Nice episode. Worth noting too that eArc has the audio benefit of automatic lip sync built in *if* all components use HDMI 2.1 This is not mentioned enough by any publication imo. Anyone who’s tried getting a perfect lip-sync manually will find this a very attractive feature. Edited to add: Worth noting that HDMI was also not included in Naims new ultra modern has-every-other-connection Naim NSC 222, while the older and much cheaper Unitis do.

If I hadn't just bought a pair of Wharfedale Elysian 4s I would have been sooo tempted by those Coriniums in racing green. My very first floorstanders were from AE and my son still uses them nearly 30 years later, so I have a soft spot for the company.

I appreciate that you are always beating the HDMI ARC drum John, I find it insane how few hifi products have embraced it. My favorite HDMI implementation I have used was with he NAD M33, but ultimately it was not the right amp for my speakers. Very excited for NAD M66 for this reason as other sources HDMI ARC implementations I have tried have left a lot to be desired.

I’ve just changed to a TV and active speakers set up. For now, I’m just using a cheap HDMI extender dac with pass through, from Amazon, to convert to phono and still enables me to use the TV for volume control to my beolab 8000s. Like you I think HDMI arc is now essential for an amp with dac it works great and makes sense. As a B&O fan, this is a concept they have used for years, as in the TV being the central part of a set up. Enjoy the channel, I’m also a electo music fan

Smart active speakers (KEF LS50/60, Dali Oberon 2C, Acoustic Energy AE1 etc) are here to stay and will occupy a massive segment of the HiFi market in the near future. Not only they provide incredible convenience in a room’s setup but IMHO an audio architectural philosophy that can prove if not better at least equally good to the passive equivalent solutions. The amp is chosen, configured and voiced based on the audio characteristics of the company and how they FEEEL that speaker should optimally perform. A perfect example is the FORMATION DUOS (hope you review them one day). They are phenomenal speakers and what B&W has achieved is a complete audiophile orgasmic solution that has absolutely nothing to be jealous of when going against any other passive option at that price bracket, and even beyond.

One word of caution is that you MAY find that it doesn’t sound as good as with a dedicated Pre/Power setup. I tried this with my CXN v2 acting as a digital Pre into my integrated amp (with HT bypass) and it didn’t sound as good dynamically. However, the convenience of volume control via the app was great.

I completely agree John. I was looking at the new Arcam offerings and was surprised they didn't have HDMI ARC. I am currently in the market for an integrated amp that can perform dual duty for both music and TV while allowing me to use a single remote for both. This is for a secondary system so convenience is a priority for me.

On one HDTV setup, I use a Blusound Node X with Dynaudio LYD8s paired with a 9s subwoofer. It sounds fantastic, with hdmi ARC passthrough my TV to the Node, with no lag. Oh my 2nd TV, I use the regular Blusound Node with hdmi ARC also, to toslink out to my wireless Dynaudio Xeo 30s, to get rid of bluetooth lag. It's a pure digital setup and 24 bit lossless is more than adequate. These were a bit expensive for my budget, but much less than other options.

Hi John, I'm going to renovate my house. As that will cost a bit, I wonder: at first I'm going for a relatively cheap audio system so that I can save money to buy a big audiosystem lateron. For this built I'd like wall, speaker outlets, what kind of outlets would you go for as I don't know what kind of system I'm going to buy lateron? Would you go for an RCA connection or just copper wire connection (not sure what those are called)? Also, would you go old school Denon, Marantz, Pioneer or similar or JBL or a similar new brand if your ultimate goal is 9.1.2 Atmos? (Maybe an obvious answer as Atmos didn't exist back in the days)

Looking forward to that Marantz Stereo 70s review! I'm a plasma die-hard which means I can't run all my HDMI video sources (4) to my TV so I need the HDMI source management of an AV receiver but run 2 channel audio exclusively. 95% of the time I use my main system for audio and care most about the audio quality. I definitely think there's a market for an "audio-first" Stereo Receiver. I've been there done that with surround sound - for me it's too much. I would be interested in a comparison of the Stereo 70 to the Rotel A11.

