Going into this event Mac Neil was weirdly ignored by many international commentators even though she was the reigning World champion.

Mostly because she navigated the rounds very quietly going "only" 56 mid while some of the others were really announcing their presence with sub 56 swims. Ultimately there's no prizes for winning the rounds.

As her cousin, that is exactly what happened lol
MacNeil paces her 100 fly so intelligently which makes me wonder if Zhang would be better off being less aggressive in the first 50. She surely would be able to bring it home hard with her 200 fly strength.
The guy calling the race didn't even notice that MacNeil was winning - not very smart. And MacNeil was world champion, but they didn't seem too interested in talking about her.
been waiting for this one!!! her reaction is gold !!!

Zhang Yufei has such beautiful smile.
McNeil‘s sprint endurance is unreal So explosive She’s got high turnover and able to beat other swimmers in the touch while the other swimmers are still mid-stroke. She has done this in other races. It’s not by luck.
Maggie adorable person! Her reaction and her win: Gold twice! 💟 ✌😊...
why winning of any individual from any country gives me goosebumps. I think thats the beauty of this event
Emma McKeon beating Torri Huske by 0.01 gives me vibes from the Atlanta 1996 final in this event.
What a reaction: 'Oh my God!'
Congrats ladies!
What a race!!!
Maggie MacNeil is my cousin. It's insanely cool to me how talented she is. I'm a lower level varsity Swimmer, and I admire her so much. Unfortunately I don't share any swimming genes with her because she's adopted lol, and she's my 2nd cousin, but I still think it's very cool. Edit: also she didnt realize she had won at first because she didnt have contacts in. As someone who wears contacts, I dont understand how she swims without them.
Maggie's underwater is insane.

When competition reached last 25 meters everyone thought USA Torri Huske would take the gold as she was still leading ! Who knew that the no 7 for 1st half, the Canadian could win the race! Quite shocking overturn!
Please make more of these! I’d like to see men’s 400 IM or men’s 800 free!

❤ i was in the 25 yrd pool today swimming timed lengths and splits, and these ladies are insane. i cant even imagine the times they are doing this in, as if the style and form is not enough. i cant freestyle (yes i know, im no olympian swimmer, but still. dang) the times they did this in. its absurd :)
You have to have mad respect for Sjostrom that she actually swam this race more or less out of respect for the new champion. She just wanted to be there.
Sarah Sjostrom did NOT win three gold medals in Rio. She won ONE gold, one silver and one bronze.

crazy that she was in first and ahead of the WR line with about 10-15 meters remaining, then out-touched for a medal by .01. Once she gets those down, watch out, she could be unstoppable. And this was only her 1st Olympics

If Macneil were made in China, and won this match, would some western media say something unfair, so please respect every result players win for themselves.

Makes you wonder if she grew up in China, would China’s National Swim Team identify her as a prospect? Not sure,….she’d have Parent’s who may or may not have been able to support her early swim passion, additionally, she doesn’t fit the China or any other country prototype….shortest one out there?!? Maggie had the passion to swim and win….all her and her supportive Parents and eventual Coaches.
