G-9000DB - Sansui Receiver - Most Beautiful Ever? Repair Restoration Testing Vintage Stereo Audio

Ойын-сауық

A Sansui G-9000DB stereo receiver repair, restoration and testing video. Old electrolytic capacitors and troublesome diodes were replaced. I discuss why old electrolytic capacitors should be replaced by providing manufacturers data. The power supply assemblies (F-2809 & F-2810) in the Sansui G-9000DB receiver were completely rebuilt. The tone control assembly (F-2799) was rebuilt. This Sansui G-9000DB built from 1978-1979 was then bench tested with an audio analyzer. This G-9000DB did more then 170 watts per channel on the test bench while easily beating the receivers total harmonic distortion (THD) rating. This was a restoration that after 40 years of service this vintage receiver needed. This Sansui G-9000DB receiver now sounds great and will be reliable for decades to come.

I inherited my unit from my dad a few years ago. He had always promised I would get it since I was a teenager. He bought it from a pawn shop back in the early 80s along with a pair of sp-x9 speakers. At the time we lived in a singlewide trailer out in the boonies of Southern Oregon. We spent many days cranking it up listening to Grandfunk Railroad, Foghat, and just about anything good. I was amazed at how crystal clear everything sounded. You could hear things in the music you hadnt noticed before even though you've heard it over and over on the radio. I wish I still had those speakers. He never turned it up past 5. I could swear it was gonna blow the windows out of the house. Right after he reluctantly handed the receiver over to me I was at a yard sale and everything was free. I saw a pair of old speakers that I glanced at and passed by thinking they were kinda rattty looking. At a second look I saw the sansui logo and I had to have them. It was meant to be. They are LM-330s. I didn't expect much out of them but they were speakers I thought. Boy was I surprised when I hooked them up! The stereo hadn't been hooked up for a couple years or so since the other speakers were blown out by a drunken uncle. Unfortunately they were not kept. But wow these little 2 way 60w speakers have some punch! They sound great. Not quite as good as the ones I remember but damn I've missed hearing a good stereo sound. I love how clean it is even loud. I scored on the speakers. The unit has had no work done to it and could use some tlc. The controls are a bit crackly and the channels cut in and out but after fiddling with the knobs it still sounds great after all these years. I've cleaned the pots once. prob needs to be done again. I am very happy to have it. I Someday I'll get a pair of those sp-x9's

My goodness. I'm 51 years old and until I started watching your videos I never realized that I had this much sentimentality for audio equipment. My father, uncle(his brother), as well as myself all devoted a lot of time and money to this type of equipment, sure. But as time has gone on and I've grown older, somewhere down the line I forgot how much enjoyment stereo equipment brought to me, my friends, and my family. Your videos have just brought a flood of great memories all rushing back to me. I sincerely thank you for this. I'm subscribed.

It was sometime in the mid 70s my best friends father USMC came home from Overseas with a unit close to today's featured rec. Along with a turntable and 4 huge sansui speakers . Whenever his parents would go out we would crank that baby up . The first album we ever played on it was the new release of pink Floyd Dark side of the moon. Need I say more.

I was a TV/Audio bench tech in the 70’s, went on to become a Field Engineer for NCR in 1980 & retired a few years back. Anyway in 79 I was a tech for Audio Genesis here in Glens Falls, NY. They were a big Yamaha shop & someone traded in a 1976 Pioneer SX1050, 120W/channel receiver which I picked up for $200 bucks! Still have it although it hadn’t been re-capped but still sounds great, love it! 3 years ago I ran into & started dating a woman I was with for a year when I worked as a bench tech. She couldn’t believe I still had my system, AR8 Speakers, Kenwood KD3055 Turntable, JVC KD-A5 Cassette Deck & late 80’s Yamaha CD-300 CD Player. Hoping this time the relationship lasts as long as my system has.

