I wish dogs could live forever too. They are really wonderful creatures. What a lot of love and companionship they share with us. I know this comment is coming a year later...but I still wanted to comment. I just love all your videos. You cover a lot of ground and I learn a lot from you. And I have to say, your skill level with making arrangements is AMAZING. Your bouquets are EXCEPTIONAL. Inspiring.

I'm new to the channel and I am loving your tour and blog style videos. Thats how I tend to learn i flower farm in a northern praire state in the US with lots of wind- i wish i had your mild climate though, its a bit wild here in the winter. I love your calm demeanor, some other channels are great but quiet loud and overly energetic 😂 I have lots of videos to catch up on this autumn/winter!!

So sorry you lost a dear friend 😢 our dogs are the best people. They always love us unconditionally. We lost our little Cairn last year....always in our hearts.

Maybe you can try to grow the Scabiosa caucasica, which is beautiful, with blue or white flowers. Or the high Knautia macedonica 'Melton Pastels', a mix of pink, cherry red, mauve and purple flowers on high stems, they are both perennials. The perennial Lysimachia atropurpurea ‘Beaujolais’ and the white Lysimachia clethroides ‘Lady Jane’ can also be nice to try out in the perennial section. (I got my seeds from Seedaholic, very good presentation of their seeds.) I think that it will be easier for you to have more perennials and less of annual seeds to sow in the spring. You can sow the perennials in autumn, out on the farm, and only the annuals in spring.

I am so very sorry for your family's loss. Dogs and flowers just seem to go hand in hand with all of the growers. Thank you for all that you share and for being YOU!

Great video. When do you cut the flamingo celosia. Do you cut a stalk with lots of plumes or one plume at a time in which case they are short? Would love to see some bouquets using these. 🤩

Hi Sarah. Sorry to hear about the loss of your dog. My dog Sam died earlier this summer and is also buried in my flower field. My favourite perennial this year is Echinops Ritro Blue. Customers have loved it too!

I am growing valerian next year for the treatment of sciatica. I listened to an hour program on the subject of Brix yesterday. When you mentioned it today I was thrilled. You, and other farmers on KZread are giving me hope as you push agriculture in the right direction. I have recently started using bokashi and am delighted to find the soil I added it to is Full of worms. Full.😀

Have you ever heard the phrase for perennials, first year sleeping, second year creeping ,third year leaping? I’m sure you know that it takes perennials a few years to get established and growing to their full potential? Your perennials are quite possibly not a lost cause. 🌺💚🙃

Hi Judy, I hadn’t heard of that term but it makes sense! It’s not necessarily the performance aspect it’s just the fact that they aren’t the desirable varieties that I want to use in my arrangements.

Hi Sarah! I hope to send my condolences for the loss of little Reggie! He seemed like a cute, loving dog. 😔 Your garden is filling out very nicely. We’ve been having constant heat waves in zone 8B of Texas. I’d recommend echinacea, perennial phlox, and paniculata hydrangeas. They do well in the heat for me. The phlox blooms large panicle type blooms every year starting in June and will send out second flushes when they are trimmed. Thanks for showing us your beautiful farm. Hope you have a wonderful day!

Hi USA here. Sorry about your pupster! Regards. Also see your comment about slug pressure. Beer traps really work. I use tuna cans or plastic containers that i save all year. Cut top of cans off and bury them 1/2 way in garden. Plastic, cut holes in top big enough so they can crawl in and put them in ground with about 1/4” not buried. Fill with beer. Check and remove dead ones daily. Really works and is cheap and safe around pets. Cheers.

Hi Sarah, loved seeing your fields in bloom and it was lovely to hear your going to plant a tree where you have buried Reggie what a lovely place for him to rest in peace and watch over you in the field. I am growing Asters for the first time this year, can I just ask when is the best time to cut them.

Hi Sarah! My favorite perennial is Rudbeckia “little Henry”. It produces a ton of quill style blooms at end of summer that are perfect for bouquets. I do have to corral it though because otherwise the stems tend to topple (it’s quite tall). Never has pest or disease issues either!

