FUSE BLOCKS VS CIRCUIT BREAKERS, WITH JP!
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Making sure your equipment is protected from heat and surges is crucial for amplifier lifespan. The importance of fuses and circuit breakers can't be stressed enough. Although one seems more likely to be the industry standard, both can play key roles in managing power and performance in your system.
In this video, JP gives us the rundown on both fuses and circuit breakers. Let us know in the comments which team are you? Are you Team No Fuse, Team Fuse Block or Team Circuit Breaker. Give us your feedback on both, we'd love to hear from you!

@@wal ok I'm patiently waiting lol. Anyway you can test that 83 at the normal 14.4v and do one that's like 15.3-15.5 v at 1ohm and see what she can do with that strong of an electrical system?? Either way thanks for your work broham💪💪👊
I use both. Fuses in the back before and after batt, and breaker in the front under the hood. It is convenient for jump starting other vehicles because I prefer to isolate the rear from the front
I run 3-300 amp fuse holders under the hood and 2 Stinger 300 amp circuit breakers in the rear. I use the rear circuit breakers as a battery isolator. I also like them cuz it's easy to just flip the switch when I have a mechanic working on my car. Then he will only have to disconnect the front battery and not mess with anything in the rear.
I’ve ran circuit breakers for yrs and have NEVER had an issue. Made sure that I always had the correct amperage breakers mounted 6 inches from the front battery going to the rear battery. Then 6 inches from the rear batteries to the fuse block for the amps. Current setup is all deaf bonce clamping about 9200 watts. Never can have too much protection.

Plus circuit breakers are way faster at tripping in an overload situation like a voltage regulator failing or something. It'll protect your equipment better.

Same. I’ve had to replace mine ONE time…. Dropped to 9.6 volts… bought a new one, right back up to 14.4V #welegends
JP if you stock breakers that will hold 1/0 wire without having to butcher the rings to fit and range in 100-300amp range I bet you'd sell a bunch. Hell make some that allow ya to just insert the wire with a ferrel instead of using a ring terminal and those would fly off the shelf too.

I've seen The Soundman Doug Bernards use a circuit breaker in one of his vehicles.
You should bring in heavy duty circuit breaker’s I had been using circuit breaker’s but changed to fuses because I don’t think 350 amp breaker’s rating was correct, keep popping when I would turn my Orion 8k up , and not full power either, had 2 in parallel that should have been good for 700 amps but they would pop after a few minutes of running it hard , but not full tilt like 5 db down from max SPL, I switched to fuse’s and no problem but they take up a lot of room and scare me when you put them in ⚡️

I'm having that same issue.... 2 taramps smart 3 bass monoblocks on 2 resilient sounds platinum 12's... put a 300amp breaker on each and they pop out when we start to crank.... actually can even crank because the dam breakers keep popping out lol. Changing them to regular anl fuses in the next couple days.
I myself am running circuit breaker, battery isolator and a fuse block between my AGM battery and the D4S LTO with a 500 farad cap bank in my setup. Not to mention a relay with a strip to have the soft turn on for my amplifiers.

