Fury over British classic comedy Hi-de-Hi! trigger warning

Classic 1980s sitcom Hi-de-Hi! has been slapped with a new trigger warning.
Viewers who choose to watch the show will now be met with a message warning of 'language and attitudes of the era that may offend.'
Other classic shows such as 'Allo 'All, One Foot in the Grave and Fawlty Towers have been given similar warning.
Speaking to comedian Luke Stephens Ian Collins criticised the decision to place a trigger warning on the classic British comedies.
"We've arrived in the world of absolutely topsy-turvy nonsense, good lord."

Not just you. My daughter is currently awaiting delivery from Amazon of: On the Buses, Are You Being Served, It Ain't Half Hot Mum, Porridge, all of the Carry On's, Benny Hill, & Bless This House (among others). All of which should probably carry warnings for the modern generation who seem unable to appreciate that 40-50 years ago humour was genuinely funny and not just slapstick. And my daughter is just out of the generation (she is 30) who seem unable to appreciate the 'old but definitely hilarious' comedies of the past. She finds them totally hilarious and, by watching them on KZread, is fairly word perfect on many of them already. I foresee hours and hours of old comedies being played in this household.

But it’s not as if anyone is holding a gun to their head and saying YOU WILL WATCH THIS SHOW, AND YOU WILL FIND IT HYSTERICAL. These people have a choice to watch a program. Faulty Towers was another that I personally have never found amusing. There is the odd funny part but to me it is far too slapstick in general, very obvious comedy which is more in the vein of many/most US comedies then and now. No real double entendres which are the backbone of most genuinely funny comedies. The ones that can be watched by children who appreciate the obvious and then still enjoyed by them as they grow up and start to get the double meanings to much of what is said (the Carry On series are masters at this as was Allo Allo) so they realise there was/is an entire new layer to what they are watching they couldn't appreciate as children. That is true comedy but nowadays something you seldom find.

  • @ScottyBugler2005

@@musicandbooklover-p2obut the comedy in Fawlty Towers is really the fact that Basil Fawlty is trying his best to run the hotel, but it seems that everything goes wrong for him. He’s a hen pecked husband with a wife who doesn’t really seem to lift a finger to help him. And then there’s Manuel....... It’d be quicker to train a monkey 😂 Polly isn’t that much better either. Better than Manuel, but that’s not saying much. And also a lot of the comedy is in the situations in which Basil finds himself. I’m pretty sure Basil probably suffers from high blood pressure and likely would’ve eventually died from a heart attack if he’d carried on. That’s why there was only two seasons and 6 episodes each per season. Surely John Cleese was giving himself high blood pressure just from being so irate all the time as Basil.

@@ScottyBugler2005 Basically a US sitcom then because that seems to be the main story behind most of them. I don't find them funny either and the same applies to Faulty Towers. The other one was the Alf Garnet one, seen a few episodes of that over the years and it didn't really appeal to me either, or The Young Ones (though my husband loves that series) as again, so obvious and slap stick it's simply not funny. But if we all liked the same shows then most would never been shown. I know they are popular - same with Charlie Chaplin or Abbott and Costello or Laurel and Hardy, I simply don't find them funny but somehow Benny Hill is hilarious though much of his comedy was also slap-stick but it was done in an incredibly clever way relying on more than just actions to be humourous.

It was the 80's before foreigners were noticeable in Edinburgh. I have no objection to people coming, but why must we give up our Nationality, culture and sense of humour because they don't like it? I guarantee it's not indigenous Brits complaining. What is the point of having different countries if you can claim a nationality just by living there? We are what our DNA says we are regardless of where we live, and why are foreigners so willing to give up their heritage and Nationality for ours? I am an Edinburgh native. I can trace my ancestry beyond my 5th G grandfather who was Dean of Edinburgh University (William Robertson D.D.) One side of the family can be traced to 1592 to Edinburgh. I am in my early 60s and have watched every one of these series. Never ever been offended, even when fun is poked at the Irish, of whom I am one. We need to take ourselves less seriously, comedy that takes the mick is just the best. When I think about an Irish example I think of the builder O'Reilly in Fawlty Towers. Flipping hilarious, he was your clichéd Irish builder, slippery character, dodgy workmanship, no sense of urgency. I dont know any Irish friends who found it offensive, it was done well and just so funny. John Cleese, a great fan of ireland, poked as much fun at the English as he did at the Irish, Spanish, germans etc.

I find it very sad that the ability to laugh at yourself and others is being made taboo. On the other hand, I’m very broad minded but I wince at their favourite programme, Love Island.

I love Hi De Hi. There was such a great ensemble of characters in that show. Mr Partridge was brilliant. A fallen vaudeville entertainer who had to take on a job at a holiday camp entertaining children doing Punch and Judy and he didn’t like children. And when he was drunk it was hilarious. The one where he’s on the beach and he’s got a banana in one hand and a bottle of whiskey in the other and he sees what he thinks is a horse being ridden by another horse. And he looks at the banana and whiskey and then throws the banana over his shoulder and chugs down the whiskey. And when he’s drunk he also does a rude version of Jerusalem apparently. And starts talking like Mr Punch, and you can only reason with him if you try speaking to him in Judy’s voice. 😂