My surprise favourite right now is a certain rudbeckia in the “Sahara” mix from Johnny’s. It’s a tan colour with a chocolate velvet-like center, many layers of petals, super long lasting, and although they said not to expect very long stems the ones I’m getting are just fine for the kind of bouquets and arrangements that I’m doing. I absolutely love your Eucalyptus area.

@@bloomandgray Its crazy, Rusty was a stocky, male, terrier crossed with what we thought a Jack Russell but some say a dashaund lol he was gifted 1.5 years old, to me by my neighbour a farmer / show jumper. He ended up loving the sandy beaches / mountain walks, many a time I had to take him off the fisherman's boats on the Quay lol chawing on a starfish and rolling on welks, he was stinking 😆 never trained, no lead required & he had a great understanding of English language lol the locals in Ireland called him the Highlander off the Scottish TV series, as he lived so long xxx

Actually I did love the geums, they're very special in those bouquets when you do have them.

As always, super inspirational. The drought here has been horrendous - 1mm of rain in Suffolk for July! Sorry about your loss but sounds like the tree is going to be wonderful!

So sorry to hear about your little dog. I’m sure he had a wonderful life. I so enjoy your videos Sarah. I’m in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland, so not so very far away from you, but our weather has been chilly and wet for most of this summer, just two hot days in July. That cosmos is definitely on my list for next year. My favourite flower which is new to me this year is Chinese forget-me-not ‘Blue Firmament’. It’s a really lovely true blue.

Hi Sarah! I also have slug pressure and they are very much a pain in the butt, I have found sprinkling cinnamon on the ground area especially while the dahlias are emerging to help quite a bit. Plus it doesn't hurt anything else, give it a try for your crops that slugs are a problem

Sarah, Puppy Love is a sweet and powerful thing and I am sorry you and Rob lost your beloved family member. I listened to the No Till pod cast on brix yesterday and would be interested to see how you foliar feed your plants. Your artichoke flowers are stellar. I plan on using mine in dried arrangements. Favorite flowers in my garden are Senior’s Hope dahlia paired with bunny tail and hopi amaranthus. I appreciate how you share your flower farming world with us.

That sounds like such a nice combination! I love the colours of dahlias such as seniors hope. I will make a video in a few weeks about foliar feeding, at the moment I’m kind of just making it up, but the course I’m going on this week might prove me wrong or tell me how I can do it better. Have you tried Astilbe? I have just discovered through watch Flower Hill Farm's videos. The flowers are so feather like it is glorious and I think they would go perfectly with your bouquets. I ordered pink, red and white for my home flower garden in Australia.

Great video, thanks. Love the amaranthus!! Do you stake any of your plants? My cornflowers always flop over just before they flower, making the stems too bendy to use in arrangements.

Sarah, please could you do a video on the business side of things? Over the years what are your successes, failures, profit, costs, marketing, what have you learned, tips etc. I know you have done a video on how you started but I would be interested to hear an update :)

The tree for your wee doggy is a lovely idea. Is your piggy a type that isn't very much into digging? We had a couple of pigs recently who helped dig over a few of our gardens...but they just never stopped digging, and made such a mess of the paddocks and yard, every time they broke free of their pen. We had to get rid of them, but I wouldn't mind getting more pigs if they could roam without turning over every square inch of soil. Beware slugs in your Foxgloves, if they don't flower this season for you. I didn't know they were biennial in my first year of growing, and the combination of giant year-old plants, and tight spacing designed for autumn-sown, made for the perfect slug habitat. They took up residence under the decaying leaves at the base, and multiplied like you wouldn't believe. Otherwise, they're supposed to have a beneficial effect on the growth and health of all nearby plants - except those of the onion family. It might be an idea to plant your new lot of Foxgloves alongside varieties that struggle a little in your climate. Now I only grow the first-year flowering Foxgloves (Foxy, Camelot, and Dalmatian) - and first-year flowering Sweet William (Sweet and Amazon) so I don't have to worry about the timing so much :) I've started seed for Cosmos Apricotta for this season - can't wait. I find Xsenia and Apricot Lemonade, go with just about everything, too.

