    I've never felt an atmosphere like there was in Murrayfield that day - it was absolutely electric! We were standing in the old Red Terraces and could hear the force of the impacts as the Scots team put their bodies on the line defending their try line in the second half... Great thing was that, despite the tension of the atmosphere, when the final whistle went we all shook hands (ours was a mixed group of English and Scots supporters) and then went for a beer down the town!! ;-)

    There are quite a few scrums from rucks collapsing, but so what? There was so much more space for backs then because forwards were in those pileups if the ball got cleared to the scrum half. All you have to do check Guscott's try to see what I mean. The worst thing about this game was David Bishop, the NZ referee, who didn't play advantage well. He seemed to love blowing on the whistle.

    "He Scampered after it like a demented dingo" Ah Bill, how you are missed. Like eating your dinner off fine china with silver cutlery, Bills research, love of the game, and enjoyment of its idiosyncrasies brought such sophistication while never getting in the way of the drama on the pitch. Loving the scraggy scrums, no lift lineouts, penalty moves, full pack rucking. Normal body shapes, classy backs, ad hoc one man tackle defence, great ebb and flow. The regulators of the game today could learn a lot, maybe less regulation makes for a better game overall.

    Alas, with professionalism and players being paid to train all the time the amount of power in scrums and tackles is a lot higher now, dangerously so without safety measures. I agree with you though - the game was a lot more fun to watch when people were a bit less fit.

    I was only 4ish when this happened and never saw my first rugby match till 95 so as a Scotsman I feel required to watch this legendary game and Wow! What a game, it doesn't disappoint. It's amazing and kinda horrifying to watch rugby from this era but still this was a great game.

    I thought for years that Stanger's 'try' wasn't grounded but looking at it here I think it was touched down or, at least, you couldn't fairly say it wasn't. At the time the best you could get was a blurry freeze frame on a video recorder. Now it is clearer you can see it was a try. Good to clear that up after 30 years. Now, the 1966 World Cup Final ...

    So refreshing to watch a game like this as an antidote to today's dull stodge. Who knows, when the money runs out in the game it may revert back, over time. Good to see rugby involving fifteen men v fifteen men, instead of our thirty biggest pieces of meat against your thirty.

    I was only ten when this game was played last time we Scots won a grand slam. Since the six nations began in 2000 we went backwards and couldn't compete with the top sides hopefully we will get close would like to see more lads playing rugby in Scotland cos we are short of depth.

    It's not just lack of depth. It's also because the feeder schools and junior clubs are not what they were, and the rise of professionalism has compunded it.

    agr78 Oh I totally agree the game is a lot more clean and free flowing nowadays but I was just pointing out how players no longer obey those rules. Also scrums are boring af and take up half the game now. But I prefer watching rugby now.

    Why do Scottish Rugby have to import non Scottish players when they have great academies for young up and coming, dedicated Scots? Especially the untapped or encouraged in the Borders Region. Scotland don't need imports. We need Scottish bred and born.

    I remember the first big "import" of a player: Rodriguez of Argentina moving to Australia and then playing for them, back in the 80s. Having said that, there are non-British/Irish that live in the UK and Ireland, and have for centuries, and thus there's Marcus Smith, a Filipino/English player born in Manila. I remember a Scots lass played for Scotland in the 90s who had my last name. So, Iberians have lived in the UK/Ireland for centuries. Prince Obolensky was a Russian, not English! It's immigration after all, but I get your point.

    David Bishop of New Zealand didn't allow for that ebb and flow. Numerous times he failed to play advantage, especially at 1:31 of this video. You can see Scott Hastings was none too pleased!

  • @ldfreitas9437
    @ldfreitas94375 ай бұрын

    At 1:31 is the perfect example of a referee blowing up for a penalty when Scotland had the advantage off a perfect lineout feed to the backs, with Scott Hastings well over the gain line. You can see how pissed he is! So, the referee instead gives Ackford of England a ticking off, when he could have played advantage to see if Scotland could get further downfield. A referee can always "bring them back!" David Bishop, the referee from New Zealand, really screwed up more than just a few times in not playing advantage!

    These were the last of the amateur years, and about 15 years before the advent of polyester. These old shirts and shorts were cotton. Took little fossil fuel burning to manufacture them! Today? Lots of fossil fuel goes into players' kits.
