Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood VS Manga | Comparing the FMA Manga and Anime

Фильм және анимация

The next part in my FMA VS FMAB series is here. Finally. This time it's Brotherhood vs manga. That's right. Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 is nowhere to be found. Don't worry though. Actually, I haven't talked about 2003 for a while, since this is 2 videos in a row now that don't involve 2003 at all. That's all right though. It got a lot of attention in the earlier parts. And it'll be back soon enough.

Fun fact! Envy being a dog was likely due to the fact that horses are one of, if not the most difficult animals to animate. Notoriously do in fact. You'd never guess from the amount of horsegirl shoes how difficult they are because they take either an insane amount of skill or simplification (no harm in it!) Dogs on the other hand are very easy! At least in comparison. So its probably a lot easier to find someone who can make a dog look good as opposed to a horse.

thank you for mentioning the voice acting in the Mustang vs Envy scene. there's this one PHENOMENAL moment of perfect marriage between VA and animation. the cut where Mustang goes to snap again, but it's like his hand has tensed up so much from anger that his fingers, for a solid swing of motion are just locked together, tenser than a bow-string. and Travis Willingham in the dub matches this with this impeccable growl that pitches into this almost feral crack leap in pitch , his voice cracking with pure emotion, just before he finally snaps again. it's utterly incredible

Knowing that there was a scene in the manga where Hohenheim passed away and returned to the remains of his house where he finally met up with Trisha, and they spoke a bit about how proud they were of their sons’ and how their job looking after them was done, makes me wish we had some of that extra finality with Trisha and Hohenheim at the end. It’s just so sweet and feels so nice to see Hohenheim finally able to be with his wife again.

I feel the same way after reading the manga. I questioned why so many scenes were omitted but at the same time felt that Brotherhood had amazing delivery on the scenes it adapted. I think without seeing the manga prior, Brotherhood is amazing but I can understand why some people feel the adaptation is an injustice to the series. Personally, I prefer the manga. Despite that, I still love the story from both mediums.

Honestly I'd be more forgiving to Brotherhood's shortcomings if it wasn't touted as "the greatest anime ever made" constantly, to the point that its fans on MAL will score every show that surpasses it or comes close to surpassing it a 1/10 in an attempt to keep it at the top. The parts it does well it does very well, but even before reading the manga or watching 03 I got the impression something was missing from Brotherhood and I only really got that when I read the manga. No show should have such a reputation, it just leads me to having very high expectations and being disappointed when they aren't met.

And I’m pretty sure Parasyte is seinen and I think it’s one of the dumbest things I’ve seen. So I just go by whatever genre Japan considers it to be.

@@haosmagnaingram6992 I guess I agree with that too. FMA 2003 really changed the game for shonen anime. All shonens previously had similar tones that felt fight oriented, “badass”, and formulaic except for Trigun. But I don’t think Trigun was very popular when it first came out. FMA03 proved that you could be popular without having the same tone of a traditional shonen. Then followed Samurai Champloo, Death Note, Code Geass, and later on we got Attack on Titan, Mob Psycho 100, etc. It’s like FMA03 created a brand new style of shonen anime, or at least popularized it. When people ask me if I like shonen anime I never know what to say. Because I pretty much hate every traditional style shonen whereas I love the “new” style shonens. My favorite traditional shonen is probably Hunter x Hunter and I’d give that like a 7/10 lol. Though I feel the 1999 version of HxH is like halfway in between something like Dragon Ball and something like FMA03. No doubt that series also helped in the new variety of tones for shonen anime.

In my opinion, episode 27 is the best recap episode I’ve ever seen in any anime. It works as a good reminder of what happened (as recaps do), but it also explores the significance of all the events it covers. And it’s executed in such a creative manner because it also manages to expand upon hoenheim’s character simultaneously. That is how you should make a recap episode if you choose to include one. I found this one episode so intriguing because recap episodes are usually trash. The only other recap episode in existence that I remember enjoying was the one in evangelion. But that was mostly because it moved hella quickly with some neat presentation and it only spanned half of the episode.

Part of the reason Brotherhood has a better reputation as an adaptation than it probably deserves is because, honestly, a lot of the stuff cut isn't super obvious or detrimental to anyone who never read the manga. You rarely get the sense anything is truly missing, outside of when it's very blatant like with the mining town where the show basically goes "hey remember this thing that totally happened but we just didn't show it". But I would guess 90-95% of the time, people who haven't read the manga will have no idea and I think that's a testament to the fact that on some level, they knew what they were doing. There are definitely adaptations where even as an anime-only you can kinda tell they're rushing something, or that something was probably cut or swapped around. With Brotherhood, which I watched first, I almost never felt that. Whether any of that matters in regards to judging it as an adaptation is a matter of opinion, I guess it kinda depends on what you value in an adaptation. But I think it's worth mentioning.

