Full-tilt jam with Polyend Tracker and Novation AFX Station

A live, semi-improvised track performed entirely on hardware.
It had been a while, and I just got a battery pack for USB gear, so I thought I'd take the Tracker for another spin. It turns out that the Tracker is one of those devices that I love more and more with every time I use it. Songwriting is getting faster on it, and its performance effects are my current favourite for getting wild with drum parts. Rearranging the sequence allows a level of complexity that you just can't get with a beat repeat! And the fact that you can then take those performance effects and apply them to other tracks instead makes the Tracker extremely flexible and fun for making jams.
I added the AFX Station at the last minute because I wanted something I could play notes on, and because I wanted something melodic to end the track. The AFX Station is just the right sound, size, and shape for a jam with the Tracker, and its filter and drive are (in my opinion) underrated. It may just be a Novation Bass Station II in disguise, but it's an awesome analog mono synth.
Polyend Tracker - Sequencing, sampling, sample player, effects
Novation AFX Station - Mono synth (running through the Tracker for reverb and delay)
Performed and recorded live to a stereo output, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

    This was as healing as all your other tracks, but still unique, you've never gotten repetitive. It's a walk down a road that I think we both needed, purely about the journey as with music there is no destination. I've been here this whole time, just too tired to comment. You're doing something beautiful here Jay, keep doing it, and thank you 🤍.

    Plus it should be worth mentioning that the Polyend Tracker’s midi sequencing abilities are good, Octatrack good to be precise (it can give the Elektron Octatrack a run for its money)

  • @ruscular
    @ruscular2 жыл бұрын

    I really love the Polyend Tracker and use it as a backing track to my wind synth instrument. I pretty much cant play anything else as well as I play my saxophone, and this construct of song and performance mode allow some flexibility of performance of the backing track. I have not tried piping the sound into the tracker, but use midi out. I like to try that on the older Yamaha pss480 synth. I bet this method could bring new life to the older synth.

    This is a timely video for me. Been going back and forth for a few months on a 'groove box' and I am leaning more towards this. Not going to lie, the tracker workflow seems intimidating but in terms of price, features and build quality (looking at you OP-Z), the Polyend Tracker seems like the sweetspot. ALSO... Kick ass and inspiring jam as per usual!

    Awesome jam! I ordered a used AFX station, it should arrive in a couple days. After that Im saving up for an SP404mk2 to pair it with. Im into hip hop so my plan is to make some beats and bounce it back and forth into my DJ software to add scratches and stuff, then maybe back into SP for effects!

  • @JayHosking

    @JayHosking

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes and no. You can timestretch it offline (in an editing menu), but it's fiddly and can't be done in the context of a song. It's not like the Octatrack, which can stretch in a song while changing pitch in real time.
