Red Komodo is an amazing camera and I own it, but it's not a documentary camera which I am learning quickly as I am in mites of shooting one right now. It's frustrating when shoot a run-n-gun vs. Arri Aimra or Usramini because you need quick switch between frame rate, ISO, Built-In ND filters, Kalvins etc, these buttons are available in physical form in these cameras; plus Arri Aimra is just ready to shoot out of the box anytime, you can keep it in the back of your truck and when the situation arises just pull it out and shoot, if you are going to be a professional DOC filmmaker I suggest look into Arri Amira first, it's the Rolls Royse of cameras vs. Red which is Bentley.

The Amira is for Sure a dream camera. The Komodo is amazing but we are moving too fast. More crew based sets, the Komodo is a fantastic camera for the work flow.

Arri Amira while having a fantastic picture, is far too heavy compared to the offerings these days. I owned one for 3 years and think the fx9 gives you the same benefits but with a lighter, faster set up.

I've used the pocket 4K for awhile and now upgrading to the Ursa Broadcast G2 for that 6K Braw and having an Ursa body that works for docs, events and cinema. As well as an Ursa having dual ISO for low light. Down the line I see myself getting the 12K, but for now I need more of a multipurpose camera.

I too have gone through most the black magic lineup starting with the pocket 4k and up to the G2. Beast of a lineup that essentially cemented my career…but damnit does that Sony look tempting.

Nice video Following your point about the best camera being the one you have it would be cool to do a comparison video where you put your ursa up against a low budget or old camera you have

Who gave you our video ideas checklist? Jokes aside, that is an idea we love. Showing that high quality products can be made on older gear. Thank you for the comment!

Amazing video! Couldn’t agree more. I’m on the fence in the ursa right now and what’s potentially around the corner with BM. I finally got to handle the ursa at Bh nyc this weekend and was blown away. What lense is making those amazing flares??

The URSA is truly a beast. We were only using sigma Art lenses the whole video. Either the 18-35, or the 24-70.

It’s why I refuse to sell it. I truly love the Fx6, but to have a camera like the URSA at the price now, it’s now more accessible than ever to shoot with high end power house cameras, if you’re willing to let go of auto focus lol.

Thanks for the effort ! I don't know if its operator skills or camera weight but the URSA G2 was the most smooth. Same shot / same operator / different camera would have been cool. Not to disgress at all but I can't help but wondering how you can professionaly work with komodo using the phone ? Wifi is so laggy !

That was more of a on the go setup for the Komodo, but he definitely was able to work quick on the fly with that setup.

The Komodo footage was out of focus and not graded correctly haha, but dig these comparisons

I think down the road, we want to link back up with that filmmaker and use the Komodo more rigged out. Unfortunately given our location and time, the Komodo was very near bones, so I admit, the comparison is a bit unfair. Hopefully we can amend that

I wish the C70 would have been in the mix. Codec, shutter angle, internal raw, 10 stops ND, not 6 stops, xlr on camera not handle, canon color science to name a few.

Unfortunately it’ll probably run you 10k or more to actually rig it out. Technically non of these cameras are. Each kit in this video is approximately 10k or more. Sorry for the confusion!

Red doesn't "own" raw, they made the smart (and infamous) move to get exclusive rights for compressed raw. (But things are probably gonna change now that Nikon won a lawsuit against them for a proprietary compressed raw). Uncompressed raw cannot be owned as it is just literally untouched and unprocessed images from a camera haha. Just fyi

Red's patent is specifically for compressed internal (in-camera) raw recording. And they did not lose the Nikon lawsuit. Nikon and Red agreed to drop their legal action against each other (a joint motion for dismissal). One could assume that Nikon benefits from this action. But there may have been an out-of-court settlement and licensing agreement. No one really knows. The result is that Nikon can keep the internal raw recording capability on the Z9.