Found one of these when I was working at a thrift store years ago unloading donations from a trailer. Pulled a couple of bags of clothes away to reveal the holy grail of receivers, growing up my dad had a g-8000 series so when I saw the 9000 I knew exactly what it was. Bought it that day for $35 on lunch break. Trying to collect a complete sansui set, have that receiver, a reel to reel and a tape deck so far

I have a AU5900 my dad bought it in 1976 in Honduras. This replaced a Sansui Receiver that he bought in Guatemala in 1970 it was the Sansui 600 L solid state receiver. My dad moved from Honduras to Panama in 1981 and he took his Sansui Integrated Amp with him along with a Sansui Tape Deck SC-333, a Pioneer Equalizer, a Sony Reel to Reel and a Thorens TD 164. After the invention of Panama in 1999 my dad moved to the states and put all this equipment in storage. My sister then moved it to Mexico, Argentina and finally in the 2000s came to the USA where it remained in storage in Miami. Christmas of 2019 my sister gifted me the Sansui AU5900, the Thorens turntable, the Pioneer equalizer, and the Sansui Tape Deck. All but the Sansui AU5900 need extensive repair. I cleaned up the Sansui Amp and cleaned all the contacts and I am now using it as my main Amp replacing a modern Yamaha Receiver. Based on the serial number my Amp was built on April 15, 1976 in Japan. that makes it almost 44 years old, the sound is clear, and rich, the Yamaha receiver sounds like a tin can in comparison.

95% of my vintage stereo gear came from family members who passed away (receivers, cassette decks, RtR machines, etc). I remember them & their stereos fondly as a kid, so I'm passionate about keeping the gear running and in tip-top shape. I only have 2 receivers that were acquired myself, one being a Marantz 2230 that I bought off ebay and a Kenwood KR9600 that my buddy gave me after his dad passed.

I use to sell this unit and many others like it back in the mid to later 70s for a store called "Custom Hi-Fi" I worked there as a salesman for a few years. I fell in love with these receivers, Sansui was my favorite among the units we sold and we sold them all. I never was able to purchase this one but back in the mid 80's, I bought a mint - Sansui 9900z receiver for just $100.00 from a pawn shop. It still works today and I use it all the time. There is no price I would sell it for today. I think it was the very next model year after your Sansui G-9000DB stereo receiver came out. Mine was also the last year of the big monster receivers that Sansui produced before changing everything. Mine is rated at 160 watts per channel at rated power and is DC powered of course and it actually has a fan in the back that will come on if the unit ever gets too warm. I would still love to have the Sansui G-9000DB, I think it is one of the best looking units I've ever seen. Mine specs out the same as yours and is basically the same machine but it is looks different and has a Digital Quartz Synthesizer Tuner in the FM/Am, that is the main difference in the two models. Works great, still today! Oh, I know this one came from a service man also that got in a financial pinch, divorce I think, and lost this receiver in pawn plus a Nakamichi 682 ZX Tape Deck that I was lucky enough to purchase that same day for $50.00, it retailed for 36 times that, literally. The Pawn Shop people had no idea what this tape deck really was, but I did luckily, it was a good day! I know the man who lost this pawn loved this equipment and I did check back later and found out he never came back for his stereo equipment. He not only lost these two pieces but I remember he also lost some Sansui speakers, turntable and a reel to reel deck and maybe an equalizer! Didn't need the last pieces mentioned.

I enjoyed the video on the Sansui G-9000. I bought my G-9000 in 1978 at the Navy Exchange in Yokosuka Japan. I stowed it on the ship until we finished our cruise and returned to our home port in Pearl Harbor. I then shipped the equipment home via US mail. Once I got out of the Navy, I used the receiver for a while and then started having problems with the right channel cutting out. I took it to a stereo repair shop, but they didn't fix the problem. It has sat in a box in my basement since. It still looks like new. I would like to get it overhauled but not sure where to take in in the St. Louis Missouri area. I know how to de-solder and solder and not afraid to take things apart to fix as it used to be part of my job. However, I'm not sure I want to take this overhaul on myself.