No need for cap if you have a second battery and a isolator
I’m running a circuit breaker in my Subaru under the hood at 300amp on my all of my amps and accessories that’s been relocated to battery number 2 of my car off of a 3 post charging isolator. Also, I have a 300amp fuse before my battery inside my car, (and of course, every accessory is fused as well). So I’m in the middle…. Sorry for skewing the vote. I have a mix. Any questions why, ask away!!!
Circuit Breaker - 300-Amp Stinger 1/0 connections
I love you circuit breakers for many years and right now I have 2K RMS SFB sundown amp with the 400 amp circuit breaker n I haven't popped it yet n it makes it easier to switch of n on when you are not using the amp n sub all the time so love circuit breakers
I’m running a combination of fuse blocks and circuit breakers with my new build. Circuit breaker under the hood and a distribution fuse block back by the amplifiers.
Team fuse holder from day one. I have had many “versions” over the years. But smd protects my jp amps
I'm definitely been running circuit breakers and I got fuse blocks so I use both
I use circuit breakers in my system. 250 amp for the subs, and 159 amp for the miss and highs….but recently I had a problem with the 150 amp, it was causing the mids and highs to cut in and out and caused some static. Apparently the connection inside the unit was making intermittent contact. I replaced it and it works right again, maybe they can’t handle vibrations as well as fuse holders, just something to think about.
Yes, circuit breakers can be applied to eliminate the flow of electricity due to a short. However, the fuse block can massively obtain a higher voltage recommended for increased electrical frequencies. Depending on the audio setup will determine how you want to conduct a solid audio system.
Team fuse holder, I like my car lmao
i'm running 2 fuse blocks for my JP23 v 1.5 that running my 2 12' audio pipe 1100 RMS each and i have popped a 100amp fuse but now i'm the SMD 600 amp with my fuse blocks now and after upgrading my fuse's i have not popped any more and now i can run the JP23 v 1.5 at full power and with my sub's they hit harder now that i can running my amp at full power.. and i'm running 2 fuse blocks for my JP83 4 channel and with the upgraded fuse i can run it at full power now and my mids and highs sound so good and louder.. im but the best when it comes to car audio but after watching tons of videos and alot of the D4S videos and going to my local car auto shop miami pro audio here in jacksonville F.L i have learn so much and still learn more and more each day about it.... i have just got about all of my car audio stuff from D4S beside my subs and i will soon my upgrade my sub to some sundown audio subs from D4S i couldn't ask for a better car audio dealer then D4S.....
Hello, i have 1 amp at 1k watt rms mono d and 1 amp at 480 watt rms a/b. What size main fuse do i need and and can i run the individual fuses next to the amps?
I can't believe i met J.P Down 4 Sounds today at Car Tunes in Muscle shoals alabama he is a really cool man. Its was Pleasure meeting you
I use circuit breakers inline to my two 4 ch amps. I trip them both when I’m doing burps to my subs to prevent burning up mids and highs.
Dual SMD fuse blocks
Fuses all day, better selection of amperage limits...
I've used both. But never run without protection. I watched a cousins trans am nearly burn up due to no fusing. Also used isolator for single amp system to keep audio on rear batteries only.
I run both but I do prefer circuit breakers due to the ease of cutting off power when its time to swap amplifiers. I run 100 & 300a breakers. MR JP if you sellum I'll buy um. and they have different styles too just like fuse holders.
One pro on circuit breakers is they will typical trip faster during a fault. So if you have a 100 amp breaker and you send 110 amps of current through it continuously for 10 seconds it will trip rather easily. Where as using a 100 amp fuse you will have to send sometimes 150+ amps off current through it continuously for 30+ seconds before it heats up enough to blow it. One huge con of circuit breakers in any field (marine, motorcycle, car audio, and even home electrical) is that they become weaker every time they trip. So for an example if you have a 100 amp breaker and it trips occasionally because you're just pulling slightly too much current through it the next time it trips it may trip at 95 amps and 90 amps the time after that, and so on limiting the amount of current it can handle. Even manually turning them on/off a bunch of times without tripping them can cause wear and make them weaker. However I do know that this issue has been some what addressed in residential/commercial electrical however the circuit breakers used in car audio haven't been changed/updated in the last 20+ years.
Well started with holders and 500 amp fuses my trunk two are great under the hood kept melting from the heat in the engine bay only on 3k so tried a 300 breaker very happy they do work somebody make 500s I'd buy some
Both, run stinger 300amp circuit breakers on main runs back and to distribution blocks. Then fuses close to amp. Main reason to use circuit breakers is for easy disconnect and if need to work on this system is it easy way to remove power
Are used a ANL use for the main battery and two circuit breakers in between batts for the amp and second battery with an isolator , breakers were more likely to trip with heat in the engine bay so that was the reason why I use the ANL fuse
Not sure if I commented already, but I'm running the exact same circuit breaker. I haven't had any issues its easy to turn off. if I want to change something. No stupid plastic cover or bolts and Fuse to remove. And fireworks when I connect anything. My main battery in my car is also in the boot if I had to run wiring to the engine bay I probably would add a fuse over a breaker
Ive used both. Up to 300 amp circuit breakers for smaller systems. But for the monsters i use fuse blocks. Mainly bc they don't make anything bigger than a 300 amp circuit breaker. My opinion, circuit breakers are better bc, absolutely nothing has a chance to heat up long enough, to catch on fire. Verses a fuse. Especially a high amperage fuse. Secondly, you blow a set of 350 amp fuses or a 500 ect. You won't find one at a parts store or Walmart. And if it's after hours you're still screwed lol. So if strong enough, tested, quality breakers were built i think people would turn towards them. Ive personally tested fuses against circuit breakers. You would be surprised on how much damage a fuse allows b4 it blows. Verses a circuit breaker on which cuts current upon any sign of a short. Basically less app to have your car burn to the ground, and if an amp goes it won't sit there and cook. Think of it like a gfi circuit in your house. You want to see a difference. Do a small test. Battery out of a car of course. Touch a power to a grounded out piece of metal. 1 with a fuse, one with a circuit breaker. Test biggest circuit breaker against same size fuse. Then look at the damage from the initial arc. Secondly, larger fuses will take accidental touches and not blow. Circuit breaker is kinda like a gfi. It will throw instantly. Last its little more cost effective, and easier to cut power when work needs to be done.
Yo JP I think you should take this chance to engineer a bad ass line of circuit breakers with higher amp loads 💪💪👊