Always run HDMI, like an Apple TV, to your HDMI AVR a different HDMI cable from TV to AVR. Usually there is an HDMI TV input. So HDMI switching is done by the AVR. Not the TV. This is preferred.

u-BACCH from BACCH Labs intro pricing at $400 is ending this month actually, and being raised much closer to $1000 additionally the one directly from BACCH is a true audio plugin, so you can only stream audio from a DAW or media player that supports VSTs on a PC/Mac, while the dutch & dutch integration is direct streaming only (spotify connect, roon) and simply switches right on. So they actually complement each other / you can pick which makes the most sense for your use case (studio or streaming)

I think this nationalistic way of thinking is a bit shortsighted and false sentiment. Because, think globaly: Aren't the workers in other (poorer) parts of the world worthy of jobs and making a living? Aren't the materials and parts used for the products produced and imported from elsewhere? Aren't the workers in the UK or USA often migrants from elsewhere? Aren't the products produced in lower salary countries cheaper and therefor more affordable to more of us locals? Aren't the profits going to the stockholders, who could be anyone and who might be living anywhere, and might be spending those profits everywhere around the globe? Aren't we all entitled to buy stock/shares of foreign companies and let their profit flow to us 'locals'? What does 'think global' mean in Srajan's idea, when it comes down to (high-end) audio-equipment? There 're few good reasons to buy certain localy produced products/produces (like localy produced/grown food) and serviced, and that has to do with logistics and transport and the carbon emissions that it causes, and to support a local shop/entrepreneur/farmer/service to stay open. Srajan is a nice man and knowledgeable about audio, but also resembles the typical Selbstgeschtrickte, New Age / Spiritual / Alternative / Natur Heilpraxis type a bit, with some unscientific ideas and ideologies. As long as Srajan doesn't start preaching these ideas it's okay, but Darko should maybe watch out to not let this item turn into a Darko & Dorko podcast. ;)

I agree: according to the principle "think globaly - act localy", not only the returns on invested capital (-> dividends, capital gains) but also the returns on other production factors such as wages and rents should be taken into account.

  • @Wuppie62

    @Wuppie62

    8 ай бұрын

@@thomaswalter216 Sure, but if your locally manufactured products are more expensive because of higher costs, you won't sell and/or export them as much..only locally, to those who can afford them. A local economy should focus on doing (and selling) the things it does best and better than other's, to create added value. I.e. the Wharfedale Linton and Denton speakers are designed by a British designer, manufactured in China, and sold worldwide. The same speakers manufactured in Britain would cost the customer way more, and despite carrying a sticker that says 'Manufactured in Britain' instead of 'Designed in Britain' sell in lower quantities and be found in less living rooms in- and outside the UK...

The HDMI eARC is a multi -channel running all Dolby features to 7.1 or 9.2 setups. It's an invention Audio engineers miss to leave out of DACs and Music streamers. If they make a DAC Streamer with e Arc connection it can connect to a AV receiver to play Awesome HiFi in not 2 but tons of speakers at the same time filling the room with music. Makes sense?

I use the mark 1 version for my home studio. Size was a major deciding factor but of all the studio reference monitors I auditioned in the price range these stood heads above everything else; I auditioned Adam, Dynacord, Focal, and a few others ‘in studio’ because the shop I go to allowed home testing for a few days during the pandemic. As a dedicated audiophile who also happens to be a mastering/recording engineer, I’ve mentioned Neumann in commends on your KZread channel a few times though you’ve likely not seen them. What I REALLY want to see is an audiophile reviewer like yourself audition and review the recently released KH150 speakers, which are also DSP active speakers, in the middle size, so perfectly sized larger bookshelf or even stand mount. Not cheap, but seeing them compared to other similar sized higher end speakers that are marketed to the audiophile community vs the studio community would be interesting/fascinating.

Regarding the reason why one would want hdmi arc instead of optical or coax, is the mandatory automatic lip sync feature which is required for eARC. It is important if you have an especially large screen or projector like I have where you can notice a 10ms delay immediately. It is not something you can fix with a fixed audio delay in the tv settings because some content buffers longer than others and in the case of Apple TV (which is fantastic quality) has variable frame rate which introduces more lip sync delay variability.

