Future Proofing Your Career

Future proofing your career especially in STEM fields is very important. New trendy fields and jobs pop up every few years and often the advice give is to run towards the new thing. This is usually one of the worst ideas as you get a shallow education as the field is new and you risk that field not being popular moving forward.
My advice is focus on the core skills or first principles. People think this means taking just a quick undergrad course or MOOC however this is far from what I mean. There are a lot of math, stats, and CS courses that focus on the fundamentals of areas you have never heard of. Really focusing in on the core skills will help you pick up new trendy topics much quicker. This whole idea is called "maturity."
Take a look at Thomas Garrity discussing mathematical maturity.

Every time I watch a new video of yours while working my boring finance job I get SO freaking excited to start my masters in stats this Fall. Ahhh thank you!! Going to study math stats on my lunch today instead of SAS bc of this!

Great advice, I couldn't agree more on the specialization part, also I wanna point out that Dimitri has such a clear vision on career development, I personally benefited from his advice when we spoke back in 2015, it was gracious of him to take the time, and it was a very valuable advice.

This is actually a pretty interesting story. I am soon graduating in mathematics, but I kind of have a weird mix of statistics, ML and quant finance in my CV

Excellent video. I've gone back to school for a Math Degree, and bouncing around in my mind about whether to do Data Science/Econ, or Stats as an Online masters after. I'm leaning towards Stats, and then maybe doing one of the others afterwards.

I have been modeling things for fun as a hobby for like 10 years without any real training except for books I read, writing programs, and using financial software. About to take my first rigorous applied stats class on it at a prestigious college to make decisions and predict things in the area of management science, finance, econometrics, and marketing. I love modeling and predicting stuff.

Hi, my background is CS and currently goind master of data science. I love pattern and machine learning, I have really low knowledge of quant and finance, how to I go to investment baking? The reason I want to go to investment banking because I heard it's challening and high paying, which I think would be fun. What skills do I need to hone and do you mind giving me details on what should I learned?

Hey Dmitri! To give you some background, I am a BS-MS student in pure math and minor in data science (from India). I have done projects on time series analysis, and readings on sustainable finance and passport options. I want to pursue a future in quant fin. I can't go for a MFE abroad because it's very expensive. As such do you recommend going for a PhD if possible, if I am hell bent on going into this interesting field.

I think that learning and retain the fundamentals of a subject is essential. I currently preparing my self to learn accounting and finance and its fundamental to get in to Finiancial Planning and Analysis (FP&A), related areas. But I'm having a bit of trouble doing so since I started to notice, like a year ago, that the university only teaches base learning of a subject, which is not enough for many industries. And so, I started to apply an advise that Dimitri shared, reading books. I'm currently reading the book "Principles of Managerial Finance" 16th edition from Chad J. Zutter and Scott B. Smart. Is that a great book for FP&A or there are better books?

Don’t go for accounting and finance. It ruined my life and career. I left engineering for chartered accountancy. Worst decision ever. Then Started bachelor of economics. Now currently enrolled in business analytics master, but again it is useless degree. After all these stupid things one thing want to tell everyone DON’T LEAVE STEM PROGRAMS. I’m now again changing my course I will go for pure Data science master or Master of Mathematics with Data science.

Dmitri, excellent video! I live in Brasil and study Economics. I want to have a career in Finance, but I'm worried that traditional finance is dying (Quant Finance in Brasil is fairly new but is bound to be huge). Even though I've an interest in Data Science and can program in a basic level, I've never been the most capable person in terms of mathematical thinking. When you speak about the fundamentals in Math and Stats, what do you mean exactly? How should I approach learning them? (PS: I'm 23)

Understand the fundamentals and find the parts that interest you. Building the skills builds maturity allowing you to connect dots extremely quickly. Build first principle skills

Good content as usual, btw KZread unsubscribed me without me noticing. Anyways, random question, I currently study math/stats and will be entering an Applied Mathematics masters next year taking the Applied Stats & Financial Mathematics track. As an applied math student I still have to take at least 2 courses from the Differential Equations/Optimization track as a requirement. I'd like the course to be somewhat relevant to QF, specifically risk management. In your experience working in quantitative risk, would applied numerical analysis and applied partial differential equations be somewhat useful? These are the two courses from the DE/Optimization track I am considering in addition to my stats/fin math courses. The rest of them get deep off into perturbation analysis, linear/nonlinear programming, integral transformations etc. So, of all of them I felt these two may be the most useful in quant finance.

Very good video thank you Man, I have a question for you , I graduated with a bachelor degree in CS and now working as a software developer , I’m interested in Finance but don’t want to do a MFE or MFin , will rather do a MSc in software engineering and study the CFA material on the side , maybe an MBA later on .. is this a good plan ? Thanks

Contrary to popular belief now I think there’s a huge existential, regulatory, and political risk to a career in the crypto industry
