BRENTWOOD, Calif. (KABC) -- The driver accused of leading police on a wild chase that ended in a wrong-way crash on the 405 Freeway in the Brentwood area last week is facing 16 charges, prosecutors announced. Lisa Ann Heflin, 41, was charged Wednesday with 10 counts of assault upon a police officer, four counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count each of fleeing a pursuing officer while driving recklessly and hit-and-run resulting in property damage, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. Heflin pleaded not guilty to all charges on Wednesday. She is due back at the Airport Branch Courthouse on June 20, when a date will be set for a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence for her to stand trial. She remains jailed in lieu of $695,000.

Honestly police should have ended the chase/gotten far back in their cars when she started driving on the wrong side of the road/driving high speeds and driving erratically. Public safety should be paramount. The chopper could have absolutely kept on her whilst providing updates to the patrols as well as confirmation when it the patrols could safely swoop in and arrest her.

Plus I think I already answered what I “expect police to do” and that would be: Pull back and let the chopper follow her. Believe it or not… but this is the general policy for most police departments when there is a car chase and public safety is at risk. The moment the chase becomes dangerous, police pull back, get the chopper and when it is safe, move in to make their arrest.

I get that the cops were trying to PIT the van but the cop who stopped oncoming traffic drove out way of the van before it crashed head-on into that car. I’m not cop myself but you would have to think, “man this van is driving full speed into oncoming traffic, I’d rather risk it and put my vehicle in between the van and a car that might have little kids and parents in it”…. Idk just a thought

Hopefully they lock her up for a long time. At the same time, the cops also screwed up: 1. They need to learn how to do the pit maneuver right. You push sideways quickly to behind the rear tire with the front of your car, not slide along the side of the car/van. A proper medium (or high) speed pit will usually disable the vehicle when it rapidly spins out of control and crashes. 2. If they don't know how to pit and they have a chopper, call of the chase (almost all drivers will start driving normally if no one is chasing then) and pick the driver up when they stop driving.
