Full Episode: Dubuque, Iowa | Main Streets
Dubuque is in Iowa, where Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois would meet if the Mississippi didn’t divide them. This was and is, first and foremost, a river town. The mighty Mississippi is worked, revered and enjoyed here by locals and visitors alike.
The region was designated as the Iowa Territory in 1838 and was included in the newly created State of Iowa in 1846. Dubuque serves as the main commercial, industrial, educational, and cultural center for the tri-state area and has a population of roughly 60 thousand.

Main Street is alive and well. It’s where the heart of the community beats the loudest.
It’s also where you will find five-time Emmy award-winning actor and host John McGivern. Enjoyed by a nationwide audience, John’s unique brand of storytelling is expanding across the Midwest.
Growing up in the Midwest in an Irish Catholic family, John’s own experiences and memories are relatable and remind us all of our shared Midwest heritage. Through lively interviews with local residents and civic leaders, John uncovers the uniqueness and charm of each community he visits.

Grew up here. My father was an original employee at John Deere Dubuque Tractor Works. Used to get Turkey Dressing sandwiches at Jack Savary's on Dodge. He gave the recipe to my mother and to this day, 1 Turkey is dedicated towards this Dubuque Iowa delicacy. Have yet to find someone who doesn't like them. Was taught right and wrong in this Town.
Love this! As an Iowa resident, Dubuque has a special place in my heart. We visit two or three times a year. The history of Dubuque and the surrounding area is incredible. Thanks for the video!!!!
Can’t wait for the 2023 season. Thank you Main Streets !
*Very good coverage on our town I live there. Very respectable people live here. I'm dubuquies best dancer*
Born and raised here! Enjoyed this video so much!
You missed a key part of Dubuque Millworks: FARLEY AND LOETSCHER MANUFACTURING COMPANY. Once the largest mill working plants in the world. Farley and Loetscher began humbly on January 1, 1875 The company in 1930 was an employer of between eight hundred and nine hundred people. (20) The seven company buildings covered five city blocks. Each of the buildings, except for three warehouses, were connected by bridges that crossed over the streets. Employment peaked at 1,250.

Great show!! Love the murals too!
Fun to watched! Thanks!
We're from Chicago, and my wife and I absolutely love Dubuque, Iowa. Its been a few years since we last visited, and we are looking forward to returning this Summer in our first vacation since before the pandemic. This was a great video - we'll be trying out Cremer's!
Thank you, I loved it.
Congratulations on the new series. Love it. Looking forward to the rest.
Great video on a great town!
Love the energy! We are heading back to Dubuque in April to visit and looking to move back next year. I really miss it!
Really enjoy your Videos. Dubuque is my Hometown and we now live in Fort Collins, Colorado. Also Loved the video on Rockford, Illinois. Rockford was my Fathers hometown but back when we were growing up it wasn’t a good place to visit. Keep up the great videos and really enjoy the host !! Thank you.
Amazing episode! Can't wait to try the Chocolate coated caramels!

my dad was born and raised at dubuque,he said the oldest part of town is at the north end, there is signs that it is,a vintage yellow brick building
Dubuquer here. I like your background music.
Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois…..lol I thought I knew that! Minnesota was in there on the tri-state question ….a fun 🤩 video John!
I have been thinking about making a channel like this, before I discovered you! And here I thought I was being unique. I am in Iowa, but about 150 miles south of Dubuque. I think mine would be more on history, and wouldn't be as many interviews. But nonetheless, great job!

10 years ago I told a coworker from central Iowa that I thought Dubuque was nice. He laughed at me and said there is a bar on every block and said the city was run down. Well, I hope it has improved since then. It’s a place with tremendous potential anyway.

He's not wrong about the bars and it's definitely not a negative because you're always just a few steps away from getting a Captain n' Coke and a styrofoam box of cheese curds. I'd advise that you'd stay away from Paul's Tavern, though, the place has these creepy taxidermied animals and the bartenders look like they came back from the dead. Definitely not like those trendy hipster joints that have been popping up lately.

They've used a lot of lipstick for that pig of a city. My wife and I used to live in a nice area until the house across from us got shot up.

@@Firguy what an ignorant comment. Pauls is absolutely loved by residents. Great prices and the burgers are famous. If you'd rather pay $14 for a pint of hipster IPA thats all you
I saw you in that part about John Deere Dana. Your not on there long but I've seen you!!!!!
It's interesting cuz I live there for a while but I think I've only been on the lift once
There’s a Trappist monastery near Dubuque where some monks make coffins.

Illinois,Iowa and Wisconsin
P.S. My dad had ma my a run in with Al Capone and his gang. He use to collect bottles and paddle them to the river island where they made moonshine. My dad said Mr. Capone always had his henchmen give the kids a little something for their loyalty.
read in the news decades ago,a person or persons rolled bowling balls down universirty street hill, lol
Dub-yook is how it's pronounced; all this time I was pronouncing it "Doob-u-Kyu"😂
Unfortunately 8 of the 9 stingrays died recently with an equipment failure. Previously, they could be petted.
I had the privilege to help clear the hillside on the 3rd Street elevator twice I don't know if you can consider that a privilege though LOL

"4th street" elevator or Fenlon place elevator. They use goats on the go now...the goats are like commercial lawn mowers that can traverse the hill side.

A fellow Quaker asking what’s over?
In the 70s and 80s, Dubuque was closer to 75% and maybe as high as 85% Catholic. Outside of the city in the county, it was around 90 - 95% Catholic. It is the only seat of a US Archdiocese that is not located in a major metropolitan area. I have a feeling that a lot of that difference now are people raised Catholic who just no longer identify.
Dubuque is on the Mississippi but what the story doesn't say is that there is not 1 in of beach or any area where you can go into the river from shore. Now, if you get a boat and pay ridiculous licencing fees you can go to an island were they maintain the sand. I am a river rat but they did their best to limit us.

Not true. Finleys landing is open beach to the public and you can drive just a few minutes north of town.

The construction of the floodwall eliminated the beaches that once existed. It was completed in 1973 and the Mississippi hasn't come close to breaching it since. Losing some beaches us a small price to pay to keep your city from flooding every two or three years.

To be fair, the Mississippi River have a strong current, to where if you're not careful, you could get yourself really injured.
Dubuque is so boring I plan on leaving in a couple of years when I get a little bit more situated