About 20 years ago I did my homework in search of my dream stereo. I distinctly remember this and the other G series at the stereo room we would visit while going to the record stores. I could not afford but a SA 200 back then and still have it in use. But after reading reviews and a bunch at AK, this was the one I settled on. The looks and matching sound......wow. Just 20 years ago, you could have one shipped to your door for 300 total. So I did and now have 4 of them all under 300 bucks each......lol. I just bought a high end cap kit that includes recapping the giant filter caps too.....your vid will definitely aid me in that. Thanks so much for all you do.

I still have and use my Pioneer SA-8500II integrated amplifier I bought in HS in 1979. At one time I had a turntable, graphic equalizer, and two cassette decks hooked up to it. Currently I have a Yamaha 5 disc changer running through it hooked to a pair of Infinity speakers. It has been to California and back with me while I was in the Air Force. I still remember when I was looking to purchase my first CD changer, the guy asked me what I was going to hook it up to, and I said my Pioneer amp. He told me the amp would work splendidly with the changer. It's been a great amp, the only issues I've ever had was dirty pots. I have a Sansui 7070 a friend gave to me, I would love to find someone to go over it and get it working again.

It was the hub for my listening system quarterbacking a JVC turntable, a Technics dual tape deck and a pair of Energy speakers . Love watching your videos as I can see the passion you have for your vintage gear. Awesome stuff!

Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching. I find it cool that so many people still have their audio equipment from decades ago like yourself. Good Stuff! I still have my first integrated amp a Kenwood KA-3500 and my Sansui TU-717 tuner that I purchased in the late 70's. I was a teenager at the time working at Pizza Hut so equipment like the Sansui G-9000DB was out of my price range.

So nice to hear you talk about your gear. Nice to know there are other crazy old audio heads in the universe. I switch around. I just switched out my Onkyo and Pioneer receivers for some separates from NAD and Rotel. Fun for some of us, boring and pointless for others. I showed my gear to a young person (21 years old) and he said "all those boxes to listen to music? have you ever hear of a smartphone?" I looked insane to him but I'm having fun.

There used to be a department store in the 70's called Sam Soloman Catalog Company. They were like an upscale Kmart that had a catalog that somehow had an aesthetic that was.... "70's modern". As a kid I much preferred it to Sears. Anyhow... Their store had a hi-fi showroom: a darkened room lit by stereo gear faceplates. Such a vibe; and they carried Pioneer, Sansui, Marantz, etc.. legit hi-fi gear. And usually the cheapest as well. I got a Pioneer SX3700 for Christmas (with fluoriscan meters... so mood-setting!) which I still have, but can't afford to get refreshed/capped... But a cousin had a DB9090, and it sounded wonderful. I really wish I had that receiver, it was in my possession for a few months and it was so pleasurable listening to music on it . Uhg .. Sad.

Like David, I bought most of my equipment from the Yokosuka Naval Station Exchange. I still have almost all of it, and everything works. Sansui QRX-9001 (still the best receiver made, along with the QRX-999 Euro model), Technics SL-1300 turntable, Akai GX-630D-SS open reel tape deck, Pioneer CT-F950 cassette deck, and Bose 501 speakers (originally had Pioneer CS-77a speakers, and later upgraded to 901's, but the 501 were reconed and still work.) The receiver and Akai deck were restored over a decade ago, while the Pioneer got new belts a few years ago. The Technics has never needed any work, and still plays CD4 vinyl perfectly. As far as the most beautiful vintage receiver of the 70's, I would have to give my vote to the Akai AS-980. That thing was a monster!

That’s one of those “if I could go back in time” life moments, buying my stereo at the PX. I think I did pretty good, but I’d love a second shot at looking at all the great gear of the time. My original purchase was the big G Sansui receiver, a Pioneer CTF-950 cassette deck, Sansui FR-D4 turntable, Akai reel to reel, and 4 (yes, 4) Pioneer HPM-900 speakers. Of everything, just the G8700DB survives. I’ve upgraded turntable (JVC QL-Y55f), CD player (Denon DCD-3520 CDP), and a mint pair of Sansui SP-5500 speakers. May not be “audiophile” in some books, but it is a kick ass vintage system that sounds incredible.

