I've suffered from Tourrette's for over 30 years, and it's so emotionally and physically draining that I am often in actual pain. I don't have involuntary shouts and swearing like this character, but my twitches are very bad. I've lost friends who were embarrassed to be seen with me. I suffer from major depression as a result of the condition and the lack of support. That said, this episode had me wetting my pants from laughing so hard. I can't even watch the whole clip without crying from laughter. If I can find humor in this horrible disease I know all too well, I'll be okay.

+Splatador I hear yuh. I used to struggle with OCD and had some twitches. Most people were cool about it, but I had to confront one of my "cool and handsome" co-workers when he made fun of me for it. He shut right the f*&$k up and was pretty genteel to me afterwards. Anyway, my story had a happy ending, and nowadays I don't suffer from it. I can only imagine how tough it must be to have it for 30 YEARS. Hang in there.

See, kids, before South Park, this is how we learned about Tourettes.

OH BOY! They had a follow-up episode where the lawyers were helping this guy land a big business deal, so they had him hypnotized to stop the Tourette's temporarily while he signed the deal. Just as he signed the deal, the hypnosis wore off, and he started going OH BOY, and Douglas saved it by saying, "Oh boy oh boy oh boy - this is a great deal!"

Whoa. that's insanely good acting.

I remember seeing this episode at the time and thinking it was hilarious - just another of those "diseases" that they have in America and nowhere else. But, as time has passed, I've realised that these strange diseases DO exist elsewhere, and it's an issue we should be talking about and, as a civilised society, dealing with. Tourettes is just another disability and, given that society is judged by how it treats its disabled people, we should all look carefully at ourselves in these cases. I certainly needed to (and, if I'm honest, probably need to work a little more on it too), and I'm sad - although also grateful - that it took a programme like L.A. Law to initially open my eyes.

I usually laugh off just about any comedic usage of Tourettes, but watching this scene just makes me... Uncomfortable. Not because it offends me, but because his portrayal is extremely accurate. Not that everybody who has it swears under their breath, but all of the issues he faces because of his Tourettes, how it gets worse as his stress level rises... Shit fucking _sucks._

@@Gideon13397 I'm well aware? This is a 2 year old comment but I'm now realizing I forgot to specify that my discomfort comes from HAVING Tourette's. This portrayal is so accurate that in my head, I imagine this is what I look like from others' perspectives

Honestly, haloperidol is a tranquilizer. The people who use it are mindless and brainless. I was on haloperidol and I could not control my muscles. I was locked in a position staring at the ceiling for a few weeks and it was awful because i couldn't talk or say anything about it. :( I don't have tourettes, I was psychotic and they gave me haldol just to calm me down. It calmed me down too much. I wish they would have never given it to me. Now my muscles twitch uncontrollably.

I was prescribed that when I was a teenager and wow did I end up in the same position as you. Suddenly my neck just locked up and I couldn’t move for days. The only thing that helped was Benadryl but I had no clue what was going on at the time. Scared me to no end!

One time I went to a DVD theater in Korea with my girllfriend, and the worker there was very friendly and well-spoken, then would just suddenly have an outburst of saying something like "Yeah, man! YEAAAAH!" Sometimes young men in Korea act like this in an attempt to seem cool, or western, and I find it obnoxious so I told him very politely but sternly "Please don't yell at me." After several more such outbursts (and a particularly outspoken commentary about the new Mad Max movie), I figured out that he had Tourette's. I can only imagine what a challenging job he faces in a service sector job like that.

I remember watching this as a kid, first time I heard of tourettes. Social media has really normalized it, showing every day life with this condition.

It was really funny and really touching at the same time.

I knew a guy in college with Tourettes, and we had to educate people. I also taught a student with it who was taking meds for it, but it made him VERY SLEEPY in class!

G'OH BOY!

i tried not to laugh until the ending which made me feel bad...

Quincy did an episode about Tourette's eight years earlier. The kid at the beginning of that episode (who died accidentally trying to avoid some kids who were going to beat him up), all he did was laugh really loud at the movies, maybe make a few weird noises as well. Quincy later met another young man with the disease who was trying out for a fancy music school like Juilliard, and the Tourette's reared its ugly head during the piano piece he was playing at the tryouts. The episode ends with the young man walking away from his piano in embarrassment.

