I've thought about that a number of times. The answer is no! Not even if Hell freezes over will you one day see a POTUS give an interview to any Russian MSM outlet. Putin, however, has done it time and time again in spite of the recurrent total lack of respect for the office of President of the Russian Federation. Bluntness is not the same thing as rudeness.

The most amazing part of this interview was the last words of him saying my main concern is my people’s revenue. He could have said something about his foreign policy, but wisely said his people is his first priority. He deeply understood how his big powerful country got apart in 90’s thanks to foreign policy of US government and all its western allies. So, he really wants his country and power back. Ukraine is just recent example of his battle against them. As an Iranian, I deeply understand since they made almost similar conspiracy and betray against our nation for centuries. To be powerful and independent is not something everyone can tolerate. It costs you a lot and needs political wisdom and national self confidence and loyalty to save your nation

Putin comes out of a meeting and just starts an off the cuff interview, spontaneous, for over 20 mins. No script, long thoughtful answers, with details. If he doesn't want to answer a question directly, he tells the interviewer clearly that he doesn't. Few if any western leaders (certainly not US presidents) can do this. He understands English, which is why he doesn't need the questions translated. He just may be uncertain about his ability to answer complicated questions in English, which is why he needs the translator.

It's easier for him to answer in Russian in order to deliver the RIGHT answer than to search for the right word in English to avoid double meaning. In this situation the interpreter is helpful.

Dude, that tells he is smart. He uses those poses in responses during a translation as a tactic to think his answers a bit better. He also understands and speaks English quite well but his interest is to show the Americans he is Russian. One can also think much better in his own language than in a foreign one. He is smart enough to get those things.

Putin speaks Russian, German, French, Swedish, English. He has corrected Swedish translators, spoken to Macron in French and made speeches. has given interviews and speeches to cnn in English. But I don't think knowing English makes him smart. Even if Putin doesn't know these languages, Putin is still the best historian, political scientist, and has a very strong literary foundation. If you watch enough interviews with Putin, how charming he is, showing the charm of ideas all the time
