Just to update on the bores, its a trick of the camera, they don't look scored much in real life, if you look at 10:59 you can see what they actually look like.

Pick up a ball hone or flex hone. They leave a fantastic crosshatch. Camera is not doing you any favours. Nice video. Enjoy watching your channel.

@@waynelewes7817 I watch all kinds of things. I watch the lads in Pakistan who build buses and people who drive lorries along dangerous mountain roads. Computers don't tend to rust its true and they are best worked on indoors! Best to let my local garage fix my car and for me to fix their computer. 🙂
could be a trick of the camera but the honing looked as it it was done with course stones. I think machine shops use sussessively finer grades of stones to give a fine cross hatch finish. Maybe I'm nit picking and it will run for 100K miles!
10:26 is very important as Dean states! My Ibiza Cupra 1.4 tsi twincharge engine had to get rebuilt after I blew one of the pistons, (common fault in the cave engines) and during the engine rebuild process the mechanic put one of my con rod caps wrong way and after 400 miles later on the new rebuilt engine my car starting knocking again. Absolutely gutted. Dean I wish I brought my car to you man I’m actually so gutted. Had to be sold for spares or repairs 😢
I've got to say your confidence in the engine rebuilds is awesome and I love watching them good stuff
Hi Dean, I love how you just get on with each job as it appears. I think with glaze honing, you go slowly as straight in alignment with the bore as you can. The angle is not critical but an even finish is. Spray cutting fluid down the bore and on the stones and go gently. One further thing, look after your honing tool, Keep it in a box so to protect the stones because they are what decides the quality of the finish. One final question, what make of knee pads do you use, I work work in shorts all the year round but struggle to find good ones that stay up when you walk and yours look decent.
A honing massacre 😱 that was The Little Big Horn & Battle of Hastings all in one Dean 😂 but great honing action 😉 and yeah learnt throughout my life you can NEVER have too much Lube.
Great video Dean, the insight into how these VAG TFSI engines are built is fascinating. The incident with the camshaft is a great tip for anyone rebuilding their engine. I must admit I have always fancied an Audi TT, but never got round to getting hold of one at the right money! Hope everything goes well with the restart. 🤞
For this type of honing, look into flexhone. Use with regular engine oil and wash out properly with dish washing detergent and water. You don't want any honing material to remain in the bore grooves. Best hone that doesn't come from a professional hone machine.
I know it was your first time honing cylinders, but you need loads of lubricant. The bores did not look good, I wouldn't be surprised if the engine has sealing, compression, blowby issues.
Excellent video, it's really difficult to film and work on cars at the same time but you're a masterclass in making it look easy. Thanks for all the effort you put in, it's totally worth it from this end.
I was a bit worried by the honing of the bores, better to use oil rather than WD 40 as its a Water Dispersant with limited lubrication. But as you say the camera does not show the true picture. Love the channel and keeping my fingers crossed for the S3 Competeforcars, got a few tickets but I don't have a good track record on raffles....
Superb work as always Dean, I still cannot believe how you remember where everything goes, spot on and hats off to you Sir, btw looking forward to more vlogs on the VW transporter 😃😃👍👍

