Does the safety also prevent the button from being accidentally pushed when the blade is out? What I mean do you also have to slide the safety down to push the button when you want to retract the blade?

@@SmokeRingsPipeDreams No. The lock only prevents accidental firings. Once the blade is open that plunge lock come up be never enough so that the lock engages again. That is because that plunge lock is now putting pressure on the blade in a specific way to isolate lockup and make it super tight.

Speaking about the edge, I got a Vespa ripper... Amazing knife... But it wouldn't cut a small cherry tomato... I was kinda pissed, so I used my Delica and it was fine... Later I checked the Vespa on my leg hairs, they literally fell off in a sweep, I couldn't even feel them get cut like usual... This tells me two things: 1: I can't sharpen as good as I thought I could, with the Lansky OR the sharpmaker. 2: a toothy edge might be better for kitchen work 🤷

That is the downside to a super polished refined edge. I prefer a slightly toothy edge as they just bite into various materials much better. You can push cut with a polished edge but slicing gets to be a slippery slope the higher you refine the edge. I usually take the ceramic rod I got with my apex and just lightly go over the edge with a couple swipes just to get some bite back into it.

Spring is different. The snick out of the real MT version significantly different. But I'll consider it.

Man the quality control is nice, is there a way to commission these guys for new designs? I'm a knifemaker.

starting to look into vespa knives a bit more, watching more and more of your vids its hilarious to see how much better they are at grinding knives, I don't know what it is but the last 3 knives I've gotten from microtech have been absolute shit in the grind department, the word symmetrical just doesn't exist over there apparently.

well. I know vespa invested in state of the art equipment. And they did that because they want to make the nicest product they can. We got that speech from MT a few years back but I think it was more about meeting demand rather than improving the quality.

Just bought the D2 version do you think it’s still going to be high-quality in the manufacturing part? I know the Steel is not gonna be better..etc

the actual execution of the machining and quality of materials is what differs. But usually a cheaper vespa is just as high quality as an expensive model regardless of materials.

I noticed something that's similar between yours and my Halo VI clone. That bottom right screw is coming loose. It's not quite flush. Try screwing it back down and tell me if the screw is stripped

I own several Vespa OTF . I would like to buy this knife to chinahighendedc but the problem there is not clip for the pocket .

@@jeffkodiac Even on microtechs they dont put pocket clips on halos. One the handle is longer than most peoples pockets are deep. And the design of the knife with the charging handle makes attaching a clip to the design very difficult. That is why they include a kydex sheath to attach to a belt. Its not what I would consider a practical EDC knife.

You know I have actually done this test before with this knife and never had a problem because I do use that knife but never made a video of it. Honestly this channel is probably dead man. The company who makes these products doesnt really have any contact with me any more. If I had actually ever seen any of evidence of what you are speaking of I would make the video. But I havent.

in this particular case I think any knife fan would have the same reaction if they had a open mind and they let the quality do the talking. Its the nicest OTF I think I have handled in the fit and finish department.

Gorgeous knife! I apologize in advance for hijacking this comment section real quick for an off topic question. A while back you posted a video of a knife done by Andy Xu. It was a beautiful Titanium OTF. I believe it was the A08. The knife is nowhere to be found and i have dreamed of it for so long now. From what i see now, it seems like Vesper is Andys new company and he scrapped the old one? or whats up? And how in the world can i get that knife! Please help

No. Andy is a piece of shit. He has nothing to do with Vespa. He is a liar and I stopped working with him because of his BS. I actually sold mine awhile back because I was so fed up with his crap. He no longer offers his knives for sale that I am aware. I believe he is doing commission work for knife companies but I cant be sure. I would love to have Ti handle knife. But Vespas aluminum offerings are better than his titanium products any day.

I got one from DH GATE that looks EXACTALLY like a Microtech Halo 6 for $50.00.

yes but those don't have as good of steel and simply aren't made as well. They may say they are using M390 but on those the markings are not accurate. I much prefer the semi custom look of the Vespa and I really don't like counterfeits that use the logos.

I just got one from wish too. Dude can swear all day long they're not as good but he's full of it. It's good steel, stays sharp, no blade play whatsoever and deploys with serious force. There is absolutely no reason to spend the kind of money these guys are trying to charge. Poor people deserve to defend themselves too.

