Great tips! As one who works in a hotel, another tip is to please try not to be rude to or yell at the hotel staff (for whatever reason) and please don't expect the hotel staff to be telepathic (very common thing that guests seem to forget), especially since we have a lot on our plate and trying to accommodate every request that is given to us. Adding onto the "don't postpone any issues", depending the time of day/night, some services or requests will be limited. For example, in the evening and in my hotel, there's less hotel staff members available (most maintenance and housekeepers are usually gone before sunset). So yes, definitely notify front desk of any issues ASAP! Also, if you need something prior to arriving to your hotel room (i.e. - request microwave, crib, etc. to be put into the room if it's not included), please call in advance and see if the staff can put it as an alert on your reservation, so that staff can check up on providing one for you (while supplies are available). Anyways, great video and thank you for sharing!

I went to MCFC as my first convention this year to visit a high school friend. I never had considered myself much of a furry before this, and now I'm looking around for different makers to get my suit! I can really agree with everything in this video obviously as it's just good advice. Also, I work at a restaurant, so THANK YOU SO MUCH for advising AGAINST ordering near close. A lot of people have no idea how much longer we stay just from even a single order. There have been multiple occasions where we stayed a FULL hour before close because someone ordered delivery 2 minutes before our cut off, and they were literally the very last house of our delivery area, so it took our driver ages to get there, ages to get back, and then we had to close the drawer. Side note, I am also planning on going to Furry Migration as it takes place only half an hour from my house, so i get to save money on the hotel, this time ill be going alone to hopefully meet more people and make some friends. Great video, though, you have earned a sub!

Hey Stormi, I also wanted to add a tip for the food situation. To save more money, bring a cooler and load it with food, drinks, and snacks. Go to a dollar store, or a Wal-Mart and stock up on the things you want to make a sandwich, chips, water, and so on. Also, make sure it is okay with the hotel, which I assume most hotels will allow you to bring your own cooler/food/drinks. Also, check to see if they have a fridge or a microwave so you can buy tv dinners, hot pockets or anything that you can microwave. My friends and I always do that when we go to conventions or to any event out of town, and we choose a day, which usually on a Saturday night, to go to a restaurant to have dinner. It helps to save money and to not starve ourselves. Hope this tip is helpful to you and anyone else who wants to stretch the dollar.

As someone who has attended dozens of furry conventions, I can verify this is all very important stuff to note. Also, as someone who has worn many hats at a pizzeria: PLEASE TIP YOUR DRIVER and DON'T ORDER 15 MINUTES BEFORE CLOSE!! Generally a 15-20% tip is considered appropriate. Less than 10% is considered somewhat singy, while no tip is considered extremely rude. Remember, most delivery drivers have to use their own vehicles, pay their own insurance, and yes, use their own gas - at my former place, the drivers only got 70 cents per delivery, regardless of the fact that many of them were over 10 miles round-trip (I lived in a somewhat rural area than most cons are but still), and 70 cents won't even cover the cost of gas to drive that far. Also, please note: MOST DELIVERY DRIVERS MAKE *LESS THAN MINIMUM WAGE*, the VERY SAME concept as a waiter/waitress ("tipped employee"). This, combined with the fact that they even still ultimately PAY for some of the gas they use, is all the more reason to please remember to tip!! Another note: DO NOT GET UPSET AT THE DRIVER, NOR WITHHOLD HIS/HER TIP, IF YOUR FOOD IS LATE. Again, as a former pizzeria manager, delivery driver, dispatcher, and cook: It is almost NEVER THE DRIVER'S FAULT if your food is late. Look, when an order is ready to go out the door, the driver isn't sitting around scratching their tailhole and just wasting time. They take the order as soon as both -the order is ready, and -the driver is available to take another order. Then, they pull out into the same traffic and red lights that everyone else is in. That, combined with the lack of ANYONE putting ANY numbers on their houses or mailboxes, and most customers with weird things (driveways being around the corner of a one-way street, for example, you'd think they'd have told me that!!) don't ever explain them well or at all. The only time you should withhold or reduce a delivery driver's tip, is if they themselves are being rude or unreasonable. Generally, if there's a problem, the fault lies with the store (or some accidental move on the driver's behalf), and is rarely intentional, so please just call the store up and be polite, unless they are rude to you. Most places will GLADLY remake your food if there is a problem. Lastly: EXPECT A LONG WAIT!!! Again, it's not Joe Schmoe the Delivery Driver's fault that you called in your pizza on Friday night at 5:30pm at a furry convention and they told you it'd be 2 hours. Guys, there's only a few delivery places around, and there's over SEVEN THOUSAND attendees of each Anthrocon and MFF. 5:30pm on Friday is busy ANYWAY for EVERY pizzeria, and you are NOT the only ones at the big convention that wants to eat pizza for dinner on Friday. We used to literally "book" the oven on Halloween, because we'd get so busy, we couldn't even take another SINGLE pizza order for four hours. We could fit twenty pizzas in the oven at a time, and it takes 60 seconds to make a pizza, so every 5 minute time block could hold up to 5 pizzas. It's the same concept at big conventions, and even smaller ones. If they have a long wait, just try around somewhere, call back later, or order your damn food earlier - you can request a specific time for delivery, guys! That's okay! In fact, for Halloween, people used to place their orders a WEEK AHEAD, because they knew! Even for just one pizza!! TL;DR: * Order your food earlier and place it for a specific time, or expect a LONG wait for delivery. * Always tip your driver no less than 15-20% (more is okay too!) If they come back with a remake, tip them another dollar or two! * If something goes wrong, call the restaurant, they will generally remake your food, sometimes without even asking for the old food back (not like they can re-sell it). * If your delivery is late, remember: It's almost NEVER THE DRIVER'S FAULT!! Maybe if 7,500 furries didn't place orders for pizza at the exact same time without warning to the pizzeria, it wouldn't have taken so long! :3