  • @TheSoulCrisis

    @TheSoulCrisis

This is an excellent observation.....for example I watched the 2003 version when it came out but never read the manga (I might have one or two volumes at most). Many people compared all versions with the manga version having the full details and context, which is what I wanted for the adaptation but they skipped out on certain details that doesn't benefit the story or characters by doing so (yet they are not huge blunders that it detracts entirely, it's more like a neutral change that doesn't effect too many things). Still those details are great for having as it fleshes the story and characters out more, but it's unlike the massive and jarring changes that 2003 implemented when it ran off the rails from the source material that made little sense onwards to major consequences in the plot and characterization. I hated how Brotherhood removed the mining town mini arc because I don't want studios skipping small arcs or details just because it has a previous version already, I want adaptations done right with the understanding of why those small segments and details matter. They should know how it affects, changes, or builds up plot elements and characters later on. I also admit it bothered me more because I already knew about it, I imagine time and budget constraints forced their hand in these instances. We know anime production cycles are rough as hell, but I have to give them props for cutting out the smaller details that would least negatively impact the story and characters. In a story the small details build up to the big ones.....so while every detail has some meaning at least they made the best choices under their circumstances and production cycle. If they had all the time and budget in the world I'm sure we would have gotten a perfect anime adaptation, often those above them won't allow it. One thing I always agree with is the 2003 version has superior opening and ending themes, along with a superior soundtrack and truly intense and dark emotional scenes that really suck you into a character's despair. It is often mentioned that Brotherhood doesn't match the heights of these emotional and dark tones in some instances (from voice acting to background music). If you combined the best parts of 2003 with Brotherhood I think you'd get that perfect anime, so it's still great to have both interpretations as it gives us insight into where each falls short versus just having one interpretation. I at least always count the small details when evaluating adaptations, it shows how passionate and committed the team was to preserving the original vision and substance of the body of work (with the understanding that realistically they sometimes need to make adjustments or cut things due to time and budget constraints).

The writers wanted to focus on the later stuff which may have been unofficially/unconsciously influenced by their previous work on 2003 but it wasn’t something used as an excuse (at the very least not openly)

I personally only thought it was terrible in like the first 10 episodes (which weren’t great anyway). After that, the jokes become less abundant and more funny. Like when Ed and Al get to Briggs and they got assigned to knock down the icicles but Ed couldn’t reach them. I thought that was funny. Or when Winry goes in her room to relax and she starts undressing only to see that Ed is just in there watching her while stuffing his face with a sandwich. I thought both of those jokes were funny and well timed. And the humor gets pretty rare in the second half of the series which I thought was very fitting for the increasingly serious mood.

Ishbalan war should've been an entire OVA or a short movie of its own. I will sound like an elitist/manga purist but I really hate what Brotherhood did to it. Armstrong letting go of those Ishbalans, only to be killed by Kimblee, was the most scarring scene in the manga in my opinion. And yes there's also Hawkeye. There were so many details about her and Roy's past that brotherhood didn't find important. Her fear of her father, the more accurate scene of her father's death and the conversations in front of the grave, longer conversation with Roy about self-deception, the emphasis of watching each other's back. So, so many rich, tragic details that have been omitted, yet the stupid episode 30 ending where May Chang falls for her idea of Alphonse was given screentime? It wasn't even in the same volume as the Ishbalan war. I love FMA but that was one of the stupidest decisions in the series.

Which is really unfortunate, and even tho I get it, it’s pretty backwards to assume that the 2003 is expected to be seen first. The anime will always be second to the manga in Japan, and western audiences don’t really understand that because we see comics as lesser to filmmaking.

I still prefer FMA 2003's much darker overall story. how it ties in with the core of the show and the saying that Edward uses so often "equivalent exchange, all throughout 2003 have one on one fights with very little huge shonen battle anime moments and the one on one fights were always more engaging. 2003 feels beginning to end like the same show that had a girls dad fuse her with a dog and then a revenge hungry serial killed out out of a twisted yet somewhat sympathetic sense of mercy. I know this video isn't about 2003 but I wish people would stop recommending brotherhood over 2003 there missing the strong beginning that hooks you into it.

I don't wanna be a jerk but the way Lowart describes the depth of FMAB characters, well it doesn't really sound all that deep. Good is good, bad is bad, trauma is traumatic. Selfishness vs. friendship. It kinda reminds me of a certain scene from Thumb Wars: "You are bad! You are bad and we are good! Your badness will be the end of you, and our goodness will be our triumph! Bad is bad - good is good! Bad-bad-good-bad! Good-good-bad-good, bad! Good."