@@jasonc1899 Yes there is. M390 And Titanium are very expensive compared to D2 and Aluminum. Yes the $50 cloness are great knives, they use good steel and have good fit and finish but its not as good as the $200 version in the slightest. That titanium charging handle alone is a very very expensive part, probably worth as much as of the materials in the $50 version.

Fuck that's nice.

I'm thinking about picking one of these up. How's yours holding up so far?

that ridge is a compound grind that is usually only found in marfione customs. This is their interpretation of that knife. It offers many of the features of a custom at a price point below that of a production model.

I can make recommendations. But there is absolutely zero guarantees it will make a difference. I think what you will find with the replica stuff is that they only use elements that they have seen in either the production or the custom versions of what they are replicating. In other words if you can find a picture of a halo VI with a clip that would go a long way In having it be a later addition.

I think the blade steel might possibly be m390 (still maybe not) but their heat treating process is most certainly not on the same level. Heat treating m390 is pretty difficult and if it's not done right you lose the hardness and edge retention that makes it an attractive steel to begin with. Still if I end up wanting a halo I'll probaby buy one of these as it probably won't be used all the time

I dont know why some still cling to this idea that because a knife is made in china it cant be heat treated properly. That mentality should have died 10 years ago when china first started buying up all the M390 and most USA companies shifted to CTS204P to get a comparable steel. Not to mention if you actually do more digging you will find that Vespa knives have been tested for not only the type of steel used but also the rockwell hardness and they are well within the acceptable range. And yes there is a range in which to heat treat this steel depending on the properties one wants to emphasize. These knives are not made in a cottage industry like italian switchblades. The same factories making high end collaborations and midtechs for several makers also make the vespa knives. I didnt move to chinese knives as a compromise. They make higher quality knives at lower prices with the exact materials. There are no magical heat treat gnomes. If you have the equipment (they do) and the know how (which they also have) China only made garbage knives because that is what the demand was. To fill a price and quality gap. Once USA prices went stupid high and features, materials and detail went down china has been killing it ever since. And that is coming from someone who currently carries several american made knives just because I like them. But the knives being made by some brands in china are simply the highest quality knives being made regardless of price. And those prices continue to rise. Give it another 10 years and china will have as much prestige for knives as japan and the USA. Hell they have been making swords and knives longer than both countries.

@@purpledc1 it's not just some idea that i have but my personal experience with Chinese manufacturing with knives as well as several other hobbies. They tend to cut corners in areas they think people won't notice (like heat treating). Other times it's finish quality, materials used, end product quality control, etc. It's not to say they can't produce a quality product (civivi, rike, Kizer, qsp are examples of this) but in general these chinese companies that sell from sites like aliexpress/dhgate/bangood have alot less accountability than ones based in the US or that use stateside retailers. In this case we're talking about a company selling a ripped off design which would be illegal in the US, from a country where, like you mention in the video, is illegal to use or even own their product and the whole operation is subsidized by their government with the purpose of undercutting USA manufacturing. If tests have been done to confirm they use real m390, with correct and consistent heat treatment then I stand corrected and good on them. But I find it hard to automatically trust thats the case just by some writing on the blade. I will also agree that these knives are a better deal than a microtech as it seems they have an enormous profit margin and they're no longer the only ones to make a quality otf

@@shaneridge9557 the tests are on youtube videos that prove everything I say. CIvivi, we, rike, reate and all the other brands you mentioned are knives made in china with zero USA representation. The knife is not illegal nor does it violate any IP. Tony didnt invent the OTF. And he has stolen more good designs than he ever created. I dont take anything at face value. I do my research. Dont forget the USA knifemakers utilizing the chinese factories to make their midtechs because they saw how flawless their manufacturing is. If you buy a cheap counterfeit that is what you will get. If you buy a vespa you are getting a top quality knife at price that cant be beat. You cant import switchblades for the purpose of interstate commerce. Owning one for a personal curio is not illegal. No more than an italian switchblade. Also if you dig a bit deeper you will find several companies selling OTF knives as "made in the usa" when in reality they simply are assembling rough milled chinese parts and finishing them. You have your reasons to doubt. But in this matter I promise I have damn near more experience than just about anyone. I reviewed the first high end chinese knives ever to be released. Bought a horizon from reate when all they sold was on DHGATE. Your experience isnt invalid. Just outdated.

