    Fantastic job on this episode Zygrene. You really did my little car proud. I know I was firing thoughts in all directions, so it's impressive how you were able to edit it down into such a polished statement. One day I'd like to get you behind the wheel of this car on a track, so you can safely experience the outer limits of it's handling. That's a whole other level of "Oh My God" It was a pleasure doing this, and if anyone has a special car they'd like to publicize a little, I HIGHLY recommend contacting Zygrene. It's no act, he really is that easygoing and down to earth.

    this sounds perfect since im hoping to at some point build a pretty awesome datsun cherry x1r to trump all these badass 510 and other lightweight cars ive been seeing online hopefully to do rally/hillclimb/togue/time attack or something along those lines

    Cool dude. Good taste with the build. Sr20 with a 30 series is enough to have fun and get you in trouble. Digging the carbon bumper and splitter. Nice corbeaus, cage, etc. Definitely a sweet 510.

    So I had a 1970 510 bought in 1973 while a Navy photographer at NAS Pt Mugu, from Hughs Datsun in Ventura for $1400 w 40 K miles. My grandmother and uncle both had Retinitis Pigmentosa- missed that personal experience. 1977 went to France for Cinema school in Paris but had to take more french in Angers France, when I returned summer of 77 my Datsun had already installed a L20B engine, while I was away. What a ride at he time - Lowered W hard Konis and beat hell out of BMWs. In 1981 I drove it to NJ from Silicon Valley my home. But I came back via plane in Feb '82; It never returned and the poor car stayed at my dad & grandparents house in the driveway for several years eaten away- to where it locked up- He supposedly 'gave it away' since I could not afford to visit and fix it. I was a commercial & editorial photog. Now vid/dig

    It's amazing to hear all the intersections of car, profession, living in the Bay Area, and RP circumstance. I bet you saw some insane munitions demos there at Pt. Mugu. My uncle was in the Green Barets in country back then. LOVED beating the hell out of BMW 320is back in San Diego in the 80s. Felt like John Morton all over again.

    I had several 510s in my college days and loved it. Its nostalgic now. But I forget it has no power steering, no power brakes, no ac. Not sure at my age now if I would enjoy it as much as when I was a young man. I now own 2 bmw 128i. These cars are reminiscent of the 510, alfa gtv, or the bmw 2002, except with some creature comfort of power brakes, power steering, and ac. Thanks for the well done video. It was fun going down memory road with this classic 510.

    as full around build goes def however as far as just straight swaps are considered idk i think ive seen some ones to trump this though i wish the cars from datsun/nissan like these models would get a little more love/respect so they could get some serious aftermarket like the toyota corolla or ls engines i mean hell this lineup gives you alot of cars such as the nissan cherry/100a the 310 510 610 710 and i guess the 810 was alright and these are just scratching the surface since nissan/datsuns and cars like these made inspiration for other famous nissans such as the skyline lineup and the 240z i mean hell the kenmari gtr looks almost exactly like the x1r cherry and at least the cherry got to race

    Always loved the 510. Something so beautiful in its simplicity, ditto the 2002. I recall my Moms neighbour ,a younger Mom had one, pretty much stock but I think it had Webber carbs but pretty plain stock otherwise and I wanted it so bad. This was 1990 and they were already sought after and seemed much rarer than the Z series. Must be like driving a go cart weighing so little.

    Although I'd like to take credit, you can actually get Carbon Fiber bumpers at Futofab dot com. It's a great way of shedding 60lbs off the car. They literally weigh less than a pound. Much of the front end on this 510 is either CF or fiberglass. keeping as close to 50/50 weight distribution was important.

    Just a suggestion. I am an avid old jdm car enthusiast and i have noticed that alot of youtube reviewers make heaps of comments about heavy steering, noise and suspension feel. In relation to new cars these things are all true. However, when you learn to drive these cars you realise they turn SO well and instead of feeling vague they feel like nothing else. You know exactly what is going to happen always. I highly recomend if not building or buying your own oldschool jdm car driving a bunch more (maybe a friends or youtube fan) so you get more used to them because making new car old car comparisons is sort of pointless and it could really improve oyur reviews of old cars because you would understand the characteristics that are more important to talk about for old car enthusiest viewers. cheers!