Y’all are just brand whores. Geezzz. There are already enough companies that make circuit breakers. Excuse me, several companies that put a name on it. They are all made in China anyway.
I would like to try circuit breaker. But for now Fuse Block. Cheers!
I've used everything, but circuit breakers are my preference. Simple easy to use, quick disconnect(no tools required) when you need to disconnect power.
Converted from fuses (from battery’s to circuit breaker’s) still use micro anl for speaker amp breaker for rear batt to sub.
Breaker with the cumulative draw within 12"-18" of the battery (+) AND (-) since I always run 1/0 gauge to the amp rack for both the hot and grounds (instead of localized chasis grounds) inline or fused blocks near the amp (+ inputs only). I like to be able to disingage the breaker if and when I need to change something out at the amp rack end of things. Click the breaker off, disingage the amp, cap or whatever is in line, wire back up, click back on. Easy peasy and no sparks!
I have that same fuse that you've just shown but I'm going to put a circuit breaker exactly like that square when you showed
Circuit breakers react way faster than fuses do in overload situations (not ground faults they would be the same for that I think). Especially in high current applications where it can take a bit (relatively) to heat up that big fuse and break it. This can protect your equipment in the event of a regulator failing or any kind of overload that might happen. It shouldn't be hard to find breakers that would work for high amperage car audio stuff either. You could look for higher voltage stuff even that has the overall current requirements you need. A 48v 5 amp breaker will take a lot more amps at 12v to pop for example. Don't ask me for the equations you can Google them lol

@@62dobie other than that particular breaker overheating why? A good breaker shouldn't do that. Plus it was able to hang out at 95 percent load where the fuses failed or in the case of the one fuse it failed the other way. Also if you're planning any kind of electrical system you shouldn't be looking at the fuse/breaker that will just barely make it. If you're gonna be regularly pulling a constant 95 amps a 100 amp fuse or breaker is too small anyways.
@62dobie
2 жыл бұрын
@@adamtheninjasmith2985, most breakers don't break at load. They go way past the specific load. If you research them, you'll find fuses are more reliable in car applications. Home is different. This is why car makers don't build most cars with breakers. You need them to do what they do at the load asked from them. Otherwise, you risk car BBQ.