That is a complicated question and the best way to answer that without speaking for people who I cant speak for is that in some cases yes other stores sell legitimate vespa products but you also have to remember that the people responsible for the brand may in fact own multiple stores as a precautionary measure in case one should get shut down which occasionally happens for one reason or another.

Well they are two completely different beasts. For me this design isn't really an edc type knife unless you just want the biggest damn thing you can get with super tight lock up. But the darkstar is more convenient.

They will likely make more. But even the black is amazing man. Well worth the money. Im not even a huge fan of single action OTF knives. But this one is easily the nicest of all I have owned. Lockup is deadlock tight. Much easier to achieve. But very impressive for a clone.

The springs are proprietary. You would want to find a retailer with actual halo springs. Dimensions are only part of the equation. You need properly tensioned springs. Unfortunately as this video is a few years old I no longer have a replacement to measure.

Yes. It has a kydex sheath that has a quick detach buckle that allows for multiple carry configurations.

I have the vespa halo 5. This does not seem to be better than that. Maybe in person though.

I would strongly disagree. The original vespa halo was a cheaper d2 equivalent steel. This blade being bohler M390. One of the best steels you could hope to find. The blade play was much less apparent and the materials are much better on this new version overall. This has a titanium charging handle with a mechanical latching system that wont dislodge. The button shows the machining capabilities and its intricacies. The lockup is more positive on this model. Virtually every single thing about the knife was improved.

PurplEDC Reviews this is 200$ i paid 150$ for my vespa halo V when it just came out. Considering the fact that i actually do not use this knife and its more of a gimmick i am more than happy with D2. Mine also has zero bladeplay. Maybe i lucked out on mine. Greetings.

Ok. So then don't buy it. But you are acting as if there are no upgrades. If you are happy with a lesser product as it performs fine for its given purpose for you that is all well and good. But that is specific to your needs and desires. You not wanting more simply means that applies to you. And if that is really your position then there simply isn't an upgrade they COULD put into the knife that you would find worth while seeing you don't actually use the knife.

I'm really disapointed about the Vespa knives . I bought two of their knives and i have issues with the 2 knives . I think the quality is not as good than before .

I bought two Vespa, a Cypher and a combat Troodon . The Cypher has a screw that doesn't hold, it goes into a freewheeling and in addition the knife has an opening problem, sometimes the blade gets stuck when it's out... For the Troodon, I have the same opening problem as the Cypher. I disassembled the Troodon to clean and oil it and I noticed that there is a trace of friction inside the knife . After reassembly the problem still exists for opening the blade. Sometimes the knife is normally opened 10 times and the 11th time the blade gets stuck. It's amazing, because I already bought the old Vespa Troodon and it works well. The seller is honest because he will change me the Cypher. I reported the problem with the Troodon to him and I have not yet had an answer.

I really am sorry for your issues. The screw I have no good answer for. I can only say its the first time I have heard of it. The opening issue I have heard of, and even experienced but every guy I have spoke with I asked them to completely tear down the knife and clean every part with windex. Blade, inside the handle everything. Then after reassembly I ask that they only put a drop of rem oil on the flats of the blade and cycle it. Everyone that has done that reports it works fine. Mine included. I would ask you try it one more time and then try giving another email to john chen. He may be slow to respond at times but he cares about the company and the product.

Theoretically yes. But I wouldnt technically pay $600 for a knife anymore because I dont have to. The vespa is made with just as good of materials if not better in some areas. You arent getting a perfect compound grind on the MT. The charging lever on the Vespa Is titanium, And the lock up is 100% solid with no play in any direction. And with them using the same bohler M390 that microtech uses and the fact china knows how to properly heat treat it yeah, I would take the vespa over the microtech. With one exception. If someone said ill trade you my microtech for your vespa id do it. So I could sell the microtech, buy another vespa and go buy some more knives. The only area I feel these knives differ is the anodizing. The microtech anodizing has a grippier feel. But microtech has had periods in time when they did anodizing like the vespas have. But I promise you the quality on this knife is on par with anything I have owned from MT and Ive had a shit ton.