Great discussion with Srajan! Very informative and illuminating about the future. I thoroughly agree with the “think globally, act locally” mentality, and I’m sure Mr Darko must’ve heard it before. But I really am surprised Srajan has never actually listened to a binaural recording. But his experience with 3D movies kind of explains why. If it makes you I’ll, it’s not your thing. I personally love everything 3D, have a bunch of stereopticon cards (that I can view without a stereoscope) and 3D blurays along with a VR headset and several binaural recordings. Gottta say, binaural recordings used to wow me, but lately, not so much. In my 20s, way back when, binaural over my cheap headphones was much more convincing than it is now. Maybe it’s the cheap headphones.

Srajan's comments about the headphone vs. speaker dutch and dutch should be compared to a feature in the RME ADI-2 DAC FS in which you can add audio from the opposite channel into each of the channels--making your headphones sound more like real-world acoustics listening to speakers. This is one of the many features making the RME much more than a DAC.

I am looking at Naim Uniti Atom (currently heavily discounted), Marantz 40n (currently 20% off with trade in), Stereo70 (nobody has one here yet) Yamaha RA1000n (sadly the 2000 is just physically too big), and NAD M10 V2 or C399 with BluOs and Dirac. Can't bloody decide!!!! Speakers are Larsen 4.3s.

I guess I'm halfway between separates and powered speakers - with a NAD M10 + B&W passive speakers (the best sounding, to my ears, I could audition 😂). I'm getting old, so I know my hearing with degrade as I get even older - so will probably stick with this setup until ... I do like the audio quality of your videos - particularly the 'background ' music - what a surprise 😁.

I understand what Marantz is doing. Since the digital side is upgrading often and if you're worried about upgrade costs, the analog side's technology isn't changing as fast so you only have to pay for the digital portion.

There are many powered and active speakers that do not work with video sources (poor latency). I do not know if HDMI and HDMI ARC/eARC are the future direction. Some years ago I was keen to buy into surround sound and pre-amplifiers that switched S-video between VCR and DVD players. That was very short lived. Computers are going the display port and Thunderbolt route and although that is a converting cable (DP one end HDMI the other) standards are still changing. In wireless all things are not equal with many leading brands doing their own thing - B&W Formation, Dali wireless active speakers and Kef (which do not scale to surround). WiSA may be too limited, as Dali believe and is not a plug and play as some owners of Buchardt and B&O can't get them to work together. Having tired the same 16/44 CD quality file played over Bluetooth, Airplay 2, wi-fi (Google chrome cast) and WiSA the difference surprized me and immediately showed Bluetooth is so far behind the other methods. May be it is less noticed in other speakers. The other very noticeable thing with audiophile is how expensive they are with price increases above inflation making barely afford models now for the super rich.

With the Marantz cdn you can use the remote cable between it and the amp to pass volume control. In theory if you use hdmi arc with the cd player, volume commands should transfer to the 50 or what ever marantz amp you use with it. The cdn shouldn't have to attenuate volume internally.

Marantz's integrated amps of late definitely have lots of options available for inputs and outputs. I have the Model30 and could not be happier with so many analog inputs and outputs (Heck, one of its outputs is an input to my all tube SET amp !).... I keep my HiFi independent of my A/V system so the lack of HDMI-ARC on my SACD30n is not an issue.

He makes some interesting points about keeping money local, but when I’m spending that much money, I’m gonna spend it on who deserves it, and that’s the company that produces the equipment that sounds the best to me. I’m not going to settle for a purchase that I’m going to regret because I didn’t buy what I liked the most intentionally. That’s just ridiculous.