    Declan, You are right on the money with respect to "old cars" being a very different driving experience. It is a much more tactile connected feel. I was really shocked when Matt Farah from TUNED drove an SR swapped 510 and described it as being darty over bumps and camber shifts. He didn't even know that it was bump steer he was talking about. It's a very common issue when lowering the Macpherson Struts front suspension. It can be corrected in the 510 by raise the steering arms, control arm pivot points on the cross member and adding T/C rod spacers. It also helps to rake the caster up to 22 degrees or more. I was lucky to find a Troy Ermish built Cassis that had all of this already done, because it's one thing to install these goodies, but a whole other thing tuning it to work right.

    Yeah mate, it's no different here in Australia. My take on the problem is the 'too theory based driving test' combined with a 15 minute practical test. We need to introduce a advanced driving course as the minimum pass to drive and have a total 0 limit with alcohol. Then with the money saved on road tolls, perhaps the savings can go into better roads. Also, I wasn't having a go at the USA, too be honest, I didn't even think about where the video came from. I just saw the Dato, (datsun) and as we have plenty here, kind of assumed it was from here! Also didn't realise you guys got the 1970's rotary powered RX3 coupe, a truly monstrous car which took plenty of lives here back in the day. Got to love the KA24's torque on demand. I have mixed feelings about putting tech like ABS on a 510. I respect that it can improve driver confidence and control, but to what end? For me, what makes driving my tweaked out 510 so much fun is feeling connected with everything. I'm afraid putting ABS in there would get in the way of that direct immediate sensation of my input passing through the car and onto the road. Modern sports cars are easy to drive, but they can't do that.

    @datsun510zen5

    @@funkyfurballs1078 Got it, no such kit available for the 510 yet. People have done it using scavenged parts from other car's standalone ABS, but the only viable ABS option for a 510 is very basic low tech and will not solve the kind of issues that BIG ph will surely cause. A hobbled together low tech ABS would only provide a false sense of security at best. Okay I'm bias but IM(not so)HO, the 510 is the greatest economy sport sedan ever built. And with its IRS, light weight, and available aftermarket support it's still a very competitive track car. That said with all the 510's racing success it's easy to forget it's a 50 year old car designed for "spirited" street driving with its 100 ph engine. It stands to reason that putting 300-400 hp in one would require upgrading the chassis 300-400% to control it. On this build my passion often outpaced reason and it's taken years to get this 510's chassis caught up to the engine I stuffed in it. Even with that kind of hp, the Willwood Big Break kit is more than powerful enough to stop a 2000lb 510. Learn how to use them though and I was outbraking a 2016 BMW M3. Dialing in a car's braking and handling requires hours in the seat modifying and tuning the chassis. Confidence comes from learning how to push the car's outer limits with respect. Early standalone ABS was nothing more than an anti-lock system designed for emergency braking application, not performance oriented driving. Modern ABS controls each break separately on all 4 corners, and that level of stability control capability is only one part of multiple control systems working together with data feedback points throughout the car, and all of it orchestrated by a powerful central processing unit. Obviously not an option to stuff all that in a Dime. Although a CPU can supplement confidence regardless of driver error, in all reality stability "control" puts the driver in the passenger seat.

    That particular Dime was a single owner car with dark maroon original paint when Troy Ermish racing got it. Once I got it in 2009, it was a rust free empty shell with a full roll cage and race chassis. Before me, it had another brief owner who painted it gray silver, and the grill bright fluorescent green, but it had nothing else on it. I stripped the paint, smooth coated and sanded the body and had it sprayed the color it is now. I sourced or made everything else on the car, and powder coated all the trim black. I’m imagining the action of the “Trail through steering” of the rear suspension is a bit akin to the action of skateboard 🛹 trucks. Am I right? Can someone elaborate on this?

