Oni are by far my favourite monster in Japanese mythology. Not just because I'm a sucker for giant monsters in general, but because of what they seem to represent. Most stories about them seem to portray them less as mindless monsters, and more like victims of tragedy. They became evil enough to become Oni due to unfortunate circumstances. They're tragic creatures.

Before you mentioned that animals become them through age I was thinking ‘How come like all dolphins haven’t become one?’ But how long is too long, is it relative to their lifespan? Like could a turtle or tortoise or even a Greenland shark become one?

As far as I know, it's measured by centuries. Where some items that exist for 100 years become yokai (various obake like lanterns or umbrellas, for example), animals such as foxes (kitsune) can become even more magical with each passing century (the kyuubi being arguably the most famous example). Please take this information with a grain of salt, though, as I'm not a scholar.

What’s interesting about Oni is they have a similar role to Western demons in their role as torturers of hell. But they’re almost anti-heroish compared to the outright villainous demons. Because Oni also have a duty to bring souls back to hell that are still stuck in the realm of the living. Vengeful spirits especially are usually spirits that ravage the mortal realm when they should be in hell, and Oni have a habit of tracking them down and dragging them back to hell. Almost being a kind of lawful evil that helps remove the more chaotic vengeful spirits from our world. It’s why in recent years they’ve been seen in a more mixed light with people dressing up as them or using their masks to guard houses and such. Because the mere presence of them or even just a mask resembling them is said to terrify evil spirits and keep them away.

Fun fact: shuten doji actually wore an Oni mask to prank people of his race and when he wanted to remove the mask it could not so he didn't turn into an Oni because of sins or bad behaviours he turned because the mask he wore was not normal and it turned him into an Oni thanks

Well, it's important to explain that this is one of many myths. Another story states that a cow and a tiger meet, it'll make an oni (hence the horns and tiger loincloth the oni is usually depicted with). This is also based off the Chinese zodiacs that came to Japan, since in the order it's mouse, cow, tiger and so on (notice how the cow and the tiger are together)

ah yes, my favorite part of Japanese mythology is when shuten douji(drunkard short girl) beats up a celestial, gets land in heaven and drinks with a fish working for dragons. also worth noting is Shuten Douji's right hand commander, Ibaraki Douji, becoming a hermit pretending to be a human and helping a shrine maiden and a magician through general antics.

Wow. I just read the lore for Kazan Yamaoka, and this actually made me see him very differently. If you haven't already, I highly suggest you reading his lore to see how well it matches up with mythology and Japanese tradition. Also, one question: Does the name "Kazan Yamaoka" have cultural significance in Japan?

It all depends on kanji symbol used, for example the word kami can have several symbol and meaning and those symbol includes 神(god), 紙(paper), 髪(hair), you usually tell the difference with how the sentence going. Also, when combined with other kanji, the pronunciation of those kanji can change; for example the kanji for above water is 水上, now the word water is pronounced mizu, while the word up/above is ue; so you word expect the kanji 水上 would be pronounced mizuue, but in actuality it is pronounced as suijyou. So saying it in laymans term, Japanese is a real pain in the ass to learn and I was glad that my parents forced me to learn it as a child. And to your question, if it means what it means, kazan means volcano and yamaoka should mean deep in the mountain, and since Japanese have surname coming first, while first name coming last, his name would be Yamaoka Kazan, meaning volcano from the deep mountain.

I hate demon slayer because it's called "demon slayer" but they're not demons. They're vampires. And the word they call them isn't even demon or vampire. They say oni, which means ogre. Demon would be akuma. The word for vampire is kyuuketsuki

@@kusogaki_shion I would consider them demons. I’m pretty sure that “oni” refers to demons and ogres, trolls etc. If u don’t like it that’s completely fine It’s just something i like to watch so :) plus they are literally called “oni” in the show and it’s in Japanese
