Fully Autonomous Weapon Systems - The technology, capability and controversy of robots at war

Sponsored by: Private Internet Access: www.piavpn.com/Perun
For all the changes we've seen in weapon systems, the role of humans as the key decision makers when it comes to the use of force has remained.
But what happens when machines develop to the point where they are increasingly able to perceive the battlefield and make that decision for themselves.
As the AI rush plays out, compute becomes cheaper and battlefield pressures play out, nations may face increasing pressure to unleash autonomous systems from their human handlers. So in this episode we discuss the potential of these systems, some of the advantages and pressures that might drive their development...and what the prospect for international regulation might be before the killer robots start to take the field in significant numbers.

Sponsored by Private Internet Access, Use the following link to access their promotional offer: www.piavpn.com/Perun After a few weeks off sick I'm obviously still sounding a bit rough, but it feels great to be back with another release. Next week I'm hoping we'll be back to normal in terms of schedule and sound, and hopefully looking at many of the events in Ukraine that I've missed over the last few weeks. Thanks for enduring the delay, hopefully there isn't another one like it again soon!

Was once the human half of a scout dog team walking point. It had an excellent sensor package, while I transported food, water, and a gun. And translated from this self ambulatory sensor to the following grunts loaded with things that go bang. This however linked to an officer. Not all of which were competent. Oh! Had to deal with these issues in real time situations. Was delighted to exit relatively undamaged. An interesting time. Remember it well. Still keep close company with a Mark 1 dog!

When I looked at the state of technology a few years ago I predicted the next major war would begin 90% human 10% Robot and end 90% robot 10% human. Tiny flying drones might make that even more skewed towards robots though, I didn't see that one coming.

@@jintsuubest9331I suspect that the fear of LAWS has a lot to do with their use outside of areas where a human decision-maker has chosen to make a no-man's-land. A drone whose operator can choose between "return home" and "strike best target visible from current position" fallback modes in case of radio interference isn't particularly scary. A drone with a 6k nm range and the authority to attack any enemy target it encounters across the entire battlefield is terrifying. And that suggests that the real fear isn't automation as such, but rather the absence of sufficient hard guardrails to limit the danger of a rogue AI.