  • @Datsun510zen

    @Datsun510zen

    5 жыл бұрын

    You hit the nail on the head Alias. Not quite as much rear steer as a skateboard, but the same tilt steer principle. The pivot axis of the 510's "semi trailing arm" IRA (independent rear suspension) has an outward angle of about 18 degrees. This outward pivot angle is key to the passive rear steering known as "trail through. When the rear suspension is in its flat neutral position the wheel hubs are at 90 degrees to the axle and have zero toe (not pointing right left). During body roll in corners, the outside trailing arm is compressed upward and the inside trailing arm extends downward. Due to the angle of the arm's pivot axis, this up or down movement of the arms introduces a toe shift at the hub essentially steering the back of the car around the corner. Not just that, but the rear tires are kept flat to the ground due to the camber shift created by the angled pivot axis. For its time, the 510's little 1.6L SOHC 4 cylinder with a super light mono cock body and trail through IRS was considered voodoo shit. Having that slight rear steering is greater for low speed handling and accelerating early out of corners. This gave the stock 510 a huge advantage for street bombing and autocross, but hard high speed cornering (80 mph+), or more that 120 hp it has it's drawbacks. Simple things like lowering the 510 can create serious problems if not done right. For most guys race prepping 510s we run super stiff rear suspension and a fat roll bar to eliminate the trail through all together.

    Actually Matt Farah drove Rick O-Donnell's wide body SR swapped 510, and although he had more time behind the wheel, and a much wider open view road, he came nowhere near that car's capability. Give Zygrene some credit for sharing his experience of that car, and constructing a well told story. I give him credit, because a light little car with that kind of power is intimidating enough, but I was in the car with him. He knew had he scrubbed it off into a tree, his video would have been used to convict me of murder. ; ) Guys like Matt Farah and Zygrene are smart enough not to push a custom built car too far. Especially one they didn't build themselves. No two SR swapped 510s are alike, and Mine is set up for a specific style of driving. Matt mentioned Ricks 510 as being twitchy over bumps. It was "bump steer" he was describing, common to lowering a non power steering MacPherson front suspensions. Rick may have his caster set steeper for a lighter wheel feel while sacrificing some stability. There are tons of modifications that go into a car like this and an infinite number of configurations and adjustments to set up and dial in the car's handling. Then there's the motor set up and tuning that REALLY influences drivability. Zygrene spent less than a 1/2 hour behind the wheel of my car, and I can tell you from experience, that thing takes a while to get used to.

    This car will never be "finished". Going into it, overkill was the plan so we could push further without having to replace any of the peripherals. At this point It's an ongoing process of refinement and adjusting with plenty of room for growth at our fingertips. We started with a mild 10psi tune, and to be honest, it took us a while to work out the chassis setup and smoothing the boost curve before we were ready to run e85 at 15psi. Now at 300rwhp we are well beyond the usable power rage for autocross. The trick has been making that much power accessible and controllable at the peddle. We chose an asymmetric 3071 setup with a .63 A/R, Turbine-Wheel: 60mm w/ 84 trim, Compressor-Wheel: 71mm w/ 56 trim on our GT3071r knowing we would be sacrificing top end to gaining quicker spool up. But if the bug bits, we can push a second switchable tune into the 20psi 400 rwhp rage without replacing anything but the cam. This is all possible by making these choices at the beginning.

    Seriously? NO janky crap Tom. After lowering the front suspension Troy Ermish Racing uses modified adjustable steering arms matched to modified raised pivot points on the cross member to correct bump steer. The 510's steering is quick to begin with, but add 7" sticky ass race tires and raked caster the steering gets ridiculously heavy. It would be stupid to use shorter knuckles for an even heavier wheel. sorry

    i;m sorry if you've never heard of parking lot events like autocross or gymkhana....then i guess i don't have to ask if you've ever crewed or participated in one against a super 7 or monster miata. now how many datsuns have you built? ever tried to set up a road racing SRL311 (D production) or a GT2 510/610 to go against a fast car? you actually have to follow rules and use stock motor- stuff like that. people like you come in to our dealership parts counter and try to rewrite the formulas nissan and other motor manufacturers put MILLIONS into R & D for... and they al usually end up being back-markers.

    Scary. Get some seat time in a rental or your own high horsepower car before flogging someone's pride and joy.
