Full Presentation | FLEX LA 2024: Julian White CLT (Game of Thrones, The Martian)

In his presentation to the audience in Los Angeles, Julian talked about how the craft of lighting has evolved over the years, as lights started to get more compact and less hot. Gone are the days where gaffers had to DIY their own linear lights with aluminum tubing and sheets of diffusion. With lighting tools that have magnetic and battery-operated capabilities, gaffers like Julian find themselves able to work more freely and make lighting tweaks up until the last second.
Born in 1966 to Italian/English parents Julian grew up until the age of 10 in Senegal, Sweden and India. His family returned to England where he completed his schooling. After studying painting at Liverpool Art School in the late 80’s he lived for three years in Southern Spain.
With several years experience in stage lighting and design as well as shooting for performance art groups he “joined” the film industry in the lighting department. Over the last 27 years he has been Chief Lighting Technician on 40+ feature films and countless commercials and features.

Awesome stuff! I recently picked up a pack of metal straps from Home Depot. Crazy how simple things can be if you don’t over complicated it.
