[FULL] Hostile influence ops targetting Singapore "a clear and current danger": Vivian Balakrishnan

Singapore is "not pro-anyone or anti-anyone; we are only pro-Singapore", says Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan. He sits down with The Straits Times' Lynlee Foo to discuss global challenges such as US-China tensions and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and what they mean for Singapore.
This comes after Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in his English National Day Rally speech on Aug 21 that Singapore's external environment has become very troubled.
This is an edited version of the full interview.

@Kin-fat Chan There is no expectation from the Singapore government , but the media? The media could easily question the illogical and illegal sanctions imposed by the USA and place blame for hyperinflation on Putin. The government is neutered to be an ithesh. The media can be the sane voice for Singaporeans. Alas, Singaporeans are insulted by both.

“Our mainstream media remains a credible source of information, it is important we keep that reputation” Unfortunately some people are starting to say that Singapore's mainstream media are just echo chambers of western main stream media. It is not without basis. For example, most of ST's articles are reprints of Reuters, AF-P, NYT, Bloomberg and other US media. Many of its "expert" views are written by people who have linked to US interests, e.g. ASPI which receives funds from the US state department and military industrial complex. Videos on ST and CNA on foreign affairs generally has guests with links to the US government or its allies. Singapore's main stream media needs to address that before it loses its credibility.

Of course I also recognise that these views can’t possibly be coming 100% from them alone. The people behind the scenes that work tirelessly to feed our leaders with accurate information and wise advice must be so many of them and only our ministers know who these people are that make who they are today. My opinion is that invasion of a country is nice talking point. But superpower like USA simply ignore it with impunity, the rest of the world don't even care. Weak country will always have their own ally before they go for a fight. Talk is useless, this world is still a world base on jungle law. Economic is like jungle law to me, the best, the powerful win . To talk as if we have a principle that can protect us is useless. For a change, I believe that colonial power ,or those gene type, will always rely on jungle law. Maybe when they collapsed, a new cooperative environment is then possible. Cooperation and neighbourslyness is a more productive, human meaningful human existence. Attacking and invading your neighbour serve no purpose in a civilised world.

Excellent interview and kudos to the Minister for his very measured and thoughtful responses. However, two points that I wished he'd expand a bit more on are: a. Singapore's stand on the condemnation of the Russian action and the limited sanctions imposed. Yes, I totally agree with and completely accept the UN Charter on sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations big and small especially with regard to the behaviour of the larger more powerful nations with "might is right" capabilities. Whilst the Minister is technically correct to take a stand to condemn Russia's action, it'd have been more balanced and objective for him to add, in the same breath, that it could possibly have been avoided if Russia had not been so provoked by certain "might is right" powers , to do what they (Russia) had no other choice but have to do, as they considered it an existential threat. Singapore , may probably have reacted in a similar fashion too if push came to shove by its neighbours! b. Unless I've missed it, but I don't hear the Minister taking a similar stand objectively without taking sides, on the Taiwan issue . In this instance, universally accepted principles of "sovereignty and territorial integrity" have clearly been violated by a "might is right" party on the other side of the planet under fictitious pretence of being the self appointed global policeman to "protect" international shipping lanes when it is not even a signatory of the UNCLOS. To deny and to attempt to deliberately misterpret legally signed and universally accepted agreements under a self coined term of "strategic ambiguity" makes a farce and a joke of all treaties and agreements signed making them not worth the paper that they're written on. It certainly is in Singapore's interest to continue to take a neutral stand on these matters but I can't help feeling that its slightly biased towards the US/west which may be partly attributed to the fact that the whole cabinet and probably the majority of the people in authority in government are educated in the West.

The FM seems unfazed by NATO bombing Yugoslavia to create Kosovo, among many other new countries. The FM seems to ignore the genocide in Eastern Ukraine, overlooking it to justify sanctioning Russia. What a hollow sound Singapore FM is making for Singaporeans. If there is any integrity left, just call out the war criminals of the west rather than be party to their hegemony. In a Shangrila Dialogue, Sg Defence Minister was so pro US when ask by China the value of the dialogue? Infact he is a rude and disgracefull to tell the Chinese to decide for themselves on future attendance of the dialogue. The reason Chinese ask such a question tells you that dialogue in Sg appeared to be a platform for the US to smear China. Allowing US Warships to berth in Sg is another telltale sign of Sg having a US military base? And recently allowing Pelosi to use Sg as a platform to sneak into Taiwan, China is seen as colluding with them. Notwithstanding that we must stay united as Singaporeans, I have this unease about classifying the Russian invasion of Ukraine viz a viz Special operations (depending on which side of the fence you are on) as a "might is right" situation. Definitely, based on other very credible and reliable sources, not available in our MSM, Russia faced an existential threat they had to deal with. Hence they felt right to do what they have to do. Likewise, if one day, Singapore faces an existential threat or perceived to face an existential threat like that, wouldn't we have to do likewise. Considering the military might we have won't we be similarly accused? Maybe some wise men can educate me here.

I disagree. Ukraine can join the NATO or even have long range missiles on its land - because they are defending what is rightfully theirs. If Russia were annoyed, it could instil more missiles in their own country. Problem is when they think it’s justified to subjugate through invading the boundaries of what is Ukraine’s. They caused massive destruction ($500b) that no one is liable to rebuild. Even when USA invaded Afghanistan, precision drones were used to take out enemies and avoid damage as much as possible. Robert Greene who wrote the 48 laws of Power described it best that power is unequal and also because of an imbalance of ETHICS, there tend to be a disadvantage to one side. WW2 ended with atomic bombs dropped on Japan by USA because they were the only ones who could (horror all on its own, even if it worked). But with so many having the nuclear option, it’s incredibly hard to define an end game.

War on ukriane is not the only issue , it is not even the main issue, there is more to be solved. Putin had sent a written document to Biden I think around January listing 8 items to be resolved. It is like an ultimatum, mainly asking USA to move their weapon and threat away from eastern Europe to a line equal to the formal USSAR time. That is something the USA promised around 1990 but they had broken that promise had been hostile to Russia all these years. Therefor after Ukraine is removed, Russia will still be fixing the other problem that USA tried to ignore. Russia is a superpower that USA cannot ignore. it involves nuclear weapons which is so dangerous that it is not wise to discuss in small talk. nowadays a nuclear missile is 100 times bigger than that of the Hiroshima bomb and the technology is beyond simple graduate-level physic. Top of everyone's mind is not all that but about who feeds them and where their rice bowls come from, while still living in these troubling times. And you can't feed people or give people jobs just by ideologies, religion, social medias infowar etc. So, the alternative is to rob or steal from others by using all these political tools to justify wars, sanctions, invasion etc. Surely, now you can see who are the aggressors and who are victims in any wars or conflicts.

The solution is for ASEAN as a whole to improve so we can have a strong economy based on our own region and need not get caught inbetween US and China. Singapore is too financially tied to US and somewhat reliant on China for commodities. If war broke out between the two countries Singapore will suffer. At times like this, its opportunities for other regions to grow as US and China are bogged down trying to deal with each other. I hope this new realisation will be adhered to for the good of humanity. And I hope I won't have to keep on hoping that Singapore will have genuine courage to speak up against those nations which embarked on unjustified military actions, territorial conquest, illegal occupation and crimes against humanity. On the list of countries which were guilty of transgressions which our government refused to speak up against are the US, Israel, China, India, Myanmar among others. Only then we can be assured that our government does not resort to hypocrisy where it's convenient for them. And it only goes to show that their call for unity among our people isn't sincere when they do not care about the sensitivities of the minorities among our population.
