Yes, I believe you are right. Greater variation in service would benefit Ma Long a lot. Maybe he is stubborn old school, or maybe he thinks his other serve styles would be too easy for Zhou because they know each other so well. Serving from closer to the middle of the table instead of the corner all the time can also be a good variation tactic. Keep your opponent guessing, changing the ball angle when it comes across.

In short game and in 3rd ball attack he is still the best. And that is enough to beat all players except Wang Chuqin. I think Ma Long just doesn't need to train so much and defeat chinese players cause he already got everything that all players can get twice. I think the only reason Why Chinese team sent Ma Long to this tournament. Is to have some backup in case inexperienced players like Zhou Qihao or Xu Yingbing will be defeated by foreign players. And Ma Long would easily get gold by defeating these foreign players.