well if you knew the full history of microtech knives you probably wouldn't feel the same way. Tony has "borrowed" plenty from others as well. And only in knives is this "don't copy me" mentality prevalent. Which is odd because the closest hobby to knives is guns where you literally have knock offs of knockoffs of knockoffs. I honestly think the concept of intellectual property has stifled much of the knife industry. And there is nothing illegal about what they did. Especially since USA law has only one jurisdiction and that is within the USA. This knife falls much under the same protection watches do in regards to homage's. Anyone wearing an invicta watch is 99.9% guaranteed wearing very close copy of something previously made by another company only with the invicta logo on it. You can find the same scenario in many different types of tangible goods. A knife to me is a tool. And if someone will make a better hammer that looks just like your hammer but with a different logo and cut you in half on the price I say you charge too much for your fucking hammer and I go where I can get the most for my money. And this is a damn fine knife for that money.

I'm not new to knife collecting, and I'm FULLY aware of all the drama that has revolved around Microtech throughout the years. I think my biases against the Chinese cultural disregard for the concept of "intellectual property" weighs heavier on my opinion than I should allow it.

However, my initial comment is still valid to me personally. I'm not saying that the Chinese knife isn't good. I'm saying I can't personally condone or endorse a blatant copy/clone/homage.

​@@garydales5233 And hey, that is certainly your choice and I would never try to convince you otherwise. I simply provide a different perspective for those who are more like me. The only time I get unruly is when people come at me with a real sense of self righteous indignation. Which of course you did not. Hence my more tempered response than I sometimes might give in this situation. The only people who bother me are those who only selectively care about such things. For me if a person is truly against copying and if that is really what its about they would advocate against such practices with all tangible goods they buy. But in most cases they only dip their toe into the argument when it is most convenient for them which usually means their hobbies. Signifying to me that they don't care that their metallica T shirt they are wearing is an unauthorized reproduction or that the bag their wife carries looks like a Louis Vuitton, but its usually never the case. Leading me to think its not that someone was copying someone. But that they copied somethin they personally care about which to me is simply a lazy form of white knighting for a company who has no more to do with you than you do with them. My philosophy is to simply let people build whatever they want and let their quality, heat treat and overall execution dictate who is worthy and who is not. Because IMHO if we keep going down this road of not copying each other one day good designs will dry up. In fact its kinda why I think things are getting so ugly these days. People are trying so hard to be different for differences sake they lose sight that there is a lot more to a knife than its overall shape. Hell most ABS master smiths earned their stripes by making near 1 to 1 replicas of Bob Loveless' work. And I cant help but really be petty and go back thousands of years and wonder how the world of cutlery would be today had we implemented the idea of IP theft in the dark ages and the first guy who forged a broadsword tells another blacksmith not to copy his design. For any one human being to sit and say they think out of the billions and billions of people that they truly had a unique idea? I seriously don't think its possible. If I have thought it or you someone else is just as likely to have thought of it before us. Either way, it was a good talk. And I respect your side. I just take a different approach to thinking about it.

Almost no manufactured goods are totally original. Almost all designs are build on the ideas of others efforts. Technology would not advance without the efforts of others over time. Basic OTF designs are not new or unique, Microtech improved the technology and manufacturing precision, as well as adding other design ideas. Microtech does have a USA patent, but no international patent marked on their Halo V6 yet. My problem is not with Vespa, but with clones that are marked with the Microtech logos and packaging and sold as genuine. Vespa only made a clone, and did not disguise or misrepresent their product as being a Microtech.

Bought 2 Microtech combat troodons and one Vespa copy. Both Microtech’s had multiple fails to fire and retract within the first month.Vespa combat Troodon copy. NONE.Nuff said.

Well im not sure what Syderco is. But if you are talking "spyderco". You would be incorrect. Almost nothing made by Spyderco come from Seki-city japan like it used to. The three main countries producing spyderco products are Taichung Taiwan, Golden Colorado and China for the tenacious and other models sold at Wal-mart. Spyderco is an American owned and operated company that only got its start making its knives in japan. The japanese corporation you are probably thinking of is Kai. Which owns ZT, Kershaw and a number of other brands like shun. So if there is anything to correct it was my incorrect use of the word "China" to describe the outsourcing they do in "taiwan". Either way the point remains and is true that its a global market right now and any company from any country can get any steel they want and that the old myth of "china cant get that" is horseshit.

