FULL VERSION 1997 - Rafter vs Agassi - US Open

Thank you for your gracious use of this classic match!
-------------------------------------------
PertSnergleman's Review:
-------------------------------------------
Genuine serve-and-volley players like Rafter, a dying but difficult breed, never used to bother Agassi much when he was in his heyday. He used them for target practice for his passing shots, which invariably lived up to their name.
But Agassi doesn't pack the same punch he used to, and while he's been off on his various sabbaticals, the rest of the tennis crowd, Rafter included, has started packing a harder punch. Agassi's down-the-line backhand passes fooled Rafter some of the time, but not often enough. And Rafter's smooth serve-volley formula did more than keep the former No. 1 on his toes, it kept him guessing.

I call BS , Got to the 4th round here , and had he won , all those “ battles “ , would be nothing , sorry , it is what it is , No one forces you to play , GS or not , he’s not the only one with the “ get out of jail card “? Steffi Graf , for years , every major she entered, was plagued with a “ nagging injury “ , yeah ok 👌🏼 Proves one thing These “ Professional “ Players , are really no different than some club players , with the BS excuses , I was in a locker room one time , and I heard this guy coming in saying he lost in a 3rd set tie break , then continued saying “ yeah , I just got over the flu “ Give me a F---G Break !!!! Play the match , you win or you lose . That’s It !!!!!! USTA 4.0 player - Benchmark 25 years

Total insane comment. Agassi has beaten better players then Rafter on countless number of times including Sampras. Rafter has 2 Slams. Agassi has 8. Not even close.

11:20 "Agassi looks uptight and nervous"...meth has a way of doing that... But for entertainment value, one of my favorite matches of all time. Rafter was such a beautiful serve-and-volley-work-so-hard-every-point player (that style burned him out fast); and Agassi just sicks back and wacks 'em...great stuff...thanks for posting...

This match was in the midst of one of the lowest points of Agassi's career. You can see he's out of shape and not able to go after difficult shots. He admitted to doing meth during this time and was fickle about his commitment to tennis. It's remarkable how good he was even at this time, given he was tanking his career. But his comeback in 1998-99 and latter half of his career is very inspiring.

Yes, because of Agassi being so "out of shape and not able to go after difficult shots" THAT'S the reason why he made it ALL THE WAY to the finals of the US Open in 97... he managed to win EVERY other match of the tourney before this one WHILE BEING SO OUT OF SHAPE... but ONLY HERE (in the final) did the "out of shape" come back to haunt him... my bullshit-ometer just exploded.

Rafter sounded like he’d have rather taken a Davis cup. Pay Cash argued that Rafter’s return of serve was not quite ideal for a really great grass court challenger. But, Rafter came so close twice. Maybe if his shoulder had held out a bit longer?