When doing the cylinder hone better to use some heavier oil and ideally feed it in as you do the hone
Great work Dean, your videos are inspiring for any novice home mechanic, well done.
Always great to watch ....zero BS audio .....your skill level and mechanical bravery are leagues above mine but it's great to watch your endeavors 😲😉. Keep up the great work
Love watching the rebuilds If I had a workshop would do it myself. Fantastic to watch. What about the TVR?
Enjoyed this format a lot more with you going into detail with the voiceovers. Keep it up
Nothing worse than an invisible twanging ball bearing, Dean. Excellent piece of work. How you do all that with such ease is beyond me. Great video as always. Cheers, Bob
.I've seen you rebuild a few engines now and your knowledge and skill are a pleasure to watch👍
When I've done honing I used loads of lubricant, tqf is good to use, wd40 is not good enough to use unless you use tons of it.
Great work ,a tip when honeing bores is to spray oil or WD in the cylinder to keep the stones well lubricated
Excellent work dean you make it look so easy
Great watch. I have 2015 TTs. Which I’ve had for almost 4 years. Still surprises me how powerful this 2.0 4 cylinder engine is. It really does pull. It feels faster than 310bhp.
Love how you left 'Circleeps' in, made me chuckle.
You are a superb mechanic very impressed. Looking forward to the fitting. 👍👍👍👍👍
Always nice to see another ccza rebuild. Rebuilt mine after valve wear running lean, then the intake balance shaft failed which is becoming more common on these.
Really enjoyed watching the Audi TT engine build on what to do and how to do it 👍
Great video. . Interesting watching it all go together.
Even when you get frustrated, your attitude is fantastic. Good video keep them coming
Top stuff Dean, really enjoyed watching the rebuild, hopefully It'll soon be purring !!!, Good job as always, well done.
Before I first remove the exhaust cam, I like to take my palms and hit the ends of each side of the cam. This essentially slides the adjustable lobes to the left and right, centering the lobes. But being that it is laying in the head still, you can’t slide them to far, and the ball and spring don’t go flying. This action lets me drop the cam directly back in when it’s time for re-assembly.
Always watch your videos and it amazes me every time you make it look so easy rebuilding engines and puts into perspective how it costs so much to have this type of thing done by a garage
Great videos. Love watching them and getting a few tips, well done
Another great honest video Den. I feel your pain fighting seized bolts, loosing bits that go ping...FFS 🤬..😂😂. Keep doing what you're doing. 👍

As i said it looks awful camera, looks nothing like that in real life, if you look at the clip of all 4 pistons fitted you can see what it actually looks like.
With this tool you have to rotate it until it with make some dust and get harder to rotate in a steel cylinder. You dont have no more oil comsuption with new pistonrings and full compression. This tool works really fine if you use only the finest brackets.

By the way, you could use standard engine oil for lubing anything. But test the fitting of the rodcaps with some plastigage to check the gaps.

Them bores after you honed them looked deeply scratched, what stones did you use course, medium or fine? On camera it looks like you honed them with a brick if it smokes when refitted there's your problem.

Ignore the negative comments Dean, I think the engine is looking sweet. Keep the great vids coming mate 👍💯
Hi Dean, are those pistons weighted? They look a lot heavier than the old ones... Maybe the revision ones, that's a common problem on these engines. May have added weight in the sidewalls to overcome the Gudgeon pin problem. Great content as usual mate, met a guy on holiday in Norfolk, we talked about you and your channel, he's local to you. We're all enjoying the projects, good luck with the raffle. Would love to see an Audi B8.5 S4, would give my right arm for the upgrade from my S-line one.
Should be a smooth idle on start up dean 👍💪😉
Hey Dean, cheers as always for the video 👍 Top tip - don’t wear gloves when dealing with bearings and re-assembly of parts such as the big ends (or anything with equally tight tolerances); as demonstrated nicely at 09:16, it’s easy to accidentally loose tiny little bits of glove in the wrong place and not notice. Most of the time you’ll probably be alright, but it’s not worth the potential risk. You can also get much better feel of how well those crucial parts are fitting together. Yes it’s more of a faff to clean your hands in between, but defo worth it. The bores defo do look better at 10:59; it’s difficult to pass judgement without being there. Personally for something as critical as that I’d get a machine shop to do it so you know it’s right, for the minimal extra cost. Hope it all comes together nicely mate 👍
@georgedaville4662
11 ай бұрын
More cost, as you would have the strip the block down completelyfor a machine shop to do the job!
@PGriff
11 ай бұрын
@@georgedaville4662 True, but for the tiny amount of extra for a few gaskets and crush washers, personally speaking I’d rather go that extra mile when you’re already that deep into it. I’m just about into double figures for engines I’ve rebuilt, and I’d still much rather get that sort of thing done professionally as opposed the chance I may/may not do a decent job myself. Personal preference I guess. Cheers

@@PGriff I must admit that if was personally rebuilding this motor I would strip it completely and have the bores done at a machine shop, as well the head overhaul and full block clean/ check. I guess Dean is working to a budget?

the reason I didn't strip to right down is because it didn't need it imo. engines only done 60k miles and the big end bearings looked brand new. so didn't feel the need to change the main bearings too.
You did well to find the ball bearing!

That gudgeon pin went into place remarkably easy. On other vehicles ( old) I've had to soak the piston in hot water in order to insert the pin.

It wasn’t that easy, had to get it bang central, also they shouldn’t be that tight as they need a coat of oil round it permanently when running.