@@aaronl8609 Here is the thing man. I make videos of knives. And I use them. But I am not the brand, responsible for their quality or warranty or lack thereof. I give my opinion based on my experience. And I have not shared your experience. And you are the first person i have heard say this. I have never seen the handle break. Now what I have seen is someone over oil the knife and get oil on the lock interface which due to the shock of stabbing something will get the lock to slip but this can happen with a $2000 deadlock if you oil it as the lock is friction based. Ive stabbed mine into shit countless times. But this video is 2 years old. And honestly this channel is probably closing.

I honestly doubt it's M390 or Titanium. Not because it's hard to get the steel. It's hard to heat treat and properly prepare it. It's already a chinese counterfeit, which are known to lie about the materials they are using to cut cost and make profit. What a waste of $200. Saying that it rivals the originals is a joke, something tells me they sponsor you or some shit. Because I can see just from the video that the fit and finish is far behind the originals.

The problem with armchair experts like you is you don't do one fucking ounce of research before you open your shithole and start regurgitating every fucking lie you have thought to of "learned" on blade forums or even worse USN forums. Do your fucking research. These knives have been tested by other youtubers numerous times with videos of their test read outs, and have been shown to use the materials they claim to use and have even been HRC tested to show what their heat treat is like. I have been collecting, modifying and repairing knives for 34 years. And anyone who even fucking hints that they can judge the quality of a product based on 720p or 1080P video on a computer screen is either an idiot, a liar or both. Now Im not going to blow smoke up anyones ass and say counterfeits don't lie about the steel. But this is no more a counterfeit than a Marfione matrix is of a ZT0777. Or a MT cobra is of a Mikov. And if you had even one goddamn brain cell rolling around your fucking skull besides the ones you use to breathe you would also know that 90% of the hi end knives coming out of china come from the same 3 factories in either parts or complete knives regardless of if they are originals, clones or knives being made for countless USA knife companies having "mid techs" produced overseas. Wake the fuck up, its not 2005 anymore. The knife market has shifted. And you can either choose to learn some things or cling to the archaic ideals that have been the reason the Chinese have not only equaled the quality of American knives but have exceeded it so much makers are actually using china to make products for them instead of whining like a cunt about it like their fanbase does. So, keep talking your shit, but the proof is on my side. All you have are your parroted words I have discredited countless times over several years.

@@purpledc1 I know this is an old post buúut.. the Chinese 3rd shift counterfeit knives are super fun to play with and can be fixed into great carry knives we owners will never really honestly know what the blade steel is. Fun for playing with but I've bought identical counterfeits that are marked Elmax/m390/S30.. All blade identical..

@@alexanderalexayev9406 again you are buying counterfeits. A counterfeit knife replicates the look of a knife down to the logo. THIS IS NOT A COUNTERFEIT KNIFE. Vespa doesnt make counterfeits. They will make a knife in a close likeness of another but the materials are what they say they are. The handles, blades and titanium parts have all been tested by americans namely luvthemknives. And how did you determine all the blades were identical anyways? Just by looking at them? Did you compare a $200 vespa to a $40 counterfeit? If you did and couldnt see the difference keep fucking practicing. If you compared nothing but $40 cheap ass counterfeits with fake microtech logos yeah you are going to get the same exact product regardless of the markings on the blade. Either way, I can guarantee you I have been doing this longer and most certainly know more about it than you. So if you want to argue it, bring up any point you think you have and Ill send you packing.

Wow fake rolexes and rolex clones made in China, now fake Microtechs and Microtech clones. Owning a few Microtechs, I now see why people who own Rolex (which I also hope to one day acquire) get annoyed with shit like this.

You know you may get annoyed by products like this. But I get annoyed with people who only do enough research to prove they didn't do enough in the first place. If you were in the least bit concerned with Intellectual property rights in the first place you wouldn't buy microtech knives. They have stolen designs themselves and have a long history of fuckery with their customers. And please don't come back with the whole 2 wrongs don't make a right horse shit. The fact Is I don't review fakes. I don't care for counterfeits. Many of these knives may be heavily inspired by an MT made product but you wont find any of their logos used. And the options are different enough that they cant be confused with the real thing. The real reason people are getting pissed is because microtech quality keeps slipping while vespa keeps getting better. But seriously, come back when you actually know microtechs history. Because if you did you would see just how ridiculous your issue with this really is. And you should also know that there is no law preventing anyone from buying and owning these products. Even if it was a counterfeit.