@@62dobie wow I guess that's why we should use quality stuff I guess. Don't forget that video you referenced showed a breaker tripping at a pretty respectable 100.9 amps while showcasing a fuse that handled well over 250 amps... Not throwing shade I just don't think that video is a good representation for your argument. My experience with breakers and whatnot is more shop and home oriented though. 240/120v. But this also makes me curious because there's a reason we switched from fuse boxes to breaker boxes in that theme too. Granted that was shitty wiring heating up before the fuse blew and not so great manufacturing and whatnot back in the day maybe.
I use both.
I run both circuit breaker for my 4 Chanel and a fuse block for my sub amp
I like circuit breakers because they make working on everything a bit easier. Just sucks that once they pop, it doesn't take much for them to keep popping.

I spent over 30 years in aviation maintenance and mostly electrical and electronics. I figure that if it's good enough for multi-million dollar helicopters and airplanes, then it's good enough for my Jeep. I am designing my system with FAA quality circuit breakers.

Like for fuses.
Team fuse holder. My ISSUE IS THAT MY FUSE BLOCK KEEPS MELTING! This has happened about ten times. I HAVE 0 GUAGE CCA WIRE AND THE PART FROM THE FUSE BLOCK RUNNING AWAY FROM MY BATTER TOWARDS MY AMP KEEPS MELTING ! It melts and the rubber/insulation gets inbetween the wire and it shorts. Also the plastic on my fuse block and fuse block holder melt! Bad! And crack! I have a really good Kenetic batter. All the parts (big3 upgrade) are in tip top shape. Ground connection good .. idk what the problem is . I honestly think it’s the heat from the engine in addition to the audio accessories and components already getting warm from usage that it is just too much …. I have 2 15 KICKER COMPQ Hifonics Brutus (35yr anniversar )35000 amp and then morel speakers (4) and a motel amp for those
Interesting that there's a 'team NO fuse'.. 😮 Sounds.. suspenseful..?.. 🤔
Can't you put more amps through a circuit breaker than a fuse?
Fuse block all day, why play. Circuit breaker, was the more expensive and or professional way in my old group of audio friends. But we couldn't afford it. The shop I go my stuff from had a demo Shelby kit car. Was very kool

Team fuse
I'm running 2 -600 fuse for 2 12k Taramp amp at half ohm stable

I mostly definitely use fuse holder
I was always told not to use just a breaker because if the breaker doesn't kick your car will catch fire. They do have hi amp ones but there not cheap I don't think people can justify the price of a high amp breaker. I run both fuse at engine battery and breaker at amplifier with a fire extinguisher in center console just in case breaker fales and fuse doesn't kick in time.
Team no fuse...🤷♂️ but I don't like the circuit breakers we run the 300A like the you showed here and they work good and last a long time even in the weather they last
Circuit breaker.
Fuse holder ....a breaker can be faulty from the factory and it may not be necessarily bad but not actually going to the amperage it is supposed to hold until it trips but with q fuse you can visually look and tell if it looks different from other fuses of same size or it has a factory default ....where with a breaker you would need to run a metered test ....plus it has been the norm in car audio for decades if not since the beginning....must be something about it for companies that have been in car audio for many years not to change because if a circuit breaker was better way they would be using them and or advising consumers to use them but no they all suggest a fuse block or terminal....just saying ....I am wrong a lot so you do qs you please but I am going to listen to what the companies that have stood the test of time in the car audio industry suggest ....it's worked pretty dang well so far ....and as for no fuse .....ever see a show car burn to the ground because of a wire getting to hot....no fuse wrong fuse size etc. I watched a grand national with 11 thousand original mile burn to the ground at a red light because of this ....sad it was
Team fuse block, bout to swap to circuit breakers tho
