'Fury and confusion' as another Tory MP defects to Labour | LBC analysis

Natalie Elphicke, the Conservative MP for Dover and Deal, has defected to the Labour Party, hitting out at the "broken promises of Rishi Sunak's tired and chaotic government".
She said: "I have carefully considered this decision. The change has been dramatic and cannot be ignored.
"For me key deciding factors have been housing and the safety and security of our borders."
Following her announcement, Sir Keir Starmer "warmly welcomed" the Dover MP to the benches.
Tom Swarbrick and LBC’s political editor Natasha Clark analyse the fallout.

Absolutely agree. Sometimes things are ‘political movers and shakers playing 4D chess.’ Sometimes it’s just someone resigning in a huff because they hate their boss. And a rival company hiring them to stick the boot in.

Yup, she’s moved out of spite and Starmer’s accepted it since she’s not standing in the next election so this is just a cost free way to remove one vote from the Tories and add one to Labour even if she is insufferable for a few months. It’s not complicated.

@@chrispayne9158She doesn't have a choice... Labour already have their candidates and have said she won't be able to replace them. She'd have to run for a different party, which would make this move make no sense. If she was a career politician then she would have made a deal to defect to Reform and stand for them at the next election - having grown up near Dover, that's certainly the kind of place they could do well in. While I've spent so much of my life decrying the indifference people have to politics, I now find the unashamed ignorance to be far more annoying. You didn't bother to look into this at all before making your aggressive pronouncements, and even when confronted you still refuse to do so. The rejection of truth commonly found on the Right has now well and truly infected the Left as well. I have little hope for the political future...

It's a bit embarassing to see the inability of these 'commentators' not to understand the basics. a) Elphicke is stepping down. b) She is giving Sunak a kicking. c) It gives Labour a full fat rebuttal to any comment on their immgration policy D)Labour will be putting up a different candidate at the Election. You're saying she hates Sunak so much that she's happy to help Starmer win the next election when he's not going to do anything different or better? Why would Starmer risk alienating his core voter base in order to get a very extreme Tory MP who even tried to influence judges in the past? It's madness.

If she doesn't fall in line, for the brief period she's in the party (I understand she is standing down before the general election), she'll lose the whip, so, right now, it's another MP who's going to vote along party lines in Labour's benefit. I probably wouldn't have accepted her into the party, but I'm not Starmer, and unlike Starmer, who, to his credit, knows how to do politics, I suspect I wouldn't be looking at a Labour majority/possible landslide if I were Labour Party leader. Even as a left-winger, I'm starting to make my peace with the idea that Starmer mostly knows what he's doing.

This move gives Labour a big cheap stick to beat the Tories with, gain maximum publicity and also potentially sway some Tory votes their way. Meanwhile Elphicke has also gained maximum publicity, which potentially extends her political career and gives her more kudos if/when she does eventually move to Reform (or similar). Simples 🙂

Why do politicians get a safety net like this? Labour should have some self esteem, protect their constituents and not allow these career politicians that know their hateful politics are their (and the country's) downfall defect. If MP's can't reconcile their grievances in their own party then resign. Stop demeaning the voters. People like Elphicke do not belong in the Labour Party and everyone knows it, she just doesn't want to lose her cushy job.

Labour voters (and others) probably want to give these Tories such an electoral trouncing, that whatever hurts them, whatever leads to their destruction, however fleeting, is fine. The just want to see them anihilated and the how doesn't matter. If this cements the message to voters that the Tories are finished and Labour is the alternative, EVEN FOR TORIES, this might pave the way for an utter electoral catastrophe for the Tories. Politicians spend enough time trying to persuade the electorate to switch their voting intention, why not MPs as well? I'm not quite sure I agree with the idea of this causing significant backlash. Surprise, shock, people who are labour supporters disagreeing, backlash in that sense perhaps. But how many people, who are strong, ideological labour supporters will now switch and vote to another party? I doubt the numbers are high, especially with how effective people have been in voting tacitcally in By-elections. I don't necessarily agree with accepting her either, but it's probably much less of a problem than said here. It's also important to keep in mind that those who want a more ideologically charged labour party have largely given up for the current term due to how far in the center Keir Starmer seems to be, I doubt this is changing much in the overall landscape.

This shows that Sir Keir Starmer is playing chess when his opponents (some within his own party) are playing checkers. He is showing that Labour is now a broad church. More importantly, he shuts down talk from Tories of Labour being soft on immigration because of their opposition to the foolish and costly Rwanda scheme. That is why this Dover MP joining Labour is a strong win for Sir Keir as she has accused Sunak of being weak on immigration.
