FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA's Tom Burke (Praetorian Jack) on his bond with Anya, flamethrowers and fear

Ойын-сауық

We've been waiting for this one!!! The hotly anticipated prequel to 'Mad Max: Fury Road' from director George Miller is finally here
And if you, like us, were wondering how Furiosa (played by Charlize Theron in Fury Road) became such a powerhouse - the answer is all in this movie.
Anya Taylor-Joy plays the younger Furiosa in this earlier version on the Wasteland. It tells the story of how she was snatched from the Green Place by the Biker Horde led by Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) and follows her quest to try and get back there. Expect the usual petrol, cars, gruesome scenes and as this interviewer puts it... 'sweaty palms'!
Along the way Furiosa meets Praetorian Jack (Tom Burke) who TNM's Clodagh Griffin (@clogrifff) chats to here about the grueling filming process, premiering at Cannes and his incredible Australian accent
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is in cinemas from May 24th

Tom Burke plays a very good and convincing Cormoran Strike in the British series Strike (based on the Cormoran Strike detective books by Robert Galbraith aka JK Rowling). He really brings the character to the screen. I mean after reading the books, if you watch the show, not one moment you think Burke is miscast, he is absolutely spot on. Never heard of him before watching the Strike series but I am happy to see if he brings that level of professionalism and talent on a big blockbuster. Chris Hemsworth as the vilain I feel will be a blast to watch too.

That stuff about accents is very revealing. In particular, the fact that Miller was initially against the idea of Burke doing an Australian accent, and thinking it wouldn’t work. It explains why no attempt was made by Tina Turner, Charlize Theron (and by extension Taylor-Joy, who ironically mimics Theron’s adopted American accent to play an Australian), Nicholas Hoult, Zoe Kravitz, Rosie Huntingdon-Whiteley, Riley Keough or Tom Hardy to do one. In the case of Turner, it’s at least plausible that the character she is playing is actually an American, as she was an adult before the fall of civilization. But in the case of all the others, the lack of an Australian accent - in a world where everyone else has one - makes absolutely zero sense. Actors love the challenge of learning an accent, so it explains a lot to learn that they were dissuaded from trying by a director who - from Burke’s comments - appears to have erroneously believed it couldn’t be done convincingly. I suspect Miller was conditioned, by having lived through the pre-KZread, pre-dialect coach era when we Australians had to endure absolutely appalling quasi-cockney “Australian” accents in American films, to think that pulling off a convincing Australian accent is more difficult than it actually is when a talented actor has access to the resources now available to them. And some of those actors have proven they are well and truly up to the task. Theron, a South African, isn’t even a native English speaker. She spoke Afrikaans growing up, and only learned to speak English as an adult. And yet she was able to learn a flawless general American accent, without a trace of her native South African accent. Taylor-Joy was not only capable of learning a general American accent (to play an Australian - the irony bears repeating), but of learning Theron’s particular, distinctive cadence. Hardy has worked in various different accents in his career.
