Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) - 3D animation

Ғылым және технология

This medical animation describes the functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), or commonly known as sinus surgery, is minimally invasive surgical procedure for serious sinus conditions. Medical professional use the term “functional” because the surgery is done to restore how your sinuses work, or function.
Healthcare providers use nasal endoscopes - thin tubes with lights and lens - to ease your sinus symptoms without making incisions in or around your nose. Studies show between 80 % and 90% of people who’ve had this surgery feel it solved their sinus issues.
How is functional endoscopic surgery performed?
A decongestant medication is inserted in your nose, followed by a nasal endoscopy. An injection of a numbing solution is inserted into your nose, and the endoscope is inserted gently. Surgical tools are used alongside the endoscope to remove bone, diseased tissue or polyps that may be blocking your sinuses.
Most functional endoscopic surgeries last about two hours.
This 3d animation is licensable for healthcare providers to assist with their patient education.

I am going to have this surgery in a few months. I have eosinophilic asthma and I'm told that there is a high probability the polyps will return. I'm not worried about the surgery, even with the risks but the most depressing part of it is that the problem will probably return. The ENT Doctor who will be doing my surgery mentioned that he would like to be able to prescribe biologics (injections) but they're not yet available for my kind of case in the health authority area where I live.

@@MarcoMadridista - As I went through our National Health Service, I got delayed. Good timing for you to ask because I had the FESS procedure on Monday - 11 March. It seems to have gone very well I think. I was told it was a long operation as there was a lot to do. I also lost a lot of blood. Despite all that, I don't have any facial bruising or swelling, which I am pleasantly surprised about. The main thing that was stressed to me is doing nasal washes with saline water three times a day - to get any blood and blood clots out. I quickly found out that the small ampules of saline water the hospital provided along with a syringe were not going to be sufficient... I already had a rechargeable nasal washer gismo so just had to buy 5 litres of sterile water and suitable salt off Amazon, next day delivery. That did the trick in terms of getting some quite big blood clots out. Each day sees less and less blood and blood clots being removed. The surgeon told me that it's really important because any blood clots left behind will scab over and be a blockage. Looking forward, the only concern is if and when the polyps return. However, even if they do return at some point, there is a relatively minor surgery that will remove them - minor because the major work only needs to be done once. Or... our NHS in my area will start funding biologics injections, which would be great.
