@John Dunbar Eh, I think Matty's riding sits in a good place these days. He goes high, aims for control and smoothness, and does lots of 'traditional' tricks with just enough style to make them look good. He has a good traditional approach. He's not full tilt mach 10 sending it, and he's not nibbling around skidding and landing circus tricks flat bottom. And, anyone that runs a gyro has gotta be a half good mechanic, right!?

@John Dunbar I do wonder if Matty had a different surname would he even be in this comp. I mean he is a good rider but how on earth did he place higher than that Josh Dove kid. But maybe that is just part of what BMX is, part tricks and part popularity contest.

@John Dunbar He is not qualified in the contest because of Scotty, Matty has been legit grafting riding at contests since he was a kid and climbing his way very slowly up rankings. Through Scotty's channel he has some fame (as does big boy etc) which helps them get sponsors which they otherwise would not have. The channel and Scotty have enabled him to get to contests, ride with the best guys and get coaching his whole life from Scotty. But Scotty or Fame does not get you entry to a Vans pro contest, and a placing of 6. He beat Kevin Peraza, Alex Hiam and Rim Nakamura in this contest. Something he himself was shocked by as those guys are some of the most impressive in BMX. Its because Matty has been improving an rode consistently. There is no cheating going on here. With a 6th place at a contest with so many of the best riders, Matty is finally getting to the point where he will no longer get announced as Scotty's brother. If you watch the Tall Order vids, you'd see that Matty is catching up to Kieran and Bogaard now, when he used to be perhaps the second weakest rider on Tall order.

@John Dunbar Matty is sponsored by Tall order due to youtube fame just like big boy is sponsored by shadow. But a pro BMX contest cannot change its scoring based on how famous a rider is. Invite only contests like X games can choose to invite riders who they think will financially benefit them, like if KSI and Logan Paul wanted to ride at X games they may well get an invite. But they cannot be favoured in scoring. Every other rider and viewers would very tightly call out that it is rigged. Mattys participation at Vans bowl contests is through qualifying city by city. So there is an opportunity for him to get dropped at every contest. But I believe there are also opportunities at each contest for new riders to get in if they can set a certain qualifying score. You can't just jump in and stay in the contest location after location because of youtube fame or because your brother is Scotty. Riders like Peraza are as famous/popular as Scotty was , and they would be rightly furious and boycott the whole thing if Vans were artificially boosting the score if a competitor just because he is the brother of a rider that was good in the past. It makes no sense.

@John Dunbar Kevin Peraza, Alex Haim & Rim Nakamura are Vans stars of today, Scotty Cranmer is a Vans star of the past. Why would they artificially boost the brother of a former Vans star rider at the expense of current riders like Peraza who they have invested into a signature shoe? If peraza is a guy who gets beat at contests by terrible riders, why would anyone buy the shoes? Matty did terrible at the last contest before this one. Things just happened to go his way here, I think largely influenced by the pool being too small for the powerhouses to get the crazy air and transfers they usually do. On the big ones Matty looks visibly inferior by his lack of speed and height, that didn't happen here.

Waaay back when Mark McGlynn started doing them on vert, he called them lookdowns. They weren’t called turndowns for a couple of years.