I know you mentioned tipping bellhops and such (if you have one assist you, of course, I never have), but ALWAYS tip the cleaning service! Even if, like me, you elect not to use their services during your stay, leave a tip for them in your room when you leave! Speaking of which, don't leave your room a mess for them to deal with. Clean as much as you can for them, cause you and I both know that they're dealing with so many trashed rooms already.

I'm a stickler about keeping my room tidy at cons. I know it's not my property so I try to keep it as clean as possible, especially since cleaning staff is going to be stretched in a completely booked hotel. Tipping is not really well known outside of North America which is why I emphasized it in this vid. Many times, people literally don't know better. It's not that they're being greedy.. although there are some selfish hotel patrons like that, unfortunately.

Good tips, Stormi! Since I live not to far from where my local furcon in Furry Migration is in downtown Minneapolis, most of these tips won’t apply to me, but like you said they can definitely come in handy for any other time you happen to be staying in a hotel any other time for something that isn’t a furry convention or even if you aren’t there for some sort of convention.

Stormi, I agree to arrive a day before the con. FWA 2017 was my lesson, as I arrived on a Friday (all parking was sold out at The Marriott Marquis, and we had to park 2 blocks away with no in and out privileges) FWA 2018 Galactic Gunslingers we arrived on Thursday, and had valet parking throughout our 4 night stay. I'm a Bear, my roomie is a bear, we leave the A/C on all day and night (white noise friendly). Don't forget to tip the housekeeping before you leave - at FWA I leave at least 25.00 on the table before I leave

i got hit with about $400 extra on a room for an anime con. I got the room booked for the convention before the "convention rooms" were available but nobody told me when I called the hotel. I got a reasonable price quote, got there and signed like 50 papers, then on checkout boom! Come to find out that hotels like the ones at large convention halls will only offer the con rate for specific rooms, at a specific time, and if you sign one of those 50 pages with another rate listed, you get charged that larger amount. It didnt matter that the 49 other pages listed the room and price, one said higher and I got charged that. There is no fighting it either. So Stormi Folf is absolutely correct, use a credit card that you can charge it to so you have go-home money!

Also, make sure to contact the hotel directly if anyone staying in your room may have special needs ( mobility, dietary, etc) to be sure they are prepared to meet accommodation needs. The hotel can often provide valuable information on surrounding support businesses ( restaurants, etc..) As well. We also carry snacks and bottled water just in case.

Hello, Stormi! You sound as cheap as me, regarding food! :-P I want to add that, in addition to hotel food, there are usually plenty of restaurants around to walk to. My friends and I did this during ACEN (anime con in Chicago) and it works just as well for MFF. The prices will still be high (it's freaking Chicago), but it will be cheaper than the hotel. Also, snacks for the room is another cost-saving measure. Before an anime con in the past, my bff and I bought a bunch of food at Aldi before meeting the other at the con! More hotels are removing their microwaves ad refrigerators (some still have the latter), but it's always cool to bring non-perishable (chips, fruit, pb and j, bread, jerky, etc.) snacks and a cooler that you can fill with ice from the hotel. This way, you have stuff to snack on and cold drink, which will really save you food money. Now you have even more money for souvenirs at the con! :D

I go with Hawthorne Fox and his friends, and we always split room cost, gasoline, and parking fees when we go to a furry con. I usually bring plenty of cash with me for either Dealer's Den, food, etc. Also, it's nice to pay them upfront than Paypal. You never know if you charge too much on your credit card, and it's best to save yourself the embarrassment, unless you have used your credit card a few times than most.

