Side note! In the UK, a single crochet is called a double crochet, and a double is called a triple. Make sure you know where your crochet patterns are from, to avoid confusion.

It looks to me like the hook she is using is a 10mm, which would be the hook that the yarn package would call for, for making blankets or other items. And yes, as you stated, a 7mm would be a better choice for amigurumi with blanket yarn. Another important skill you need to know to be able to make amigurumis. You can sometime get away with this with making wearables depending on the pattern because some is no-sew but basically YOU HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO SEW. This is very crucial and you'll need about basic-average skill in this to be able to really make amazing projects.

You can use a slip knot instead of a magic ring. Don't tighten the slip knot all the way, leave a bigger opening. You can work into the ring you have from keeping the slip knot loose, make as many stitches as you need, just like with magic ring and then pull the yarn tail to tighten up the stitches.

I crochet a lot, particularly stuffed animals and i used to know how to make the magic ring. But I don't anymore. So to those who can't you can also do two chains, go back into the first chain and put as many stitches as you need into the first. It's simple but be careful. It can cause a hole at the top of your project though

This is maybe gonna sound dumb stupid, but with plushies, do you slip stitch and chain 1 every new row or just keep going? Mine always looks different no matter what j do

I personally do not and just keep going if I’m working in a circle, which most amigurumi is done in :) hope this helps!

Ok so yes magic ring is important, but you can chain 2 and work your stitches into the 2nd chain from your hook and it's the same thing. I have problems with making a magic ring and I swear by this method. I got it in a video by All From Jade.

Magic ring isnt a must, just chain, join the ends, and do the sticthes you would in the magic ring, through the hole in the middle.