The SA-900 has separate bass and treble controls and was the first high powered unit of it's time. The condition is near mint and never serviced, currently it is on my bench waiting to be serviced. I purchased one of my units from a service man as well. The older brother of an acquaintance I had had Who ended up to be my neighbor years ago. Long story short he was stationed in Hawaii at Schofield Barracks (of course) and picked up an Onkyo Integra ( The amp with the 2 huge meters) a Kenwood pre amp, Samsung tuner & a set of Cerwin Vega d-15s And a CD player of some sort. Anyhow, We became Neighbors and later, best friends. At some point he was ready to move and wanted a new start on belongings, including stereo equip. ( He wanted to go modular, smaller) and did not want to move the old stuff. I purchased everything he had for a very low price, All in working order I might add. However, before taking possession of the speakers he decided to sell those to another friend so he would get a shot at things too. As I already had my own set of AT-12 Cerwin Vegas And lived in a house not large enough to justify both sets, I agreed to let his Other buddy have the speakers. Cut to today, I still have everything I bought from him. All still in great condition. Minus a power button that doesn't function properly( But hooked up through the preamp I can power it up that way) Only other issue being (the welcome lights come on and then shut off as they should but the running lights don't come on and stay on as they should) . It had fallen off Of a small shelf which was its home once when his younger brother was rocking out while he was gone.. A matter of changing a switch in the rear of the amp. I actually identified the issue at 1 point and had it working but the switch since shot craps.. I don't use it quite as much as some of my other stuff but it is still hooked up and I rock it once in a while when I get the urge ... still sounds as good as it did when I first purchased it & is rather powerful ( Don't recall the specs)...

Vintage Audio Addict my father used to be an electrical salesman in a South Australian retail chain called Radio Rentals, which have unfortunately closed all of their stores in SA just last year after over 50 years of being in the business. I think this is where I get my passion for HiFi from. I got my first HiFi system when I was just 14 years old, which used to be my father’s. It was a Technics system from the very early 1980’s, which consisted of a receiver, tape deck, EQ and a CD player, which was added on later. Eventually I had convinced my father to let me use his spare amplifier, which was a Technics SU-V2, which I liked better than the receiver.

A friend of mine had that exact system you were talking about. In 1982 we were listening to Joan Jett and the black hearts I love rock and roll and cracked the picture window in the front of the house. We may have had it turned half way oops. Great memories

My story, I worked at a tire shop back about 2006 and had only heard stories of Sansui receivers. A guy, Clay built eye glasses across the Blvd in Sansom Park Texas use to cook and bring us food sometimes so he said come get a couple bowls of soup. He was living in his shop so I went in the back all I saw was heat sinks with a giant dishwasher sitting on top. I'm like what is that he said a dishwasher I said no what's underneath and he said ahh just a radio and immediately I said I want it (thinking it was a Kenwood) I turned it around it was a 1978 G9000 non DB so I gave him $75 for it and some crappy thin box Kenwood speakers that I got rid of. That thing dimmed the lights when turned on. Sold it to my friends wife for his birthday for $250. Fast forward today, he passed away last week and I just bought it back close to the same condition for $300 with a pair of KL777 Kenwood speakers, not even going to see if it comes on its going straight to the shop for servicing or rebuild whatever the technician suggests. Not leaving my hands again I'll pass it on to my son when I'm gone...😊

Good video and nice receiver-Had a 9090 awhile back I restored. I replace caps about 90% of time and go back as close as possible to factory caps to maintain original sound. There have been a few cases where I replaced a good cap with a modern cap and it actually sounded worse. Those cases are rare though and possibly has to do with engineering of the particular unit and the fact that many caps 70's used to be as much as 50% over rated value and nowadays you are lucky if you get one 10% over value due to modern manufacturing cost savings.

Great comments! The modern capacitors do make me wonder in the years down the road how they are going to hold up. The 40 and 50 year old electrolytic capacitors in older electronics of all kinds are getting to the point where over the next 10 years I believe there will be a very large fail rate. Electrolytic capacitors just don't last forever. Thanks again