With furry con hotels when you stay in a room, do they like charge you per night stay? Or do you just pay for your room when you get there and be done with that? I am wanting to know this because i plan on going to anthrocon in about 2 years or so, and I've never been to a furry con, so it kinda confuses me

  • @StormiFolf

    @StormiFolf

These are very good questions :3 For most hotels, especially those around convention centers, you pay for your entire stay after you leave. What they normally do is put a hold on your credit/debit card for each night you stay. Most of them won't take cash. Some charge at a rate of per night and others bill you entirely up front once you leave. For lower end hotels or motels, you can sometimes pay per night up front, including with cash. Basically, be prepared to use a debit/credit card for reserving hotel rooms. It's pretty much a necessity. I know at FWA I was billed entirely up front once we left but I've had other times where room charges would appear every night on my statement. Just depends on the hotel. One last thing, for most hotels you have to be 21 or older to reserve a room (That doesn't mean you have to be 21 to stay in one, just the person making the reservation but they do have to be present once you arrive.)

I would even check things in the hotel room you DON'T intend on using. Let's say the microwave door is broken. If you alert the front desk upon arriving, they'll know it was like that when you arrived. If you don't, you may be charged because it would appear that YOU are the one who broke it. Also, another helpful thing about having cash is you can use it as an additional way to budget. I find it easier to stick to my budget if I set aside a certain amount of physical cash for it. If I choose to spend a little more on something in the DD, for instance, I have to consciously go to an ATM or use my card and that makes me think about it harder. Not to mention that you might run across a vendor without a card reader at a smaller con.

Stay away from the mini bar they are unbelievably expensive. I like to bring tea bags or instant coffee with me, many hotels provide a small coffee maker with coffee and tea free but some do not and room service coffee is slow, expensive and unreliable(caffeine early and fast is a big deal to me). Your room may have a refrigerator and or microwave, if not most hotels will provide them free (but some charge), find out ahead of time you may need to reserve them/ask early or go without when the hotel is packed. Staying in someone else's room when you are not registered(or letting an unregistered guest stay in yours) is theft of services and can cause all concerned to be kicked out of the hotel/con.

What is this room lottery thing you speak of? It's really important to tip the housekeeper, and tip well. First, it's respectful and common courtesy. Second, they don't make that much to begin with. Third, it helps make up for all the people who stiff them out of a tip (I've known people who actually giggle and get entertainment out of not leaving any tip at all for the housekeepers). And fourth, when you tip well, they will generally set you up with plenty of towels, supplies for the coffee maker, and so on. They do notice and appreciate it; my roomie and I tip $5 every day to the housekeepers, and several times over the years they've left personalized thank-you notes. And one last detail is what they have to deal with at furry cons, based on glances into rooms we walk by when the housekeeper has the door propped open. When they have to cart away a dumpster worth of trash out of your room, or when they have to dust around your DILDO collection that you leave out on the table or windowsill [true story based on eyewitness confirmation], you can leave them a tip.

Another tip when staying at a hotel. Please don’t leave a huge mess on check out day. House keepers have a time limit to clean each room and a huge mess just makes it worse, and don’t smear lotion on the mirror. It won’t come off. Keep all trash near trash bin( and/or place all garbage near trash bin when checking out) As a house keeper myself it’s not fun to clean a huge mess while having limited time to clean.

Hey Stormi! Do you ever plan to make a video about ways to travel to a convention? I've always wanted to go to one but can't because I don't know how to drive yet. So any advice on how to get there would be fantastic!

guys just go to walmart or something like that for food. There's no wait, It's less expensive, and you don't have to tip anyone. Every time I go on a trip or go to a con I buy a rotisserie chicken, a loaf of bread, a pack of yogurt, some sports drinks, and a bag of baby carrots and I just live off of that for however long I'm there. If I'm really hungry or need a bigger meal I can just by a sandwich or two for wayyy cheaper then anything I could get from a hotel. It works just fine and it's wayy cheaper then delivery.

another thing you should check for is broken things. Even the walls. Call and report everything. Don't be the one charged for the dent in the wall because you didn't report it right away. My favorite noise canceling devices. Ear plugs.

Question: At Furry Cons, is it common for the people selling stuff there to accept PayPal or is it not all that common? I heard that using PayPal instead of Credit or Debit cards is safer since people can’t get your card info, or at least PayPal makes it harder for them to get such info.

Booking a main hotel room has become laughably competitive for me. I got so intent on getting a room at the main hotel for Anthrocon last year that I coded a super simple script that automatically put my info and booked the room for me. Best decision ever.

I had no idea about quiet hours! Also random hotel story. Last year at the westin, i needed to to my room asap. Was having a heat stroke. Couldn't put my paws or head back on. And you know what staff running the elevator said? "You'd look more convincing with the head on". My face was red, was struggling to breathe, HEALTH ISSUES, and almost puked into my fursuit. Me and ny friends had to wait 40 minutes while i could barely stand. Was not happy. If someone says they're having a heat stroke and is hyperventilating. *LET THEM IN THE ELEVATOR* Also another thing I recommend. Lock your luggage with a padlock. Especially if you have a fursuit. Maybe that's just me. But I'd rather be safe then sorry with my belongings. Also BRING YOUR OWN WATER AND SNACKS. The water at the con will most likely be ice cold. You can in fact go into shock. Buuuttt. Waterfountains usually have cold yet not ice water. That snd ive gone into shock from drinking cold water when i was overheating.