Saw this as a kid and I thought it was kind of Funny then because back in the 80's it was the first time I ever heard of tourettes syndrome, but now that I'm older it's still funny because that guy is an actor, but I pray for anyone suffering through this illness. I've seen talk shows with people who have tourettes and they suffer greatly. Peace

When Noah returned a couple of seasons later, it was during the story arc where Douglas was dating, of all people, Vanna White! Noah danced with her at the Christmas party and inadvertently said 'whore, slut, bitch!'.

I wish people would stop posting comments making fun of people with tourettes.... this is onlu an act but people are just like him.

Damn good portrayal of this debilitating condition. Hope this made people less narrow minded at the time and since...

At first I was going to scream "EQUAL OPPORTUNITY YOU IDIOT" when she asked the burden question but realized "Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990" didn't exist at the time of filming.

This shows just how bad things were for Americans with disabilities by 1989 and sheds some light on the need for the act. It also demonstrates how such an act was finally accepted in 1990 if things were this bad in 89.

I remember that one. The folks at the firm weren't too happy with Jonathan.

Oh poor man! That must be a horrible illness!

My grandson-in-law has Tourette's but his is eye twitching and moving his face and nose around like he has allergies. A man I knew in college had it but he would move his head around and it looked like he was trying to shoo a bug or fly away from his head. He would say things like "Boo" but never swore. My grandson can control it unless he gets really upset or nervous which is like in this scene where the man is getting agitated it gets worse.

It’s funny at first but near the ending it’s sad

I wonder what an individual with Tourettes is like if they've never heard a curse word.

@Stefan990 ALF was a character that appeared on a sitcom called ALF in the 1980s. ALF stood for Alien Life Form (ALF). ALF was portrayed by a puppet. I don't know if the person and puppet ever did standup comedy. This doesn't belong in the comedy category. There is nothing funny about Tourette's syndrome. This actor did a superb job. And the person who posted this just makes the point that too many people poke fun at someone who is different, even if he can't help it.

To be honest, Tourette's like that seen in this clip of L.A. LAW is very rare. A very small % of cases have ever been reported. While it is true the use of the words in the scene was meant to be humorous, at the end of this episode, you really felt for the character. I don't recall the final scene with this man, but for some reason I keep thinking he committed suicide. If I am wrong please correct me and tell me how this episode ended. It's been 24 years since I last saw it.

Hi. I know it's been five years since you commented but I just want to say I watched the entire episode. It ends with the jury finding Noah the plantiff in the right and awarding him $150,000 in backpay and $100,000 in front-pay. However, after the trial is over his boss, his boss's attorney and his attorney all speak afterward and his boss says he'll rehire Noah, give him $50,000 upfront, a new car and promote him to "research director". Also, with a modem and fax machine, Noah can work from home. Noah's attorney tells him to go with the $250,000 instead because he doesn't think Noah should stay in the shadows in the comfort of his own home and should be accepted in the outside world and find a job where he gets respected despite his disorder. Noah says he appreciates it but he takes the offer instead so "no one has to hear me" It's a bitter-sweet ending really. Hope that helps.

Noah came back for another episode a couple of years later to get help for funding his own business. Douglas and Jonathan met with the investors but didn't introduce them to Noah for fear that his Tourette's would put them off. They did eventually meet Noah and assured him that the Tourette's wasn't a problem, but they filed fraud charges against the firm for what they saw as deception.

@bjggjb I remember it, but I never watched it, and I'm sure I've watched worse shows over the years. And from what I understand, it was a fairly good sitcom. Perhaps there was something else I watched instead during the same time slot. I do remember seeing ALF on an episode of the Hollywood Squares. Also, I don't think people should be offended by the outtake. ALF was imitating the actor on LA Law, not actually calling anyone an N-- or an a--hole (another term ALF used).

@Squealer01 Despite the crude inane joke, I will. An understanding mind deserves to have at least that much in return. I've never laughed at these kinds of things outside the seclusion of my room, but, for whatever it's worth, you have my word I'll never add to their suffering.

@jihadsoup It's not weak. There's a strong distinction between laughing at an actor who is portraying an illness and someone who is forced to live every day with the crushing effects of it. The worst laughing at this will do is hurt the actor's feelings. The real world's often an incredibly depressing place. If people want to come on here and laugh at a fictitious portrayal of something, then I think it's a hell of a lot better than having people laughing at unfortunate people in real life.
