Full Episode: Rockford, Illinois | Main Streets

Rockford is the largest city in Illinois outside of the Chicago area. It was originally known as “Midway Village” because, for travelers, it was halfway between Chicago and Galena.
This city was known for industrial manufacturing in the last century but today it’s been retooled into a center for healthcare and aerospace technology.

It’s also where you will find five-time Emmy award-winning actor and host John McGivern. Enjoyed by a nationwide audience, John’s unique brand of storytelling is expanding across the Midwest.
Growing up in the Midwest in an Irish Catholic family, John’s own experiences and memories are relatable and remind us all of our shared Midwest heritage. Through lively interviews with local residents and civic leaders, John uncovers the uniqueness and charm of each community he visits.

    Rockford has a history of making poor decisions that have shaped the city to what it is today. Saying no to NIU was the first. Worst mistake was wanting I-90 on the far east side where the city eventually grew to while leaving the downtown and especially westside to die and barely have basic amenities like grocery stores while the Eastside has an abundance.

  • @Woolife100

    @Woolife100

    Right they took all the good stuff from the West side and made the East side look like hey we're doing better than you 👈🏿 but not knowing you only hurting your city and the people in it . They did that to our so called black Americans folks to keep them on their money making because black folks were buying up land and polices were planting drugs on them and knowing that the police didn't care because they had badges on for and was known majority white cops will pull you over and put guns and drugs on your personal and say you made the decision to live over here so get with the program. Believe me, I was one of those victims of police brutality in Rockford Illinois 😉

    I've said this very thing for some time now. It's a tale of two cities for real. Since 1980 east rockford Illinois has become its own city. Nearly everything east of mulford was built post 1980. Leaving west of the river to feel like Gary Indiana or east st Louis

  • @302Mustang13

    @302Mustang13

    Ай бұрын

    @@philliprobinson-muhammad2034 it wasn't long ago that Mulford and Perryville Roads were just two lane roads surrounded by farmland. I think it was the 70's. I strongly believe Rockford would look much different if I-90 was routed through downtown or the west side. Some people think that is disruptive to communities but it was either that or the communities would be abandoned because the growth shifted far east.

    "The home of health care"?!?!?!? Try getting an appointment at a specialist here, any specialty. My husband suffers from Lupus. It took us 7 months to get in to see a rheumatologist. The "three month" follow up visit had to be scheduled ANOTHER 7 months out. Same is true for cardiology and ophthalmology, we know from personal experience. Why you ask? Because specialists with the potential to earn big bucks will not move to Rockford due to crime, poor schools and stagnant property values. There are SEVERE and systemic problems here and I honestly cannot think how Rockford is going to climb out of this hole. When my husband becomes eligible to receive his pension we're gone.

    This is very factual. To get specialized treatment you are either sent to uw madison or one of the hospitals in Chicago. My younger bro had to have work done on the leads to his pacemaker and they sent him to mercy health in Janesville because they said that's where the Dr that does it practices ( mercy built a half billion dollar facility on the interstate and almost all the cancer treating equipment is still in the old rockford memorial on rockton) they allowed that dude to basically cut off health care services to nearly half the city.

    Those are the Dark variety. Made dark on purpose because it adds a slightly different flavor. Mrs. Fisher's are the best chips! They were even better before they had to change their choice of oil due to new laws. I live in California now and have my son who still lives there ship me a few bags a year. You can also buy them online from their website if you want to try them.
