The blisteringly cruel irony of this scene got me. In one scene, Edward is reaffirming his belief in his brother's humanity in the face of two serial murderers, while only a few meters a way, Al is doubting himself and Ed. Simply amazing.

Everytime I watch this scene I think about how Al is just a kid. And we always have THAT moment when kids when we doubt if our parents are really our parents and we were not adopted. I used to lie that shit to my brother for pure evilness (some kids are the worst) so I could get his reaction. I liek to compare this situation to what the little kid in a big armor is passing through.

It's a beautiful scene but most kids don't have some fear they were adopted.

This is such a great moment because now Al questioning his existence can only be affirmed by him completing his quest to get his body back. By any means I can think of, Al doesn't have anything to go on if the assumption is his memories are all fabricated by Ed. The catch here is that Al at some point remembers something Ed didn't know about, so Al can say that maybe the memories are truly real, but even then he can backpedal and say Ed was lying to coax that feeling into him. Heavy.

Agree That's only in the manga/Brotherhood that Ed doesn't remember something Al does thought 🤔 These clips are from the 2003 anime, and in this version, Al is the one with memories problem since he has trouble remembering some of his past like other friends he has...

It's a good use of psychological warfare for Barry to play with Al's mind by offering him the idea that maybe he's not real, just an imitation created by Ed. But it's also an interesting moment, because Al has no confidence in his own existence, because any record of who he was before his soul was attached to that armor is a blur, a blank, and as he grows older his memories become more and more blurry. He has no way of proving that he was actually a real person other than Ed and Winry telling him stories of his life, but how can he know for a fact that any of what they're telling him is true and not some story they created to get him on their side. It may be psychological warfare, but its an important thing to ask when you really think about it. And that's why I love FMA '03, because it genuinely asks questions of the nature of reality and identity.

This is the first time this song is played in the series I think.. This scene was amazing when first I saw it..

2:04 i feel the “anger” and and coldness Al feels towards Ed was him trying to see if he COULD feel negative emotions towards him, or if this guy was right

this is funny, most of the comments are saying Barry is lying to al, have any of you even thought he's offering a different perspective? something to think about? even if he's trying to get to him, he may not be lying because his soul was transferred and brainwashed into helping the enemy instead of satisfying his own needs

I mean, maybe Barry could actually tought that, but Alphonse had other people besides Edward to tell that he existed before the transmutation (Like Winry and Pinaco). So unless absolutly every one that knew him from the past was lying, the only chance of him beign a artificial soul would be if either Edward in his grief created a fake Alphonse or transmuted a false Alphonse by mistake.

Technically, Barry doesn't need the reassurance that he's a human being. As he says later on, the only thing that matter to him is his identity as a killer. He doesn't care if he's fake or real, the only thing that he wants or even needs to know is he's a killer. That's the essence of his psychotic nature.

I admit is compelling enough to make you Think, but at the same time is coming from a psycopath so...

Even though the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime is the least loved of the two mostly cause it diverges from the manga, you have to admit there were amazing and heavy parts like this throughout it

The whole time I was watching him I was like " don't you dare let him get to you al! You're better than that! He's lying to you why would your brother ever lie to you?. He loves and cares about you more than your own mother. If he didn't, do you really think he would put himself in danger?"

How exactly would an alchemist go about fabricating memories anyway? Even if there was somehow a way to do that, creating a whole past with vivid, convincing memories probably would have been really meticulous work that Ed wouldn't have had time for since, when he was attaching Al's soul to the armor, he was kinda bleeding to death from his fresh arm and leg stumps.

Don't know... But arcoding To Tucker, it's possible 🤔 (In case you don't remember, in Fma 2003, Tucker is still alive, works in labotary 5, tries To bring Nina back and became a chamera. In episode 22, there's a moment were he talks about making fake memories)

The thing that always bothered me about Al’s doubts is that if he just thought about it he should realize it’s not true. Why would Ed let Scar kill him on the promise of Sparing Al if Al was just some constructed servant?

I feel like this is how I argue about my waifu loving me.
