Fw190 Focke Wulf 190 A8/R2 Tamiya. Painting and weathering (Part2)

In this second parte I finish 1/48 Fw190 from Tamiya. I paint luftwage standar camuflage in east front and I apply different weathering effects: Oils, pigments and enamel washes.
I hope it will be useful and funny for all of you.

    Outstanding Pro job.....thanks for the video. With thousands of hours in higher-powered old taildraggers, if I may add some tec. for you all. In the real world, the elevator of a TAIL DRAGER is usually in the full down position without a pilot in the cockpit. This is due to the controls not in balance without air moving over the surfaces and it is easier to push the control stick forward in order to exit the cockpit.

    To be honest, you are totally right, in this aircraft combated in 1944 Leutnan Klaus Bretsneider, defending the Reich of B17 USAAF attack....When I Painted the lower engine department in yellow it was a mistake :(. If I paint with Tamiya or hobby color, it's not necesarry let dry paint so much before to apply the Montex Mask (some minutes is enough). Thank you again mate!!

    Tech question. With my airbrush, doing the spotted mottling along the sides of the fuselage, I get overspray which on a 1/72 scale model isn’t so obvious. However, am I not thinning my paint enough? Or is it a limitation of my airbrush? I use a medium pressure and am very close to the model when I spray. Will thinning the paint a bit more help with overspray?

  • @TurbineModels

    @TurbineModels

    It could be both things. Are you using tamiya paints?...If you are using laquer paint like tamiya or mr hobby, then, ratio should be:75% thinner + 25% paint ( a bit thinner than usual). Presssure should be also a bit lower than usual. About your airbrush, in 1/72, what kind of needle are you using?, I recommend you 0,2 mm one, otherwise final result will be too big. But what I really think it’s most important, is practice a lot on an old kit because it is a bit difficult to get the control doing the spotted mottling....cheer up!!!

  • @cygnus618

    @cygnus618

    Thank you. I am using an Iwata Neo which I believe is a 0.3 needle. I am using Tamiya paints but I was not thinning out the paints enough. I would say I thinned about 50/50. I’m getting good results if I take the time to mask properly. But the small dots I need to make the mottling on the sides is where I’m losing out. So I will look at getting an airbrush with a smaller needle. I really do enjoy building the 1/72 scale planes. I didn’t think I would enjoy them so much. So far I’ve built the Fw-190, Bf-109 and the Spitfire. Lots of fun. Thank you for your reply. My next challenge is weathering like you do. Amazing work.

    Thank you for your nice words :). I also think the only important thing in this hobby is enjoy, I was building kits for several years and I'm enjoying everyday with each new model that I do. Probably, if you are using and Iwata NEO your needle is 0,35mm, it's good to apply base coat on your models but a bit big to paint cammo details... Good luck and continue enjoying! :)

    The way I like doing spot patterns on my models. Is to trace onto loose leaf paper the body or wing then use all different sizes of punches to create patterns. Then use that as my template. And by just shifting the pattern around you get a unique pattern.