I really love the 3 versions, but there's one scene in brotherhood that I could never get behind. The truth about Hughes, in the manga, when Ed, Al and Winry ask Mustang about Hughes, he looks at them with such anguish, sadness and even desperation, in one look you can see all these emotions, all of his pain, but in the anime, this entire event is totally rushed, and Winry isn't even there, she's already at Hughe's house.

One change I'd like to mention is regarding Alex and Sig teaming up against sloth. In the anime, they met for the first time in this scene, whereas in the manga, they had already met during the Greed arc and became fast friends. When this scene happens in the manga, it's a reunion between two friends and Alex gets motivated by Sig's words to "Stand up" and their teamwork wrecks Sloth and it's the greatest scene ever and I LOVE IT!!! In the anime though, it looked like Alex got motivated because... he has a hard on for muscles? (I mean, he probably does, but...) Yeah, you can see I'm not fond of that change.

Another change was that I'm the manga, father was able to flex longer after he achieved his full powered form. In the anime, the reversal happens almost immediately so there is no time to take in what has just happened. Maybe there was an episode limit, but I think they couldve extended that episode showing father's skills and then have the heros resolve it by using the counter measure.

Great video, I think you have improved a lot and I am glad to see that you are receiving more views. I agree with most of the negatives, like for example: about how brief and short it was the treatment of the ishvalan war, considering the gigantic impact that it had on the plot... although i dont think its rushed at all, at least in terms of pacing, it's more like the manga has some details that add more layers to the conflict and character progressions, but overall i think the did a find job. Or about the training with izumi or the yoki incident. But i think most of the other complais are really irrelevant or well too small to be really significant, so yeah even if you count them as nitpicking, there are really quite pointless. ( So i do not count them as flaw or things that affect the plot or narrative in a significant way) But i really agreed with the positive points; especially about the the recap episodes and the character of van hohenheim in brotherhood... At least for me his death moves me a lot, because; it is not only seeing a father dying in front of the grave of his own wife, but also seeing a man who has lived through various tragedies throughout his life, accepting that he had a life full of happiness. And that it was thanks to his family that made his life have a real purpose and meaning. Being able to see value in his life even knowing that he was going to lose what he loved the most and giving thanks for having had the blessing of having lived such a fulfilling life, dying with the " biggest smile he had in his life ". al's So overall i think brotherhood it's not a perfect but a pretty good adaptation of probably one of the greatest stories ever told. So... what is your favorite thing about the manga and brotherhood overall? and what are your thoughts on the animacion/ art of the series?

Love this video, and agree on all of the points you make (I wrote a looong rant about Ishval a while ago because they really screwed that up). However, the ending of Brotherhood was a little bit rushed in my opinion. The manga showed more aftermath of the battle, helping the wounded, a bit more closure for some characters like Fu and Buccaneer. There's a couple of changes I'm surprised you didn't touch on: 1) In the manga, when Ed yells at Hohenheim and calls him a useless father, Hohenheim smiles and is happy that Ed finally called him Dad. In Brotherhood he just apologises sadly. I was sad to see this cut because it was a nice rounding off to Hohenheim and Ed's relationship. 2) After the final fight, still on the battlefield, Mustang is talking to Dr Knox about his eyesight. He talks about the irony and how he accepts that it's lost forever. He gives up on his dream of becoming Fuhrer but states that there's still plenty he can do for his country. That's when Marcoh steps in with the philosopher's stone. A small change but one that I personally like, as it shows Roy accepting his blindness but is a bit more of a sombre scene than Brotherhood's jump straight to optimism. 3) At the same time, Lan Fan sees Dr Knox talking to Mustang and remembers his words about not wanting to see kids fighting one another. She immediately speaks to Ling and asks him to protect the smaller rival clans when he becomes emperor, to which he agrees and goes and speaks to May. In Brotherhood this was cut, and Ling approached May on his own with this decision. There's also a small scene of Lan Fan saying goodbye to Fu. 4) The scene with Ed and Winry at the train station has a different tone. In the manga Ed is excited about travelling west, and there's a bit of back-and-forth banter between them about Ed's automail. In Brotherhood they made Ed really sulky and passive in this scene, which I found really weird. I get that it's because he was nervous about proposing to Winry, but it seemed very gloomy somehow. Anyway, always love to see your FMA videos! I'm glad that I'm not the only one who finds fault in FMAB as an adaptation.

