This video is a hands-on session showing the modelling of a future wonder material called Carbon Nanotube Composites in #ABAQUS. Carbon nanotubes are hexagonal-grid arranged carbon atoms that are folder into a cylindrical shape. They are wonder materials because of their enhanced mechanical, thermal and electrical properties. They have widespread applications from space technology to manufacture of truck tires. The focus of this video is on Carbon Nanotube composite.
Carbon Nanotube composites consist of a single or multiple layers of carbon nanotubes within a binding matrix (in our case an epoxy polymeric material). They have excellent mechanical properties. This video introduces the concept of carbon nanotubes before describing three modelling approaches used for their numerical investigation.     Yes, absolutely @Walaa Enab! It should follow similar approach as I did here. You just need to create multiple CNTs and wrap them around one another to represent the multiple walls, and then embed all those within the matrix. If there is a large vote for such this by the likes on this comment, then I will consider it as a video worth making.

    Dr. Okereke thank you again for another interesting and helpful video. It would be a shame not to upload a video with the calculations of the properties of this RVE. Also, any comment on the use of hollow cylinders for the CNTs instead of solid cylinders which is also used in the literature? ( what is the trade in , for each case? ). thank you in advance.

    Hello Faidwn, thanks again for your interest in the channel. I will think about the calculation of the properties of the effective properties and maybe make a video to that effect. The length of the current one was already getting big so it might make sense ot have another video for the effective properties. On choice of RVE for CNT Composites between solid and hollow cylinders, this is a really interesting issue. Historically, some older papers have used the composite cylinder (CC) method which leverages on composite mechanics of UD composite. The only difference is that for a CNT, they will have to generate effective properties for the CC 'pretending it is a hollow cylinder' when it is actually modelled as a solid cylinder. It does give okay results but in terms of prediction of actual mechanics for finite deforming systems (when expected deformation/distortion - transverse - of the CNT will come in), the model struggles to accurately determine them. When I was thinking about setting up the RVE for this video, I did wonder how to proceed with my modelling, but looking at a recent paper on this (see description section of this video), I decided to use the hollow cylinder approach. In my view, it is a better approach as my modelling showed that you can capture the distortion of the cylinders during loading which is the representative mechanics of CNTs composites. Maybe somebody can rank the two methods, to see if there is a factual difference quantitatively... maybe inspiration for another video.

    @@MichaelOkereke excellent ! I was scrolling your articles and I have personal experiences with what I saw on there. I was an 11Bravo (Infantryman) in the US Army and I was last stationed at Ft Carson with 4ID, and it was a mechanized unit. Had a ton of experiences with Bradley’s UpArmored Humvees and we had tanks in my company also backing up us infantry. 4th Infantry is a massive fist of the Army’s mechanized divisions. I’m going to read through all of them and if you have any questions I could help with feel free to ask ! KGB