I am in the U.S. so I don't know if you have them there in the U.K. but I love all Cone Flowers (Echinacea) as Perennials for cutting. They send up lots of stems and if the petals fade or get chewed you can pull them off and still use the cone part of the flower in your arrangements. I loved the tour, the cute pig snout, and the donkey song! Thank you for sharing your farm and flowers and even the sad loss of your furry friend. Many Blessings to your family!

How about Allium sphaerocephalon or perennial sunflowers? Helianthus ‘Lemon Queen’ flowers over a long period. Not sure how it would cut, but it makes tall, self-supporting stems. Terribly sorry to hear about Reggie. It’s never easy when they go, but I’m sure he had a lovely life with you. Must be like winning the lottery for a dog, living on a farm!

You have such an awesome selection of flowers! I am doubling the size of my flower farm next year. My husband & I just finished prepping the area. It floods every time we get rain, so we had to add a ton of compost & soil to it to level it out! I can't wait 👏 Since there isn't much time left in the season & I'm too busy to lay fabric, etc., I'm going to plant melon's & pumpkins in it (which I already have the transplants ready), & when they're done I think I'm going to try cover crops for the first time.

Love Potomac Lavender snaps and I just picked up the Cosmos Apricotta thanks to your reel! My favourite celosia is Celway Terracotta. It has such a good branching habit when pinched and you get loads of stems from it. Thanks for the tour and 🤗🤍 on the passing of Reggie.

Sorry to hear about your Pup...he was a cutie!! Have you thought about getting some ducks to take care of your slug problem? And the perrenials that I recommend (that you may already have) are Baptisia for the foliage...its amazing! Feverfew....its a great dainty filler flower! Lilies...you may already have them and are bloomed out! Lavatara...gives off a ton of blooms and comes in a few colors! Liatris because its very hardy and it multiplies! Perrenial Phlox...so much nicer than the annual!!

I would love ducks (and chickens) but we have a fox around who would probably have them in an instant. I also don’t need any extra responsibilities at the moment 😂 yes to those perennials! I have some perennial phlox hidden away in a corner and I seriously need to put them into a more prominent position and take some cuttings!

Heart wrenching loss - always hard to see goodbye 🐶 Yes, the Apricot Cosmos is beautiful. Must add that to my list. It didn’t do too well in the vase, probably didn’t condition it properly, but Guara the Bride, is my favourite this year. Will definitely be adding more.

I’ve always like gaura, I tried growing it in my first year and it didn’t do well so I haven’t tried since. Must re-visit lots of things like this that I only tried once!

Cosmos flowers just don’t have a super long vase life…you’ll get 5-6 days at the most. You can give it the best shot you possibly can by harvesting when the buds are just cracking or for double varieties wait till the halfway open stage.

Try the feta morgana scabious is an amazing clotted cream colour I've used it loads this year

So sorry about Reggie. Never easy to lose a pet. 🤗 re perennials to try. I love oregano when it blooms and my other favourite is Russian sage. Not sure if either of theses would be suitable for cut flowers. The salmon cosmos and snapdragons are gorgeous. I really enjoy your videos. From Canada.

I love oregano, I have it in the polytunnel but I could do to try and grow some outdoors too. I will google the Russian sage!

Oh and I was going to suggest coneflower...they are an amazing drought tolerant, hardy plant that comes in many different colours! And Delphiniums are an amazing perrenial too and bloom in early season! Hope this helps!

Yes cone flowers is definitely on the list! I haven’t actually grown delphiniums before but for some reason I think i would struggle on my clay soil. I suppose I’ll never know until I try!

I love watching your videos! Have you thought of growing the hot biscuits, coral fountain or green amaranth? I’m growing two red varieties and they are more fall colors than summer or spring colors.

