Furniture Flip | China Cabinet Makeover | Painting with Fusion Mineral Paint

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Flipping furniture is fun! It's surprising what a coat of a paint, new hardware or just some modernizing can do to a piece that you thought was outdated...or even ugly.
In this video I transform my mom's 1978 china cabinet into a stylish cabinet for myself. My mom didn't need this cabinet any longer and it's been around my whole life. My parent's bought it the year I was born. I felt I wanted to keep it just a little longer!
I have been hearing about Fusion Mineral Paint for a few years now. I knew this was the project I wanted to try it out on. I give my honest, first time user review on the paint.
Along with painting, I change out the hardware, touch some of it up with Rub 'n Buff, add wallpaper and fix up some dings that happened over the forty plus years we've lived with this cabinet. I'm not a professional furniture restorer, I'm somewhere below amateur. So come learn with me!

I can't even tell you how much I appreciated running into this video. I have an old china cabinet of my grandmothers that is just as horrible. From the french applique on top to the clunky monstrosity ornamentation on the bottom (much like your doors!) I have always hated it and wasn't sure how to deal with it. My gosh, now I will just try removing all that nonsense, and then get down to the actual piece - which doesn't have a bad shape at all - and then it might be fun to paint it.

I'm so glad you found us, too! I was so shocked to find out that all that applique stuff was only foam. And it was really satisfying ripping it all off. Definitely remove it all, patch and sand if you need and then paint it into something you'll love! Have fun with your new project!!

@@HomeCulture Thank you! I'm going for it! (My mouth fell open at that foam, and I went to look at what I have. I have a feeling I'll find the same. It's the same era...)

@@greenshp For 40 years we thought it was wood. They did do a good job painting it to look the same as the rest that was really wood. And some how they made that foam super hard. It never dented even though my parents moved several times. I'm sure it's some product that is now banned due to health reasons 😂😂

@@HomeCulture My grandmother died about 10 yrs ago, and for some reason, pressured on the spur of the moment, I kept that monstrosity. LOL But I always assumed it was wood, just really BAD 1970s taste wood. I'll bet those darned moldings are foam. 😄 Grandma would be mortified. I intend to attempt to remove them, do some repairs, and paint the whole thing mustard yellow. Revenge on those 70s no-taste manufacturers will be sweet.

@@greenshp Mustard yellow will look amazing! Do it! And exact your revenge for the terrible designs of the 70s! And I'm sure our families paid good money for this future that just turned out to be foam!

Thank you! Fusion is so different than other paints -the coverage is so good. And it's so easy to work with. I didn't know how the grey-blue Ash would work with the brown, but I was nicely surprised! I'll try to keep up the bougie-ness lol 😆

It's so disappointing when you think of what it cost someone to buy furniture decades ago and find out that what they/you thought was wood is actually substandard material. 😢

I kept the foam and plastic bits to show my mom and she was shocked. They bought that when they had a young family, I think they expected better quality for their money. But it's lasted over 40 years surprisingly!

  • @HomeCulture

Thank you! Fusion says this is primer, paint and protector all-in-one. I didn't seal or wax this cabinet....that being said, I have started using a protective finish on Fusion. On dark colours you can see marks if you drag something over the surface, most times they wipe off, but I don't want to think about it. I love the feel of wax over Fusion, it's really nice. I've also used Saman brush on clear coat and even sprayed some Behr clear coat just recently. All had good results. Fusion is still my go to for furniture for sure. But just to be extra careful, I do now add a protective layer. Funny thing about this cabinet -- I'm going to be REPAINTING it soon! I love this colour, but it's too dark in the basement. So complete makeover time!

If you had cut the top of that cabinet off and made it straight if would’ve been so much nicer. You could’ve also used each piece as a stand-alone. The bottom by itself would made a beautiful credenza.

I think the doors are the ugliest - I tried to think of how to fix those, but the glass is cut to fit and I didn't want to have custom glass made! I agree the bottom is actually a pretty nice piece, I might end up just keeping that piece when we finish the basement. I actually did considered cutting that hump off the top - but I left it because it would be the same brown as the top of the bottom piece. 70's furniture so fun to redo because they had some crazy style - and my parents paid money for this! Thanks for the comment!