20:22 Actually, I tend to blend media often. I love to see what people do with ideas when done well and recognize the flaws of both old and new. I mix *gasp* dub and sub regularly, I love the English (it's the male leads VA in the og that killed that) Kare Kano and finish it off with the more serious manga at the Asimov based play. I love the original Secret Garden Especially the Red Fox Garnett reading on youtube) and the 90's movie as each brought important, thought provoking aspects. I love Every Pride and Prejudice version and will someday do comparisons like this on those myself (Very long time, don't go looking or anything), even the terrible musical which oddly has my favorite version of Darcy as the music opens up his inner workings and gets you to like him earlier. Why they made Mary a nun and Liz Jo March if she were also Scrooge, no idea, but the songs of Ms Bingley's letters were priceless. I survived Vampire Knight by mixing dub/sub and manga as there was just enough depth in the mix as it felt like a metaphor for the dangerous world of sexual abuse amongst the great stupidity and unhealthy messaging. Looking at different versions broadens the horizons and I generally recommend it, barring a total lack of respect for the source material and those are obvious. It's not that I hate the netflix "death note" movie; if they had called it Heather's Final Note and we could sit back and enjoy the bizarre combination of Heather's, Final Destination with a few Death Note story ideas, that would have been cool and clearly what the creator wanted to make, but that would mean licensing three movies, admitting that's what they wanted to do all along and they couldn't ride the coat tails of a superior work nearly as easily. No respect at all, they wanted the name and a few cool aspects, not the wealth of ideas. Anywho, generally good to take the time to look at all the versions in my book.

Anime watchers enjoyed FMA:B as it is, does it really need it? Other then Manga readers complaining about it there isnt a large enough outcry to justify a reremake. So its doubtful unless a larger group of people complain and demand of it.

I have a lot of the same thoughts about the stuff you brought up. I really can’t say which I prefer because it depends; on the one hand there are a lot of little moments in the manga that really flesh out the world and characters, plus the Ishval flashbacks are 100% better done in the manga and it honestly feels cowardly on the anime’s part to shy away from the depth of the war crimes presented in the manga. But on the other hand there are scenes like Lust’s death, Mustang vs Envy, and pretty much all the Promised Day battles which while the manga art is great are so, so much more impactful with motion and sound. In particular Mustang’s beatdown of Envy and the scene after that where everyone has to convince him to let go and then Envy’s true core character is revealed is so much better and more emotionally impactful in Brotherhood, especially the dub. Mustang and Envy’s VAs really carried that scene. It’s still good in the manga, but with the knowledge of how Brotherhood does it, even though it’s essentially the same scene it just has so much more emotional impact in the anime. So yeah, like you said, the manga is better in the first half mostly and Brotherhood is better in the second half. They’re both still amazing, and I feel like consuming both gives me a fuller picture. Great video; I love how you edit the manga panels! Edit: oh also! You talked about how the recap episode helped characterize Hohenheim but it also presents one of the main themes of the story - that people are capable of love and change, and I feel like that episode really gets to the core of both Hohenheim and the story as a whole despite also being a recap. It’s good!!

EXACLTY!! But it's already done so many things right when portraying the manga, despite the removal of things.

The one omission that wasn't mentioned was after Al gets his body back and the armor that was old body is returned and melted for automail.

That’s a nice detail, but honestly it’s something that’s not really necessary

This was a great video and accurately summed up how I also feel about Brotherhood as an anime (despite it being my favorite anime)! I think a huge reason why most of its fault was with early plot (earlier episodes, the war in ishval, etc.) is because these were plot points consistent in the 2003 anime, and Funimation might have been worried that if it spent too much time on parts of the plot many fans had already seen, it would feel repetitive and boring for 2003 fans watching brotherhood. Ultimately I think it was a relatively poor on their end to rush the first half of the anime (if this even is the reason), because it not only underestimated the willingness of existing fans to watch something familiar, but it also neglected new fans watching brotherhood who had never seen the 2003 anime. But it’s like you said; the latter part of the anime is just so unbelievably perfect and more than makes up for the slow-yet-underdeveloped issues from the first part of the series I think the ONLY other major issue I had was how the soundtrack and selected scenes basically screamed “King Bradley is a villain” in the beginning of brotherhood. When I read the manga, there were no ominous pieces playing to his dialogue and scenes, so while you knew there was something suspicious about the military, you could never tell if Bradley was part of the conspiracy (which made the Volume 7 reveal that much more impactful). But honestly, his character was the only one that I felt was a little disserviced in brotherhood, so I can’t complain too much

Firstly funimation has absolutely nothing to do with anything regarding the production of anime outside of dubbing and distribution. Second a lot of the lengthy cuts are because it’s been documented that The director of Brotherhood didn’t get the episode count he wanted having to fight for extra episodes he only managed to get due to the proven success from the 2003 adaptation. What’s more likely is they utilized the existence of the 2003 adaptation to decide where things would get cuts because without more episodes they needed cuts, and ishval was cut as it was flashbacks so while it built lots of characterization it wasn’t necessary to get the plot in motion. Brotherhood also just feels more rushed than the manga in those early parts because the directing in a lot of those episodes was some of the worst in the series and the focused too much of their time on jokes. The liore episode is especially bad in Brotherhood.
