That intro came about when Eddie Van Halen wondered what would happen if you did slap bass technique on guitar. He was a constant experimenter and was always trying new things on guitar. This song is also a great example of Eddie's prowess as a rythym player. It goes without saying he was a monster lead guitarist, but his rythym skills are often overlooked.

Yes, if you get down to it Eddie was really a music geek, happy experimenting with new things. I sometimes wonder what would have happened if he'd have ended up in some progressive rock band like Rush, Yes or ELP. Maybe I smoke too much weed😂.

I think what makes reaction videos so popular, especially on songs like this one, is people are able to relive hearing it for the first time through someone else. We've heard it dozens of times and love it, but can never have that first experience again, and let's face it, everyone we hang out with has already heard it, too. It's what makes it fun.

This was Van Halen at their absolute peak. Having received their Fair Warning release when it first hit the shelves in 1981...when I dropped the needle on the first groove of that killer opener of " Mean Street ", I was hooked for life. This cut really defined my tough teen years. Well into my adult years. This was Eddie at his absolute finest. Before Dave sold out to himself.

  • @sydneysdaddy2007

Fair Warning was said to be a message to Dave that he was on the verge of being fired. Even if not true, this whole album plays as angry and raw. Eddie was on fire, Alex pounded the skins, Michael's harmony vocals are perfect, and DLR had serious soul and richness to his lead vocals.

The Album Cover is a collage of some images from a painting called The Maze from the 1950's (William Kurelek) It depicts his tortured youth. It's quite a disturbing painting. It's fun trying to pick out the bits in the painting that Van Halen used for the cover. It's not as easy as you'd imagine.

Yeah I was a teenager in the early 80’s when I first heard it on the radio, then all the kids walking to school with their boomboxes. 40+years later, it’s still great. There will only be one Van Halen. Eddie Van Halen R.I.P.

David Lee Roth IS a Black artist. You could tell that from Runnin With The Devil. By the time Fair Warning came out, he was honorary in my house.😁

Watching your video just gave me an epiphany as to why I like reaction videos so much. First of all, VH was my very first fav band as a kid in the 80s. And in that era one of my favorite things to do was to listen to music with my friends And I can remember the day I heard this song, where I was, who I was with and how we felt about it. It was almost as if you were a part of our crew (picture The Stranger Things kids 😂) but this is an activity adults don’t really do anymore and I think I crave it and it’s an itch that is ever so slightly fulfilled hanging out with you and listening to these songs for the time again. Thank you my friend! ✌️ 🙏🏼

i remember the day i heard this, having brought it home from the record store. I purchased it with Billy Squier, Don't Say No . Another amazing full on classic record. You should take a listen to something off of that as well. Every VH record for a while, had some groundbreaking guitar work on it. Glad you enjoyed this and discovered the amazing VH.

I'm 55 but back in 1981 when this came out, our whole neighborhood went to the local department store and misappropriated an 8-Track of Fair Warning, the new album from our favorite band Van Halen. The 30 minute walk home along rail road tracks was awesome, as we took turns checking out the album cover. That 8 track blared on an old player we kept stacked with batteries all summer at the playground. Not one bad song and arguably the best guitar rock album ever. It made us tough in the Mean Streets of Carbondale Pennsylvania. Great times until Sammy Hagar replaced David Lee Roth on vocals and their sound went top 40 rock

Van Halen's best album, so of course, the one that sold the least and panned by lots of critics.Eddie Van Halen at his best, wrote and performed most of this album in seclusion and cocaine crazy, arranged ,recorded and mastered by genius's, so wonderfully balanced. I love how short(sort of) this song is, give you a taste and wanting more.

Being a guitar player Eddie was a big influence. Alex ,the drummer I thought, never got the recognition he should. He complimented Eddie’s guitar style so much. I don’t think a lot of their songs would have been as good if it wasn’t for Alex.

When I was in junior high school, I won a talent contest doing Eddie VH air guitar on a tennis racket...lol They were my favorite band by far, and I would draw their logo on everything. It's been a while since I heard Mean Street, and it just gave me goosebumps hearing it here. No question, Fair Warning is my favorite album and, in my opinion, their best work and sound. They made Rock and Roll fun. Never anything like VH before or since. Rock On 😎

As much attention as Edward was given for his guitar work, he always always always turned the spotlight away, and praised his big brother, Alex, for his work behind the drum kit. Reverend Al had his favorite drummers, and now he's one of your favorite drummer's favorite drummers. He had a way of sounding like he was playing fast and loose, which he had to do in order to keep Ed's guitar tethered to the Earth or it might wander off into the cosmos and they'd never finish a song. The brothers played with an uncanny connection, able to embellish each others' musical phrasings as though Al was playing the guitar part on the drums and Ed was playing drum parts on the guitar. The more you listen, the more you'll hear and appreciate that aspect of the band. Every member of the band was overloaded with talent, effectively making it a Supergroup. Enjoying your reactions to Van Halen, the GOAT of Rock bands.

Looooving your Fair Warning reactions. I've binged them tonight and subscribed. Love your enthusiasm for the mighty VH. You grasp right away what truly set them apart from their "peers". Even nearly half a century later, they're still crazy fresh and ahead of their time. I've seldom actually encountered people who really get their genius the way you've captured it.

Mugs We have to give thanks to Gene Simmons (Demon from KISS) recommended Mammoth (original name for Van Halen) a record deal with Warner Bros. Band realize that Mammoth was already registered from another band. So, original frontman, David Lee Roth suggested Eddie and Alex use their last name as their band, Van Halen. They had iconic engineer named Ted Templeman work on their albums. They recorded albums with DLR to last album, 1984. During 1984, there were issues between DLR and Eddie. Eddie wanted go different direction in his music while DLR wanted guitar-based music. DLR left the band in 1985 for his solo music. Knowing DLR not returning, Eddie gotten veteran frontman, Sammy Hagar to continue their music, nicknamed, "Van Hagar". Then Sammy left the band for his solo stuff as he did prior to joining VH. Both DLR and Sammy reunited with VH on few occasions. Then DLR rejoined VH and Eddie had his only child, Wolfgang on Bass leaving out Michael Anthony) Both Sammy and Michael were not happy, but Eddie stated that he wanted his son in the band playing together. VH recorded last album in 2012. No one except Van Halen family knew Eddie was dealing with cancer. He fought his illness until 2020; Eddie died from cancer.