Binaural audio is the lifeblood of VR/AR immersion as far as the aural sensory side of things goes. When it works, it works wonders, but the challenges become apparent immediately when trying to craft a broadly applicable DSP that accurately represents the world as “heard” by some subset deemed a majority. The reason? Everyone is quite literally so damn unique :). All the different, diverse pieces and parts of our anatomies that play a role in shaping the final thing we internalize as sound - from twists of ear canals and the cilia lining them to the booming resonances manufactured in our chest cavities and the years we’ve subconsciously spent distinguishing between the peaks and modes deemed internal versus those generated from our surroundings - are quite literally as unique as fingerprints. This idiosyncratic, physiological black box of processing each of our bodies performs can be thought of as a programmatic function called by our brains at even the tiniest of audible sensory inputs with the singular goal to produce as its output an answer to that all important human question: what the hell that noise was coming from that bush over there and should I fight it or should I flee? In other words, when given an audible input, our brains combine that input with its many transformed versions bouncing around our sklls and necks and jaws and on and on, and produce an output that we label reality. In engineering, the idea of a black box that takes an input, does something to that input, and gives back an output is referred to as a transfer function. So then it makes perfect sense that this one is called the HRTF or Head-Related Transfer Function (HRTF). I’ve always thought it would be cool to have the digital version of my own HRTF, but the one time I heard of being able to commission such a thing was by someone named Darren Fong who ran this awesome project called Out Of Your Head. He was down in Southern California I believe and from the legend I’ve heard (ie - probably misremembering but we forge on) you could pay him some nominal fee and as long as you were willing to travel to him, he would create a custom HRTF of your noggin.

Hey John, love your channel, your approach to hi-fi and your music taste! Re: Arcam, their current top integrated (the SA30) does have HDMI-ARC, as well as a streamer AND Dirac Live, combined with 120 watts in class G. It's a beast, and I'm actually surprised you haven't reviewed it so far (even though that's probably Arcam's fault more than it is yours). So the A25 is placed below the SA30 in the hierarchy (and it's admittedly cheaper albeit much better looking), maybe there's an A35 in the works or they chose not to mess with their top model yet.

I literally commented yesterday about a aluminium speaker box that had bearings under it. ( I think you reviewed them too John ) The reviewer commented that they could hear some high frequency that they thought was the bearings reacting with the metal box....🤔 And i thought why not hang the speakers by cord? 🤷‍♂️ I have gongs that hang suspended in a metal frame. Anyway, I thought it was a interesting coincidence considering what you ended with 😉

Aren't Fyne audio still a UK owned company. A breakaway company set up by former Tannoy employees. To find any companies that produce products in the UK and are UK owned is rare in the extreme. British racing green is also my favourite colour. I may be a little influenced by the fact that BRM who used this colour on their early cars were built in the town where I lived. I own garrard, tannoy and marantz products. The garrard and tannoys were UK built. Many years ago of course.

AE becomes unaffordable. The only reason not to sell online is to keep prices high. HI-FI is now getting silly prices for many. I struggle to keep up with the never-ending price increases while pay flatlines while we are in a cost of living crises. Constant bigger cuts for dealers. There is no recession when it comes to Hi-FI prices. Greed. I hope the greedy companies go out of business. I don't see any reasonable priced products now. A £300 product from the 2000 is now £3000. Prices double on a whim.

A bit of an exaggeration there Michael? I bought an amp for £2500 in 2010, the new version in 2023 is £3500 - except you can buy it for £2999 or similar. You couldn't really buy a serious amp for £300 in 2000. Otherwise I agree a lot of hifi gear is overpriced. Especially various bits and bobs, supports etc. Fancy a fuse for £6000? Give FutureShop a ring!

@razisn Another effect many of the hi-fi companies are owned by a few companies. Lack of competition in the market. Far Eastern companies buying up Hi-Fi owning a dozen difference companies. Yet when it comes to retail, and here in the UK contracts that stop online sells, every retailer has to advertise at the same price. Lack of true competition in the market. The Hi-Fi industry lobbied to be made a special case of and be exempt from normal competition laws and be able to use restrictive sells practices that keep prices high.

But I really enjoy what you do, and I always fancy the albums that you feature in your videos. There is no but... But ! If I may, there is something that it's always missing in this ecosystem (audiophiles and co). Nobody seems to take energy, efficiency, economy of power as an topic. I think it is. It should be if not the one at least one of the metrics for reviewing a system or a device. Is it more or less energy efficient then an other ? It's a ever missing animal of this game. Thank you for all your videos ! Best regards, Eugenio