I do have hot biscuits, I do like using it, I’ve been experimenting with a pink/ rusty colour palette lately and I’m really liking it! I don’t like the coral fountain or green one as much because I find the droopy spikes less useable. It’s great for wedding instalments though.

Yes I do grow eryngium, I only have 3/4 plants, the brides who want colourful flowers tend to really like them too!

Hi, I realised I didn’t talk about this in the video but it was already getting long! In my opinion the Chelsea chop hasn’t been worth it but it could be also a factor of the small amount of rainfall we’ve had, not sure. It definitely didn’t work for the alchemilla mollis, we are yet to see with the sedum.

My perrenial to recomend is Sorbaria sorbitalia. I love it when it is in bud stage and blooming. The fern like foliage is amazing. Super long vase life and length. Not invasive here in Canada but it suckers. I had a long shrub of it here when I bought and it is indespensible along with my asparagus patch. It goes by Ash leaf false Spirea and the flower is white foliage looks great with the limes and apricots . It offers both focal flower and filler to my bouquets depending on the time of year.

Alstroemerias are my favourite ‘doers’. Summer varieties just keep flowering if dead headed. Guess if you planted in your tunnel u would extend their season. Avoid compact varieties, mine never seem to do well.

The slugs are INSANE here in Northern New England in the US. I've never seen anything like it. Especially since we have been in a drought for months!! The damage has been obscene.

I have the “blue”/purple liatris seeds to plant next year. I know another flower farmer that grows it, and she loves using it, but I haven’t tested vase life myself. Worth the price of a single seed packet for a small area of the flower farm. If you hate it after trying it, you can always dig it out and put it on the compost pile/give the plant to a friend/sell the plant.

Im curious, how much can you make in a season with the amount of space you have? I am working in developing around a half acre. Im in the states so im sure it would be a lot different, but im still curious 😉 and im so sorry about ur fur baby 💜💙

Shannon, have you looked at Lisa Mason Ziegler's podcast or KZread channel from The Gardener's Workshop? kzread.info If you're looking for the business side of flower farming and selling that's her specialty. Her classes are fantastic, but tons of great free content too. I remember her saying that even at peak production in her 20+ years of flower farming she was only growing on two 1/4 acre sections of her farm and was able to produce 10,000+ stems per week and sell to multiple florists and I think over a dozen grocery stores. So as a beginner trying to start on 1/2 an acre is a lot! she recommends if you're just getting started to grow on an 1/8 or even a 1/16 of an acre because otherwise you get overrun with weeds and staying on top of things while trying to learn all the business stuff and trying to find customers. Growing on even a 1/16 (50' x 50' section) when done well and managed correctly can produce an unbelievable amount of stems. She says over and over that growing is the easy part, and the business/selling is where people throw in the towel and quit. Profit depends on if you go the wholesale route, sell at farmers markets, or go for the full retail value and do weddings or other events. I know I'm butting into a question that wasn't meant for me, but wanted to let you know of another resource as a beginner that will hopefully save you time and money as you get established. Lisa also wrote the book Cool Flowers which is all about hardy annuals, great for early and late season blooms. Good Luck!

Honestly, I loved watching every minute of this. Some people do weekly garden tour videos during the growing season that are consistently over an hour and the subscribers are there to watch and not bothered at all by the time. It’s good content that subscribers want, I think. People like me absolutely geek out over flowers! I figure if I can’t fly to England for a real life garden tour (several times a year,) this is the next best thing. Actually, I take that back. This way is the best way for a homebody like me, not “next best. Am I having to spend time away from my home/ family/ pets/garden? No. Do I have to do any of the work of planning/filming/ editing? Nope. Is it a financial burden to watch KZread videos? Not at all! Can I hit the pause button and come back when I have more time? Yes. Yes, I can. It may be a small investment of my time, but…Worth it! It’s my pleasure to watch these videos and it’s what I’m intentionally choosing to do, no matter the time length they are. I’m in. “You’re doing a good job! Keep going, keep going, keep going.”💞
