too distracted by the constant chaos on-screen to notice how simple the action really is.
The graphics, especially by 1992 standards, are absolutely incredible. The characters all look exactly like they did in the cartoon, the backdrops are bright and colorful (even the underground ones!), and the sense of scale is suitably epic. When Cobra's ship rises from ground right in front of you during Mission 2, prepare to be amazed. The environments deserve a lot of praise for their sheer destructibility, too. Pretty much anything that isn't the ground or the sky can be blown sky high - fire on the gas lines at the chemical plant and you'll see entire buildings go up in a ball of flame, or shoot the stalactites free in the cavern base to crush tanks and garages. Everything goes.
The sound is just as good as the graphics, and it stands out as one of my all-time favorite Konami soundtracks. It uses the classic Konami combination of brash horns, synthesizer leads, and orchestra hits, and all of it will get you hyped as s**t, I promise. It's all super energetic, dramatic, and loud, and it's all very memorable. Throw in some of that classic old-school voice acting and you've got a top audio production.
I really wish that this had appeared on console systems. I have no idea why it never did, but this would have been epic on the Sega CD, Saturn, or PlayStation. Regardless, if you like Konami's stuff, this is one of their best coin-ops, and absolutely deserves some time spent with it.
Note: The last known revision of MAME to run the game properly is version .115 released back in 2007. I recorded this video using Mame32FX .115.

Exactly. I think with graphical improvements game designers get lazier. All the best games including fighting games were still made in the 90's. The only hope I see is Arc System creating games that look 2d but with 3d models like GGXrd.

  • @Sinn0100

    @Sinn0100

    11 ай бұрын

@@affegpus4195 I don't know...I think the Neo Geo AES/MVS could run a two player version of it fine. The Sega CD was built to run games like Gi Joe and if you account for the ability to fake 90% of what you see with FMV (like Silpheed) it could be done albeit on a lesser scale. The Atari Jaguar, Panasonic 3DO, and 32X should be able to replicate the arcade without much issue. Especially the Jaguar and 32X as they both featured their own competent Super Scaler games (3 games on the 32X and 1 on the Jag). Now, I tried to research what hardware was used to create Gi Joe and I didn't find anything. However, I did discover that Robotron cabs were used with conversion kits to create Gi Joe. That likely means that the Motorola 68K processors were used as the brunt of the power and if that's the case producing the game on the higher end machines in 1992/1993/1994 was possible. You might have to pull some software trickery but it is possible, I think. Addendum- Now, there actually was a piece of hardware available to the Japanese public that could run Gi Joe Arcade full out without concessions. That machine is the Sharp X68000 personal computer that launched in 1987. It was a sprite throwing, number crunching, absolute beast of a computer and it made everything else look pathetic by comparison. It smacks a Neo Geo AES around like it is an Nes front loader in 1991. Seriously, look it up and it will blow your mind.

The instant I saw this in the arcades, I knew I had to play it. I grew up on the GI Joe toys and cartoons in the 80s, and even though the game seemed to arrive a few years late to really capitalize on the popularity, I saw enough people my own age playing the game that I knew it really didn't seem to matter. It was a chance to relive our childhood imaginary battles, even though childhood was just a few years removed! Such a fantastic game. I think the only complaint I ever had about it is that nobody sounds like they do in the show. Like, at all.

G.I. Joe was originally announced as a last-minute replacement for acquiring the licensed for the upcoming Batman sequel, Batman Returns. And was looking to create an arcade game based on the property, just in time for the 1992's movie release. Konami had mistakenly thought that the license would allow them to create both home and arcade titles based on the property, but unfortunately, it only allowed for the home. In its place, they decided to use A Real American Hero by the name of G.I. Joe.

Great arcade game. I still play it as Snake Eyes cause frankly hes the only Joe that would actually go gung ho when needed. The only error is that they gave Snake Eyes a voice. Love the game still. Hate Duke though

Since this is GI Joe, shouldn't the object of the game be to miss all of those Cobra soldiers, not actually hit them?

Why such an old version of Mame? I played the game on more recent ones and it seemed just fine, have those lost some features that allowed a more precise emulation of it? Is that old version more recommended for other Konami games as well? I remembered this game was very impressive for the time, but not it had a level of environmental destruction rarely seen in arcade games in general. It even uses a little 3D modeling in cutscenes, even though the mountains are made with some Vista Pro - like software and look very plastic and cheesy compared to the pixel art of the rest. Another thing it gets right is to avoid making the bosses look "really" dead. You have no certainty Baroness, Destro and Cobra Commander haven't survived narrowly, ready to be fought again another day.

Newer versions don't display all of the effects properly. The most noticable problems tend to be the missing water in the cave and the platform/floor at the airplane fight. The older versions display those scenes fine. Afaik it's just this one - the other Konami games seem to be just fine.

Thanks. I asked because I know that a few other Konami games have some effects that aren't emulated properly, if at all (like some cross-fade effects in Mystic Warriors), but AFAIK they have never managed to do something about those to begin with. I'm checking other videos of GI Joe and, in fact, beside the lack of water in the Destro boss fight most of the cave section is horribily glitched. The lack of floor in the Baroness boss fight is not very noticeable though. How strange that it was formerly emulated properly - sometimes even the slightest change in the code can ruin things.

Definitely, but I'm not sure the SNES had quite enough power for this one... maybe if it had an SFX2 chip for better scaling? Hahahaha, I also imagine that Nintendo would require them to change the intro since the first scene makes Cobra look a lot like Hitler leading a Nazi rally.

Interesting...there is some kind of message that pops up at approximately 6:38-6:40 during your playthrough. I don't know if this is a subliminal message or some type of error message? It might be the MAME settings menu because it looks like ESC is at the top of the message. Unfortunately, no matter what I do I can't catch it in time. It stays on the screen for one frame and it's gone. If you blink you will miss it. What is it? Addendum- I suggested a possible subliminal message because it wouldn't be the first time I have caught something like that from entertainment made in the early 1990's.
